The Goodwood Revival MASSIVE photo thread

LOL @ The Del Monte man! He did didn't he! It's a shame about your Zenith camera but hardly surprising I guess. Chuck your photos up here, I've still got to go through the rest of mine.

When I know which ones work want to use, I'll lob some up.

Here's a notable one.

I was fortunate enough to be on paddock marshall duty-getting paid to be there. Long days but it was epic. I'll stick some pics up later.

LOTS of cool looking stuff in the classic parking on Friday by the looks of it. It's just a very classy event all round; the vintage bit, the stuff put on show, the classic cars, the laid-back atmosphere and the racing just makes for a complete overload and there's way more going on than you could ever take in.

I was there Saturday and Sunday and managed to coax SWMBO_69 down in the Anglia on the Sunday.

Loving the Marathon bar, Dugong. Did they still have the Double Diamond? I've got a bottle of it left over from last year!

Posted

(So trying not to sound like a twat) looks like there was some very nice stuff there but it all seems a bit old man, stuck up and clichéd to me.

What I mean it's all very 50's and 60's which I feel is hyped up as an amazing* time. If it was 70's/80's then I might think differently

Posted

To be fair to Goodwood, it's based around the era when the circuit was operating as a 'proper' racetrack for then-contemporary racing, i.e. 1940s(?) to 60s.  I haven't been for about 10 years but the atmosphere then wasn't 'stuck up'.  Yes there are some rich people there, but most aren't and it's much more about the cars than the money (or at least it used to be), except maybe in the big-name auction house bits.  Not all the cars are priceless and highly polished and even the most exotic metal gets a proper thrashing on the track.

I don't know whether something equivalent for the era of 1970s touring cars exists at, say, Brands or Donington?  Probably.  Could be fun.

Posted

That's my ignorance as I didn't know it was a racetrack so wouldn't associate the two things together.

I think it will just be something I don't get* really. Saw bits on the telly with people over acting in fancy dress, not for me :-)

I was there last year, when the 'theme' was drag racing, something that was actually never done at Goodwood.

We got an invitation, dusted off the old Funny Car, and went.

I found it old man, stuck up, clichéd, and most of all cliquish, and we bare knuckles Hot Rodders were

quite frowned upon.

We changed that dramatically, when we fired the thing up on 87% nitro. Was quite funny to see all those

fancy dressed geezers jump and duck for cover.

Then we took it out on the track and did a burnout that made everything else there look and sound slow.

What was really nice though, was to meet all the guys again we competed against back in the 80s.

Why is there always so much alcohol involved, when you run into people you haven't seen for 30 years?

I have to say, when viewed from a sizable Pimm's cloud, it was actually quite agreeable.

I'd do it again. But not if I have to pay for it.

Surely most of those who can afford to run competitive racing classics are mostly wealthy? And us proles go along to watch. As it has ever been?

Anyway I've been the last two years and loved it. Went last year on a freebie and enjoyed it so much I actually paid to go this year. I don't think it is expensive considering what is laid on........we go to quite a few of 'retro' type events and this compares ok. It pretty much delivers what it promises too.

And the dressing up makes it.

I suppose it will be old man because of the era it is aimed at........so if it feels old man they have hit the spot.

Old man will soon be 70s/80s?

I can really see the appeal, and I'll bet there was plenty of elegant bodywork to perv over. I mean the kind with tits.

To be honest I think I'd feel rather more at home at the Festival Of Speed. There was just so much to gawp at my head was changing direction so frequently I gave myself whiplash. Plus you get the whole big-budget motor manufacturer presence and new model launches; if you like that kind of thing.

Pricey, though. I couldn't have justified it without getting in as Press, and even then I guarantee I was the only person there who stayed in an 825 overnight.

There was a lot of money at the show, I watched one bloke in lairy yellow trousers by some second hand suitcase for £1200 without even battering an eye lid, Then there was plenty of normal folk just there for the whole atmosphere and the fancy dress, it's a real chilled out event where everyone is game for a laugh.

It wasn't cheap though, 3 days worth of tickets, grandstand tickets for the Friday, the B&B for 3 nights and fuel & food plus the outfit hire must have set us back nearly £1000 for the pair of us, frighting really but I still feel that it was worth it.

Brilliant pictures, Trig, thanks for sharing !

I was actually considering attending next years' Revival until I read this... It may be a fairly unique event, but for £1K I would expect to be given a complimentary car with my ticket !

Posted

To be fair if could be done cheaper, I think Mrs Trig paid £450 for Fri-Sun tickets with days grandstand which was an extra £60 for the two of us but you could do it in two days and one of those could be spent just outside the track for free, then the B&B was another £210 for 3 nights.

Things like eating out for 3 nights and fuel bumped the price up for us.

Posted

I just went for the day - dunno whether you can still do this (it was 2002 or 3).   I think just getting hold of tickets is a bit of an achievement these days.

Was that the Revival or the FoS?

Posted

I was gonna say, I'd have been stomping around in a huff if there were nitro cars doing burnouts on the track and I'd missed it :D

I'm not so keen on the FoS. It is a completely different type of event and exactly how you described it. Revival is really laid back and everyone there is there for fun and racing; totally different atmosphere.

Posted

Brilliant pictures Trigger, looks like there was almost too much to see, think I would have been knackered after a couple of hours!

It's took me two days to recover! It didn't help that on the 1st day I wore a pair of shoes that i hired and subsequently left my feet with massive blisters...

So, on with day 2, the Saturday and more photos then.

I'll start with the car park again, These two made me smile, I saw them at the show on Saturday, I saw them again whilst in a Chinese in Littlehampton on Sunday night driving passed and then i saw them again on the A14 in Colchester presumably heading towards Harwich on Monday evening. It's nice to see cars getting used.

I loved this ratty Roller, It's been literally dragged out of a barn, had the bare minimum for a MOT and then used daily, it was full of gaping holes and had a coat hanger aerial. Class.

There is some stupendous machinery that gets down there, and captured very well here too.   Time was pant-stains like that Land Rovah would never have got in there but there we go....I have unfortunately stopped attending and without getting too po-faced priggery about it there are just too many hangers-on and champagne lickers on their corporate jollies.  I think that Tesco did it in for me, a bit of fun I know but they aren't content with cocking up our suburbs, they want to invade the past as well!    The best time I have ever been was when it absolutely shat with rain for the whole day - the racing carried on and there was hardly anybody about.   I think I agree with Martin Buckley when he said what the Revival needs is a coach-load of 1950s teddy boys tanked up on brown ale.  It could be arranged, y'know....
