P reg Seat Ibiza - save from the scrapper!

I'm off to see a P reg Ibiza 1.4 with sub 30k from new this evening. MOT is just about to run out, as yet I have no idea what it needs to get through another, by the sounds it needs a window reg in one door and a damn good clean though!

He's wanting £150, I'd ideally be saving it from the crusher, getting it through a fresh MOT and then selling it locally, as much to give my new transporter trailer something to do as anything else really.

Alternatively, anyone need a low mileage 1.4 Polo engine? Hard to know which way it's worth more.

Anyone have experience of this generation of Ibiza? What goes wrong with them?

Mechanically pure VW so nothing much to go wrong (from that era anyway). Trim not as hardy as VW cousins, but otherwise pretty bombproof little cars. I don't think they rust too badly either.

For 150 quid, WCPGW??

Yeah AEX engines are fairly tough IIRC but very underpowered, 60bhp and about 80lb/ft on a good day. I had one in a Mk3 golf and it struggled with the weight of the body.

A Polo/Ibiza from that era will be tough, but don't expect to be going anywhere fast!

Engines are reliable, gearboxes less so. Build quality not different from Polos, they were both made in the Martorell factory in Catalonia. £150 is about right for one with no T&T.

Depends on whether it has ever seen a gear oil top-up... I've been told the VAG service schedule considers them 'sealed for life', so people don't bother checking the level. Minor leaks eventually lead to them running low on oil, which their bearings don't tolerate particularly well. Cue whining, eventually followed by loss of 5th gear.

Cheers for that!

Got there and the mileage is actually 52k, that slight rust staining to a rear arch is full on rot, and he's now saying he wants £250 for it.

So he can keep it!

You can't save them all... What pisses me off is that people like that prefer taking £100 from the scrapman than £150 from someone who will try to keep the car on the road :-(
