Cheers......unless someone decides to nick it this will be back on the road next year, saying that I bet some pikies might fancy weighing it in :-) I'd be truly heartbroken :-(

Good luck with the rebuild, I think you'll be safe on the pikey front. Not much to weigh in after all that cutting. ! Look forward to the updates.

That's great work RMX, fingers crossed the chassis legs can be welded in situ. If not, as Samba said they are simple enough constructions and a bit of fabrication should sort it out

Very impressive stuff, you must be virtually the only person in the world doing this level of work to something so rare and relatively worthless (worthless that is to other people rather than us normal people here)

Ha ha, I'd rather be us normal than them normal any day

Every car has its charm, even this one 😄

Thinking about it, the Renault 15 and 17 used a similar/identical chassis structure to the Renault 12.

In turn I think the 18 and Fuego had a lot of carry over parts from the 12.....

Not that 15's, 17's, 18's and Fuegos are two a penny but there might be some similarities with chassis leg design and Renault dealers might carry chassis legs for the later models. Long shot I know but might be worth 5 minutes research.

Renault Owners Club might have a "go to guy" for R12 parts who for all we know has two NOS chassis legs on a heated plinth under armed guard just waiting for someone to buy them off him for a fiver for the pair?

If need be, and this is absolutely last scenario, i will get new chassis legs shipped over however I am hopeful what's left can be mended.

I sent off for the log book on Monday, since Sam didn't have the old one I had to fill out a V62 (hopefully I got it right) because without a log book all this work is for nothing.

I recently broke a petrol renault 18 and as such have a shitload of parts lying around.

Great stuff!

I really hope its well out of the way of prying eyes. The average pikey hiab driver wouldn't think twice about removing that for you!

I'm away from any main roads, in the woods somewhere..........wont say much more as I don't want to be woken up by one of you lot wanting to look at it in the middle of the night, not just yet

Ladies & Gents, little bit of guidance or opinion again please (yes I had said this before and something is telling me this wont be the last time) so before I go and ask around I thought I'd ask you lot:

As I am currently carving the body to pieces, and am working from the top, cutting the floor out I am wanting to treat some of the areas which are easily accessible at this moment in time. There are some areas which I want to go over with a wire brush and prime/rust proof. The WHOLE underneath of the car will be treated with some kind of underseal at the end but for the odd patch that I want to rust proof at this moment in time, is hammerite any good? Is it ok to go on bare metal? if not, what would you suggest?

I keep meaning to try this out:

As good as it gets for rust protection according to the likes of Practical Classics. They took all the paint off a Sierra and tested various products over severl months of being exposed to elements, including plain old engine oil.

Hammerite is just terrible in my opinion . Get some good zinc rich red oxide. Teamac is good stuff . White and green can .

If you are working with bare metal then Galvafroid is great stuff - lovely zinc based primer. Haven't bought any for donkeys so no idea how pricey it is these days

all, since I know most of you would like to see as many pictures as possible, all pictures detailing progress are on facebook, just look for: Dacia Shifter Restoration and add it.

I will of course continue to post here too :-)

Not used them personally (yet), but Martrim are supposed to be good.  They'll sell you the vinyl or do the job for you.

Seconded for Martrim. They did an absolutely first class job of re-trimming the cushions in the van. We were going to replace the foam as well, and prepared to buy it from them but on their suggestion we kept the existing stuff. Any business who does themselves out of a sale if not really needed gets a thumbs up in my book!

Can't believe I've missed this since the initial post! Will be watching with interest. All I'll add about the mention of Galvafroid is that Zinga on paper at least seems a better bet.

I've used them both for around 5 years and as yet nothing to choose between them for rust resistance. But I've gone for Zinga ever since.

Angle grinder was out again today... :-)

So most of the old metal is now out, I'm looking around for replacement ideas. Doesn't have to be 100% matching but something along the lines.

I was thinking a new floor panel for a long wheel base transit or some kind of van, anyone got any contacts I could speak to about getting one?

I've seen bulkheads on eBay for around 50 quid but that's not long enough to use on the floor.

There is a place just outside of Worksop that specifically breaks commercials, I think it's Bamford Breakers:

Bamford Breakers

Weighbridge Yard, Shilo WayNG16 2BF

Tel: 0115 822 1534

They often have Citroen and Ford vans in and I reckon something like a Citroen Berlingo could give you the floor section you're after.  I'm pretty sure they deliver stuff at your cost too, if you explain to them what you want... that is if I've got the right yard.  Here's a picture of a Berlingo van floor.

Although no further physical work has been carried out since the last pics uploaded, I have received the HOLLY GRAIL of logbooks today.......DACIA log book with my name on it, :-)

The only log book I don't have yet, is for the Dacia! Well and the Charade but I'm expecting that.

If you're applying via v62 form (hope I got that right) pay close attention to the chassis number when you write it in, they'll send back your application form if any of the letters/numbers are wrong......worth look looking over before you send it off as the each application costs £25 :-(

I enjoyed going over to have a look at this. It really is the dog's bollox. Top work.

Posted

And if they're is anyone else in the area that wants to pop by and have a look just let me know. I'm down in Esher.

I am hoping to have the floor section finished this week, depending on the weather.

I've ordered myself one of these since my garage isn't big enough, and full of crap
