Right, this has bubbled up to the top of my shit list. My shitehawk insurance company won't put my classic policy on hold and are therefore about to cancel my policy and pocket the rest of the 90 quid premium. What better reason to buy a car right?

I know I've already got a cortina but this has a 2.9 Granada v6 in it, 5 speed box, Capri LSD and vented discs. basically all you could want from a hot Cortina.

Downsides are it's possibly a little salty? This is hard to quantify given the prices of Fords these days. Also it has a bit of an old oil rig welded onto the back, which I'd need to bin straight away.

Oh aye, well spotted that are is prime real-estate for Cortina rust too.

I decided not to bother with the Cortina given I already have one. It's gotten to the point I've actually paid the cash back into the bank and cancelled my insurance (wankers charged me 4 quid and I only took it out 2 months ago). The plan is to get the green one on the road but of course my eye has started to wander to more modern stuff, which of course will be disasterous.

Alfa 156 GTA Wagon. These things are P@RN. Black wheels are wank obviously but other than that.

Cracking interiors (other than that hole)

I borrowed Breadvan's 156 Wagon (24v V6 flavour) for a while in the summer and it was an ace drive.  Would.

I had a 166 3.0 super Lusso and it was bazerk. This has less weight and more horses so I imagine it's pretty mental.

I've got a hot tip on an Opel monza gse with manual box and LSD . It's supposed to be tidy as it's been laid up for years until recently .

I'm going to see it on Saturday .

If it does'nt need welding you should buy a lottery ticket as well.

They guys got a ramp so should be able to get a good look. It's not cheap so I'm hoping it's decent .

So I went to see this Monza today. I didn't get any pictures but it's this colour. The wheels aren't the anthracite ones but white BBS style (very cool).

The car is very original but it's not really been on the road for 10 years. There's grot in the rear sills, the bottom of the rear valance is held on by sealer but it comes with repair sections. There's also rust around the strut top mounts. He says he'll sell it with a years mot though.

The engine sounds sweet and the interior is very tidy. It does need a new exhaust it might get an MOT but will probably need replaced with an stainless job.

He says he wants 3 grand for it but a little birdy tells me he'll take 2.5. I think this is strongish money for one of thes?  Att 2.5 I'd hope it'd be in better shape but then again it's a mega rare and very cool car. I'm also a bit worried that after sitting for so long there'll be dried up seals that will start leaking when I start using it again.

Buy my 406 Coupe and save a grand!  You can put them on classic policies as well.

Sorry this could get repetitive

Seems a bit salty to me. I would only consider it if you really want a manual, and it would have to be a low mileage, low owner car with very good history. And I'd want to see it on a ramp as they rot like a bastard.

As someone who has bought cars that have been off the road for a long time I can tell you they can be a right ballache.

The last one I bought needed....

Fuel Injection system rebuild.

Fuel lines.

Fuel tank cleaned and resealed.

Rear brake rebuild + front calipers

Timing belt + water pump, shocks, wheel bearings etc etc.....

Ask SambaS about a Monza!  He has a whole thread about the welding on his.  I think you'd really have to want it to take on something with rot in it, and it would need to be a LOT cheaper.

This is my worry. I was hoping for that money it'd be good go and I'd much rather it be in regular use than sitting for so long. He already mentioned he had to rebuild the fuel pump as the petrol had turned to jelly in the tank.

Eddie I've seen Sambas thread and that's what makes me nervous!

I know where there's a very tidy Royale coupe for sale......in gold, with gold velour interior............sound in all the places where they're usually shot. £900 would buy it.

I was looking at that gse earlier. I recon it could be hiding grot the arches look like they're starting to go. Also i recon it's missing some body kit. the other one I went to see had side skirts.

Colc that royale sounds tempting but I want the manual box.

I'm still looking. That manta with the red top in it on rr looks mega fit and in budget but I've not had time to go and see it. It's only in Carlisle too.

I'd be wary of sticking an old car back on the road when it's been sat idle for so long. There are bound to be problems, on top of the rot you mention. If it was cheap then maybe.

I always look for something which has been used as much as possible - lightly-used chod never goes as well and can start causing grief when thrown into real use.

Haha, Duisburg-registered.

Do you want to buy a Duisburg-registered Twingo Mk 1 to go with it??

:-)

Edit: that's not your one, I R IDIOT. But you can still buy the Twingo...

If it's got rust around front strut tops I would be very wary as this is what kills them.

It sounds like he will bodge it up quickly to get it through an MoT, which may make matters worse. A lot of filler and paint attached to some rust on the front strut tops will be even harder to repair.

Unless you really, really want a Monza I would pass on it.

How about a Rover SD1? £3k should get you a nice V8.

Carlton GSi? Cracking cars which dont rot quite as badly as monza's and royale's.

May I be the first, but possibly not the last, to suggest that what you REALLY want is a brown Merc 230CE.

Posted

I've had a few old mercs and they've not really floated my boat.

I'd gave another Carlton gsi, quite hard to find decent ones now though .

If the monza had been half the money I'd have been interested.

I got offered a v8 Morris minor traveller earlier today. A bit left field .

I'd have v8 sd1 too but not a lot around just now.
