Suncream... any ideas how to get it off of bodywork?

Recommended Posts

Mostly 4 yr old boy sized finger marks near the door handles from driving holidays abroad. It's Factor 50 sunblock.

The car has been washed several times and they are still there. I've tried T cut, Mer wax etc to no avail, but before I give up and accept them as part of the character of the car, has anyone had any success in removing suncream marks?

+1 on this. Mrs_Stanky's car is covered with them, some from her and Micro_Stanky and others from prior to our ownership.

I had moderate success with carb cleaner, but it evaporates so fast you don't get much time to wipe it with a cloth after applying it.

There must be another way!

Suncream is probably the most orrible substance you could ever introduce to car paint work and most people don't realise the havoc it reaks on especially soft modern paint. Sadly theres the not much you can do bar repainting the affected area, the chemicals that are in the cream permeate the lacquer and kill the sheen all the way through to the base coat. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news :-(

thinners or panel wipe? I have never had anything that thinners wouldn't shift but it will need a polish after

I have a few ideas, but it depends whose 'bodywork' it has to be removed from. [/Cosmo Smallpiece]

It's for the avoidance of such awkward social situations that the interweb was invented.

That's why you order it online. It's all in the 'detail'.

It's basically a paint cleanser, used to remove oils and residues from polishing prior to finishing. But it cuts through oily shit with ease, hence it's use for removing suncream, a very oily product that will seep below/into the clear coat. I lime primed the XM when I got it and the shit it removed even after a good clay was impressive!

The lite version is non abrasive, there is a normal version that has abrasion, and produces very cool results when used with a DA or rotary on light swirls...

I'm happy to put suncream handprints on the zx and demonstrate it at the weekend if you want? Neat washing up liquid may achieve results but will dry the paintwork out a treat!

Mrs N's Gaylander has it on the black bits around the window and I've tried most of the above suggestions over the last year, except the Dodo jizz lime daiquiri Optimus miller lite ,obviously.

Thanks chaps, interesting suggestions. After posting this I did a little search and this seems to be a problem that affects a lot of peopleparents.

Lots of threads everywhere from parenting forums. detailing forums, one make forums and Honestjohn. Seems that suncream is really bad for paint, especially the water based stuff on Euro cars, because it's got the same stuff in it as paint and also the other funny stuff in it seeps into the thingy layer and it's hard to get off, or something complicated like that.

The best advice available is to definitely not get suncream on your paint, and if you do to get it off as quickly as possible, and not leave it 2 years like I have. Also it seems to affect silver/grey metallic paint most, but it might just be that it looks more obvious on those colours.

Trouble with all the threads out there about this is there's lots of well meaning arsehole in armchair type recommendations based on 'I'd try this' rather than 'this worked for me', so it's good to have some actual experience here.

I'm gonna order that dildo slime stuff, but in the meantime I've got some

and some

because they were recommended several times and worked apparently.

So I'll give it a go and post back here.

I've found cheapo Halfords tar remover gets most oily/sticky marks off paintwork.

Try setting fire to the car. That will take it off.

Something in the back of my mind says to warm the area

With a hot airgun or hairdryer.

Could be bollocks or something I picked up from the valeters

You need to go to the clinic for that mate.

If the car in question is an older VW, wrap a piece of 80 grit wet and dry (soaked in pineapple juice) around an empty bottle of suncream and rub the marks hard using a circular motion. Leave the resulting bare patches to go slowly brown to achieve that natural tanned look. Sell the car for ££££££s

I am late to this discussion but I suffered from these irritating marks on my silver VW. I tried a number of things after researching online: WD40 doesn't work - the marks just come back  after a week or so. Oddly an ordinary artist's/schoolboy rubber (pencil eraser if you are from the USA) had quite a good effect on the marks. They came back a little after a couple of weeks but far lighter and I think a second application would have worked totally. But by that time I had bought some Farecla G3 scratch remover paste. A tube from Halfords cost me £8 so not too expensive. Several weeks later and the discolouration still has not reappeared. I am keeping my fingers crossed.

Reminds me of the dark blue W100 600er a friend of mine let someone use for a posh Gypsie wedding.

They decorated it with flowers and stuff, then glued white pom poms all over it with hand cream.

After washing and polishing it umpteen times, you could still see the spots.

We ended up treating it with hand cream all over and everything was good.

Thinners nice n quick though.

This has solved a mystery of why I had kids handprints all over my old car that wouldn't come off. Little shithawks
