oman5 Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 Here we go. After relentlessly taking the piss out of these for 30 years I've finally plucked up the courage to buy onehttp://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Austin-Allegro-1-3L-estate-MOT-July-2015-Tax-Jan-2015-/261610879032?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2047675.l2557&nma=true&si=spEqhEGD3BejYDWwN%252FUhx1kQyLs%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc We were on holiday in Cornwall when the auction ended, and it would have been a shame to come back without it considering the seller lived close by. It's pretty crispy around the edges, but it drives well and not beyond redemption. I admit to being stunned as to just how refined it is on the motorwayhttp://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Austin-Allegro-1-3L-estate-MOT-July-2015-Tax-Jan-2015-/261610879032?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2047675.l2557&nma=true&si=spEqhEGD3BejYDWwN%252FUhx1kQyLs%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc RedSparrow, DS20, Semi-C and 24 others 27
trigger Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 Nicely played! I have a strange desire to own a Allegro for a bit too. oman5 and madwelshman 2
Craig the Princess Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 Allegro estates are full of win, and with their ample load capacity that is a lot of win. inconsistant, KruJoe and oman5 3
Junkman Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 Nicely played! I have a strange desire to own a Allegro or two. FTFY oman5 1
Sloth in a bowl Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 That sir, is a mighty fine piece of tin. If it wasn't for the fact that I want to stay married, I way well have dipped in my pockets for one of these by now. oman5 and AlabamaShrimp 2
garethj Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 Fantastic, that's the perfect holiday souvenir! tooSavvy, eddyramrod, vulgalour and 1 other 4

Actually, I might have to buy one sooner or later to save my marriage. The Junkwoman is rather fond of them. Squire_Dawson, eddyramrod, oman5 and 3 others 6
oman5 Posted October 10, 2014 Author Posted October 10, 2014 Getting it back to wales from Cornwall was a decent shakedown run, for a 1.3 it's not too bad in the power stakes and got close to 40 mpg. It has a later metro engine, not that this should make much difference, and still has it's old style logbook, unipart mw/lw radio and a leycare letter from 1982. I like it! 406V6 Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 Back in the day I owned an Allegro Mark 2 with the 1.3 A series and replaced it with a Metro containing the 1.3 A+. The difference between the two was so great they might as well have been totally different engines. The A+ had far better breathing at anything over 2500 rpm and was a lot smoother and quieter. oman5 1
eddyramrod Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 Good choice! If I ever have an Allegro (which so far I have cunningly* avoided) I would want it to be a 1.3 estate. oman5 1
skattrd Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 I think Allegro estates look a billionty times better than the standard one, top bombing sir. KruJoe and oman5 2
Fat_Pirate Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 Those 4 headlamps are an intimidating sight. I believe the Allegro 3 was the 1980 equivalent of a white Audi A4 TDI, owning the nation's motorways and raining down terror on Escort 1100 drivers. jonathan_dyane, Squire_Dawson, Lankytim and 8 others 11
vulgalour Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 Jealous. The 1.3 Allegro estate is everything I want in a car. oman5 1
STUNO Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 I had a 1300 4 dr many years ago, and actually liked the experience ! Always thought the estate was a better looker than saloon, but the colour had to be right.Good luck with that, at least you know it drives well. oman5 1
blguy1975 Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 Hi.And welcome.I think you did well with that estate.I have a 1975 2 door with a q u a r t I c steering wheel.great fun .why not join the Allegro club ideal for s h o w s and parts .I know of a allegro estate. In Stockport which I have been trying to buy for 3 years. All good funD oman5 1
dollywobbler Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 An Aggro 3 1300 estate is also on my wish list. Best of the whole lot I reckon. oman5 1
mouseflakes Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 Yep - the Allegwagon is the one I'd go for. I said 'oo' myself when I saw yours on ebay (before it was yours). oman5 1
Alexg Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 Congratulations, and welcome to the exclusive Leyland Shooting Brake owners society. Firstly feel free to help yourself to a complementary glass of Costcutter Iron Brew and settle comfortably on one of our 3 plastic garden chairs. I'll be back in a minute to tell you about how much shit I lugged down the tip last week. Pillock, dugong, Essex V6 and 8 others 11

oman5 Posted October 12, 2014 Author Posted October 12, 2014 MOAR pics of the shooting brake. Sorry about the lack of foto skillz. I've been going through it to see what needs doing. The ride is very bouncy which probably means the nitrogen has leeched out of the displacers. The speedo doesn't work. All 4 arches are bubbly and to be honest it could do with 2'new front wings. Sadly at 370 quid each that's not gonna happen any time soon.Petrol tank has a minor leak.2nd gear synchro is missing without trace and it jumps out of gear. The inner wing of the ns needs the rot cutting out and a repair section made.But....the engine is one of the sweetest A series I have driven, no timing chain rattle, no smoke and pulls well. AND!!! When pulling away, it does that first gear MEEEEEEAAARR whine that the metros did. I'm much more comfortable driving this than the P6, I think the plan is to just stop the rot getting any worse and make it reasonably presentable. I think I'm also going to resist the temptation to put a BMW centre grill on the front, no matter how tempting it is. Bucketeer, EssDeeWon, Alexg and 7 others 10
eddyramrod Posted October 12, 2014 Posted October 12, 2014 Australian spec, I hadn't realised! How rare, well found sir! oman5, dugong and inconsistant 3

forddeliveryboy Posted October 12, 2014 Posted October 12, 2014 I bet it goes way better than this one, ignoring the flat springs - what a practical car. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AUSTIN-ALLEGRO-1-3-ESTATE/171474236006?_trksid=p2047675.c100013.m1986&_trkparms=aid%3D555012%26algo%3DPW.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D25402%26meid%3Da73e829cfac84a4bb0040dd9cf230f45%26pid%3D100013%26prg%3D10670%26rk%3D5%26rkt%3D30%26sd%3D261610879032 oman5 1
alf892 Posted October 12, 2014 Posted October 12, 2014 Wow...an Allegro is a proper machine I think the estate is the Grand Tourer of the range.....a very handsome beast oman5 1
Richard Posted October 12, 2014 Posted October 12, 2014 Incredibly capacious too, and with a full-size boot under the floor so you don't have to leave your boot crap in sight or move it when you want to carry a grandfather clock or something. oman5 and Craig the Princess 2

robinmasters Posted October 12, 2014 Posted October 12, 2014 Lovely. Is that polyfilla or toothpaste all over the near side wing? oman5 1
