10351801_10203474015143274_6845966395380Pictured is my wifes grandmother and great grandparents round about 1937 to 1939 with a "new" car - its unlikely to be brand new as the reg is APK 293 - Guildford plates and this picture is taken at their house in Preston.

Im utterly hopeless with pre war cars, so can anyone tell me what it is?

Thanking you in advance...

All new cars look the same to me.

all old cars look the same to me.

I'm alright on fifties to eighties though.

I'm sure Brickwall got it in post number two.

1935 Hillman 16 ? (like a bigger Minx) I would  love to say that the body was by Thrupp and Maberly because of the way it rolls off the tongue, but I think that they only did the posh versions :)

From the curve of the radiator grille I'd say that's a Hillman Minx, c.1934, like this one:

I concur with Skizzer.  Here's a '34 Minx I once owned.

For some reason the bonnet on "mine" is slightly different though.

Gawd knows. Unless it's a blower Bentley or an Austin 7 all pre war stuff looks the same to me.

I conceed. I just saw the 4 doors and typed away. Oddly enough, there isn't much between these cars.

Anyway, 4 doors means posh.

Many thanks, I'll tell her its a Hillman and she will think I know shit loads :)

Doubt it will earn me a BJ though, but its nice to know what it was. Interesting that a Guildford car made up North. I never really thought about cars moving that far around the country in the pre-war era for a sale.

Awesome period picture. They must have been quite the social climbers with that.

He was the deputy governor of HMP Preston for a few years, I have some photos of when he was in uniform and he looks a mean fooker. Looks more mellow above.

Mind you, the further back in the family tree you go the rougher they look...
