Why let no T&T stop you from collecting some shite? Day insurance and a test booked are all you need to drive the car legally. We recently did just that when collecting the Stanza from Whitby, We saw loads of police on the way back and still managed to get all the way back with no issues.

How much would anyone be willing to pay with it being fixed up and ready to go with tax and test?

Plus Insurance for an unknown amount of time, I don't have anywhere to put it, I work Saturdays so finding time to collect something that also suits the seller is a pain and I don't know anyone that has a trailer so I don't know how I would get up there and back using only one car.

How much would I pay with tax and test? Hard to say as I don't know what they are worth with a full year of both on them.

Edit: Slim chance that I have something else in the pipeline at the moment too.

I'll tell you what, I'll fix it up, mot, tax and insure it and you can give me £1500 for it.

You are highly underestimating how tight I am. Thanks for the offer but she's not going to be for me.

You'll fit in well on here!

It's a shame the petrol one had to be scrapped, it really wasn't worth the effort and time required to straighten it out though.

On the plus side it has donated all the parts I need to get the diesel one back on the road.

Today I cut away the rot from the drivers inner wing and battery tray, and made a template for the battery tray panel.

I cut the inner wing off the petrol one so will just be a case of welding in the battery tray panel (it was also rotten on the petrol 18) and then welding the inner wing on.

The other side will be a little more difficult as the petrol 18s passengers inner wing was no better.

I also cut away the rot from the A post on the drivers side and will be replacing that shortly too.

Again the passengers A post is in a much worse state and will require a fair amount of fabricating panels.

I'll get some pics tomorrow when hopefully I'll have the battery tray and inner wing welded on.

Did some welding today.

Would be better having some ribs but can't be arsed as it's hugely time consuming.

I wouldn't worry about the lack of ribs: it's not like a short stretch needs much reinforcing anyway.

Its a bit flimsy but once welded to the front section of the inner wing it'll be okay.

It only holds a battery anyway!

Excellent. Although it was a shame to witness the demise of the other car, at least it didn't die in vain as it's clearly going to help you a lot with getting this one back on the road.

The inner wing certainly helped, as will the drivers door, and bonnet.

The rear passengers door on mine is rotten and the one from the black car is dented, I think I'll pull the dent out of the dented one and use that.

A post is taking shape

Partridge to the renault 18 gtd thread...

Over the past couple of days I made a new inner wing for the passengers side and welded it on today.
I also welded a cock onto it.

Don't think it's too bad considering this is all I had as reference

I'm making good progress with this - I've been working on it most nights and weekends.

I'll need to get some pics, but I've now sorted:

Both fronts of inner wings

Both inner wing rails

Drivers A post, floor, chassis outrigger, sill

Battery tray

Starter motor

Thermostat

Have also made a start fixing the passengers A post and cut the rotten chassis outrigger off that side too.

After this A post/outrigger are finished, I need to move onto the rear arches and inner arches then I'll be done with the welding.

Still a fair amount of work though, need to change the timing belt, fit the drivers and rear passengers doors from the black 18, and solder the central locking wires back together.

Then I need to fit both wings, paint them and should be back on the road just in time for winter.

Top work on making the best out the petrol 18, I doubt it could have gone to a better purpose and it looks like there's very little of it you're actually parting with.  Merging two rubbish 18s into one reasonable 18 is laudable, I'd say.

I sold the rear axle from the petrol one as the only other 18 owner in Scotland needed one, but otherwise I'm keeping everything else, if mine breaks I'll probably have the part.

Only things I don't have are engine/gearbox but since it's only on 58k I'm not worried about that just yet, plus, I think an  early trafic has the same setup.

I plan to keep this car a while, it's great!

Upd8s!

Haven't posted anything about this recently, mostly a result of forgetting to take pictures when I'm at the unit.

Crossmember/jacking point welded (have done the exact same on the other side)

Drivers A post sorted

Passengers inner wing sorted, still need to weld headlamp bracket to it though (and stupidly painted it before this)

I've had to add a couple of things to my "this needs fixed list".

Nisfan and I discovered the passengers track rod end has a horrific amount of play in it, and as a matter of course that'll mean the drivers one will soon follow, luckily these are cheap, totaling £15 for a pair.

The drivers lower ball joint boot is mangled and there's a bit of dirt inside, so I'll replace this, and also the other side - these are even cheaper at £3.99 each!

The ferrules on the brake flexi hoses also don't look too great so I'll be changing all of the flexi hoses too.

Set about changing the ball joints today, bought two nos veco ones off ebay.

Started on passengers which went well, cracked the ball joint nut off without it spinning in the knuckle, split the ball joint with a fork splitter and then undone the 4 bolts that attach it to the lower arm.

New one back on fine too.

Drivers side however... had a riveted ball joint!

After some time with the die grinder and a carbide burr (one rivet left).

Funnily enough this didn't work even battering hell into the gap with a chisel, ended up having to take a slit disc to it.

Still need to remove a rivet from the arm and then fit the new one.

Got a bit of a cry-seeszz situation whereby my current daily (polo) has a noisy front wheel bearing, this usually isn't an issue but on the polo the strut and hub are combined and the bearing needs pressed out - which means I need to take the strut off, take it to work, press the bearing out and new one in and then refit.

The Cortina isn't in a fit state to drive in anything but clear skies - which if I'm honest isn't too frequent up here this time of year.

So basically I'm rushing to get the 18 back on the road, the drivers rear arch will have to be content with a bit of duct tape slapped over it until I've sorted the polo.

The timing belt will also have to wait.

Today after some careful drilling I managed to successfully drill the last rivet out - surprisingly quite well, as I'm normally terrible at it and expected there to be an oval slot in the wishbone once done. I then fitted the new ball joint which was a piece of piss.

I also received my new track rod ends, but despite the ebay picture depicting they'd come with lock nuts, they didn't, so I'll need to go down to my local engineering shop at some point and get a couple of fine pitch m12 nuts.

Brake flexi hoses arrived too and I had a go at cracking off one of the brake pipe to flexi joints using a standard 10mm spanner, but it was heading in the "round to fuck" direction, so I'll need to take my brake pipe spanner down to the unit too.

I fitted the radiator, headlamps and slam panel though I need to get some tiger seal to glue each lens onto the lamps as before they wobbled about and were basically held in by the bonnet.

I've also fitted the drivers door from the black 18, I still need to line it up properly and also wire up the central locking and electric window.

Hopefully not be too long as I need this back on the road now.

Sounds like braw progress!

Bet it'll be like a different car to drive, what with all the actual metal you have added:)

Posted

with an oil change and a new thermostat the already brilliant omgmpg should increase but will be negated by all the new metal and underseal added!

Posted

Flashed up on my timehop thing on my phone that it was 2 years ago this week that we bought this 18 off kinkersaab. How brilliant it's still alive.
