Took off both the switches and cleaned them. Indicators now work but the washer button is still emptying the bottle whenever it is pushed.

I think I am going to replace it. Is there any difference between mk3 stalks and later ones?

New/old switches fitted and still no washer.

Checked voltage at pump and that is fine. Removed the pump and stuck it straight on the battery and that is cool. Cleaned and sprayed the switches till they sparkle. No joy.

I am just going to run a new switch as it is booked into MOT on Friday. I need it to pass so I can press it into service for house move.

Decided to bite the bullet and get wet fixing it.

It is just a temp repair to get through mot. Once we have moved will solder and heatshrink everything properly.

Simple job to test which lead was + /- then cut off the plugs straight into chocolate blocks.

Ran a wire through engine bay into drivers side and fitted a pull switch. Apply gaffer tape and almost factory install*

The new wiper switch is a slightly different shape to the old ones so fitted with longer bolts and the cowling has been put on as best it could be.

Took the bus for a quick run up and down the track and everything seems funky, fingers crossed for first time pass tomorrow.

Best of luck with the test Mr Moog,  I'm also Shite fixing in the rain today so I know how you feel.

Stupid question time - what do you call this type of handle?

I haven't got a key to it and I think I need to be able to lock the van when I start using it.

Alternatively any ideas on how to lock the drivers door on sliding door which isn't flush?

Mot Failz

Both headlights are weak

Two tyres below legal limit

Exhaust blow

Front discs and pads

Front wheel bearing

Braking uneven

Loose wiring for washer pump

Advisories

Another tyre on limit

Anti roll bar bushes

Back plates for rear brakes damp

Overall not too bad. Quote to fix including new headlights & tyres is £630

Was tested as class 7 because they said it wasn't a proper camper!

Posted

To be fair it was roughly gaffered in place across engine bay, but he said it was now part of MOT

Its all bits that wont need money spending on them for couple of years.

Posted

I'm shit as mechanics, but £630 sounds like a lot of money when you consider some top drawer part worns probably £20 each at the most, headlights a tenner a throw and what are pads and discs? Can't be that much? I know there's other stuff, but if you shop round Facebook/scrap yards/eBay you'll probably get decent tyres on Transit rims for hardly anything.

Posted

Normally I would but time is quite limited at moment. I am trying fit house buying stuff plus family illness around having three cars falling to bits around me . 😊

Brand new tyres are £30 a pop, headlights £35 each so that is third of bill. Labour is £50 am hour which is a bit more than I pay at other place but it is a keeper.

I have sort of justified it in that we are moving house with van so if you took off couple of days van hire it makes sound reasonable. Man maths 😊

Why didn't the tester accept it as a "proper" camper :?  :?  :? :?  :?  :?  :?

Posted

They can't do, unless the vehicle is reclassified with the DVLA, which has a checklist of requirements. I've had to show MOT places the V5 before as they were adamant it wasn't a camper! Cheaper MOT as a Class 4 though :-)

Posted

Fair enough and like you say well worth the money.

Posted

Was only £35 as a class 7. It is still minibus on v5 I cant get it changed until I get its taxation class change for which I need mot 😊

I didn't really probe why, he said there wasn't any real difference to me.

I will still end up with a camper (to my spec) for under 2 grand I reckon.

Anyone got a clue about the door handle?

This is what the DVSA guidance is about a camper;

http://www.motinfo.gov.uk/htdocs/tgs0a000106.htm

So basically the equipment needs to be fixed in (as Moog has done looking at his photos). So can't see what the tester was on about.

All campers with less than 12 seats are class 4 anyway.

Reading that makes me want to turn it into a playbus.😊

I need some help. The headlights the garage said they could get were the wrong ones and they are struggling to find the right ones.

I think they are square mk3. Are these the right ones? http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/231488034522?

Or is there a way to clean the reflectors to make them brighter?

Posted

Those certainly look the right ones. Looks like the chrome in the reflectors has gone altogether.

What I meant is that unless the classification has changed, they still have to test it as the original base vehicle i.e. van/minibus. Whether or not you meet the requirements, they have to go on what is stated on the V5. Strangely, the maximum price they can charge for an MOT is now *less* for a Class 7 than Class 4, not the other way round as it was before I changed the van's designation.

To me it would make a lot of sense if the MOT tester (who has actually had chance to inspect the vehicle) could change the taxation class, rather than having to send away photographs to the DVLA...

Posted

The tester tests what he is presented with. It has nothing to do with the V5. That is for the owner to sort.

The tester tests the vehicle as it is. So if it had only 3 seats he tests as is and equally if it had no seats other than the driver seat, again he tests as is.

They do not test the V5 - they test the vehicle.

Before the local DVLA offices were closed it was easy to get an MOT and then drive it to the DVLA for the class change. Now as you rightly point out it's all centralised in Swansea.

Posted

Ah, that's different to my understanding. I'm not a tester, but I'd been told that when they enter the vehicle details on the computer, that dictates what class of MOT test to carry out according to the DVLA database. None of which is helping the OP's headlights!

Posted

I'm fairly sure that I just sent a letter off and they changed mine from minibus to PLG (possibly including pictures of it as a camper).  I wished that I hadn't bothered when the tax rate crept up to £240 with minibuses still at £165 but as it was built in 1974 that is no longer an issue :)

Headlights delivered to garage. Ordered off bay on Thursday evening delivered first thing today.

I hope you appreciate the action shot including background XM :-)

I sent off paperwork to dvla who returned it and said that I need to tax it at the new tax class then send them all the documentation and they will change the logbook.

Man from ministry said yes 😊

Two advisories for rear anti roll bar bushes which seem to be hard to track down.

Next steps are to tax the mother in new class and get the tracking adjusted as it is wandering quite a bit.

Bloody ace thread and what a cracking conversion. Well done on the MOT too.

So took a load of stuff to a friends house in the Wirral today. Big boxy VN plus gale force winds meant interesting driving times.

Certainly highlighted the wayward handling.

Also definitely needs a 5 speed box fitting. 4is fine at 40 but at 60 makes your ears want to explode. I need to work out what's best way to do it as I have Jonathan Dyane's box here but need to see if it a straight swap or not.

Bring it to SF15 and attempt the job in the dark, in a field, after a few drinks? Many hands and all that...
