Angrydicky Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 Got to be honest, I'm a big BL fan but there's no point taking them too seriously, and a lot of people do. Some of the comments on the facebook thread were laughable, and quite embarrassing. Talking about blockading the entrance so people in "posh" cars can't get in? A simple apology from them, saying they'd spoken to the beard in question would have been quite enough. trigger, Banger Kenny and purplebargeken 3
dollywobbler Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 It is true that they didn't seem to like your trolling. Your point remains entirely invalid though. You seem to have a very limited vision when it comes to classics. Fortunately, others (including Brooklands itself it must be said bar this one-off) don't. Anyone who gets upset about something they don't like being at a car show needs to grow up. The Princess owner was right to be upset. The response by some BLers WAS over the top. If he go turned away from an event marketed as Best Classic Sports Cars or something, I could understand your view. But he didn't. Cavcraft, AlabamaShrimp, oman5 and 1 other 4
HillmanImp Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 To be honest, the old duffer on the gate at Cholmondeley Castle is a miserable old get who often complains about cars coming he doesn't like. Was this the time you turned up in a V reg Peugeot 306 estate? Alexg and cms206 2

plasticvandan Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 I used to have a similar issue with some of the older Reliant owners at the rallies i used to religeously attend,i used to say that what you have to remember is what you are driving is what 99% of the public thinks is a piece of shit that shouldnt be on the road,if you can remember that then you will be fine, otherwise you will become a nervous wreck

Mirkin Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 Sod snobbery, elitism and grumpy giffers in gaudy green gillets gaurding gates. All should be questioned on a regular basis to keep them in check and I'm sure that if the Princess driver had been a tad more assertive he would've gotten in.It was a Classic Breakfast event, the Wedge is a Classic and Brooklands themselves have said they would have welcomed it.
Cavcraft Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 Was this the time you turned up in a V reg Peugeot 306 estate? Haha, no, I think it was a BX estate. Anyway, it sort of got me thinking as to what would be the newest/boring car I could arrive in just to piss him off a bit more. I did actually mention it to Andrew Greenwood who just laughed and said 'just ignore him, you know what us Yorkshire folk are like!' It's funny how 'selective' some people are though, one man's meat is another man's poison. It's no use trying to complain or troll about certain cars when someone's owned something no better, then spat their dummy out because there was pretty much zero interest and they couldn't sell it. Partridge Posted October 28, 2014 Author Posted October 28, 2014 Pete M raises some really good points actually, and I don't think it's right to call it trolling. But I think the replies from some of the AROmongs was a touch OTT. I will probably get blasted for suggesting that some of them should get out more, but it's true in many cases. alf892 1
Louise2cv Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 Child abuse arguments are the new "Godwin's law" for me. About as popular* as pug 604s I reckon. I make no apology for suffering a sense of humour failure when it comes to belittling and trivialising child abuse or genocide. mat_the_cat, dollywobbler, Cavcraft and 1 other 4
dollywobbler Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 Pete M raises some really good points actually, and I don't think it's right to call it trolling. Right. So you think it isn't trolling to turn up on the AROnline page and shout that the Princess isn't a classic? Louise also raises a valid point. I'd stopped reading by that point. Quite unnecessary. oman5, Banger Kenny and Cavcraft 3

Partridge Posted October 28, 2014 Author Posted October 28, 2014 We're all entitled to our opinion and it's interesting to note both sides of the argument. The AROnline community can be a bit blinkered at times, and sometimes forgets that their cars are not the best thing since sliced bread, and that not everyone "gets" them. Rather like the rare occasion somebody parachutes in from real life into this forum, and suggests that maybe it's a bit daft to spend £1,000 on a car that's worth £200. But there isn't really any need to compare it to child abuse is there?

dollywobbler Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 Yes, we are all entitled to an opinion, and free speech is a great freedom we enjoy. It doesn't mean that you HAVE to speak your mind though. It's entirely legal to walk into a church in the middle of a service and tell everyone that you think this religion stuff is all a load of crap - a view I hold myself - but it's not very nice to do that, so I don't. mat_the_cat, Inspector Morose, Partridge and 2 others 5

Pete-M Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 It is true that they didn't seem to like your trolling. Your point remains entirely invalid though. If he go turned away from an event marketed as Best Classic Sports Cars or something, I could understand your view. But he didn't.Thing is, Ian, I mistakenly thought he'd rocked up at Goodwood trying to get into one of the breakfast meets. Turns out it was Brooklands. If people like old cars then that is fine by me. No complaints whatsoever. Even if they're Vauxhalls. Want to meet up with other old car enthusiasts and swap tales of breakdowns and polishing tips, yeah. That's all good. I'm up for that. Calling dismal things "Classic" when they were shockingly bad and about as far from best in class when they were new doesn't fit any proper definition of the word classic but there's an industry built around keeping the owners of old cars convinced they own something special when in truth they just own something old. Where the cars that were top of the crop when new now fit in is a mystery. A P6B isn't thoroughbred or exotica but it is a hell of a lot closer to being a classic than a Princess or Allegro. With the shifting of the 'classic' tag to include anything over about 20 years old regardless of quality or merit it has devalued the meaning of classic. I don't get pissed off or upset about seeing old tat at shows. I like seeing some of the shite people love dearly. I would however be pissed off if I went to Carfest and the Ferraris and Lamborghinis had all been replaced with Fiats and Moskvichs. There won't be anywhere left to see the top shelf classics if every show ends up full of 'classic' 1994 Corsa diesels. Old Car Weekly doesn't have the same ring though does it? Anyway. I'm going to go and wash my face in my classic* sink, walk to the classic* shop to buy a paper then pound the classic* pavement back to my classic* house, open the classic* gate and make myself breakfast. *Over 20 years old. Therefore Classic. Partridge, beko1987 and alf892 3

Agreed, mate. Surely you'd know exactly what you're going to get with something called ARonline and even if you didn't it wouldn't take long to twig?If you don't know what it's about, why join? To be honest, AROnline (EDIT: AROnline Facebook group) is so self-winding it doesn't take much to start them off. Dugong dared to mention that an MG6 he had borrowed broke down, and he became an enemy of the state for not thinking the MG6 was perfect in every way. Although hats off to one of the admin, who's a mate of mine who was reasonable. It's a shame because the website is very different. It's a great mine of information and one I've contributed too quite a lot. It also kick started my career. Mirkin and Banger Kenny 2
trigger Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 I think people are getting far too over sensitive over something that doesn't really concern them, I personally don't think it even deserves a thread on here anymore than it does of Facebook, it screams very "Mr Angry of Finchley" to me. If you break it all down all that happened is one old car wasn't let into a show as some old duffer on the gate didn't think it was old enough, yes it annoying for the chap concerned but it's not really the end of the world. How many times have you not been allowed into a night club when you was younger as you were wearing trainers or the wrong kind of shirt? A few times I bet but I also bet you didn't start threads all over the Internet about it either, you'd just shrug it off and go to another bar/club instead. RobT, dugong, drum and 2 others 5
