It deffo had the probe up its arse, and had to go on twice with a 30 second red line inbetween.

If its a mild jan ill fill her with veg for the test then thin it out with derv for morning starts!

Woohoo, monies haz landed!

3x tyres ordered

Rear bush set for the back axle ordered

2x shocks ordered.

Ruff, could you PM me your payment details so I can pay for the calipers? Bank transfer or paypal is fine. Any luck with the exhaust? (not ordered anything for that yet but will pony up for yours if you still wanted to sell?

nice one. we can start to amass bits to build you a cleland spec xud at chomalongadingdong

I'd fucking love one as a second car! Is there a video anywhere of it being a hooligan? Keep telling my car loving mate at work about it, I want proof though!

There was a bike up my arse this morning (as I gingerly pottered down the back road as if I boot it round corners the front end squirms thanks to the shit tyre). Would have shown him it's not nice to sit up people's arse... (and the hedge he would have fallen into would have been soft...)

My rear bushes and shocks arrived last week, so I had a bash at fitting them yesterday.

Exhaust is fucked, It came down ok, and held together fine, but I lent on it during the day and it bend a few mm with the sound of crumbling rust, sounds a bit more blowy now too...

The only thing I rounded off was one heatshield bolt, I can live with that.

upload_-1.jpg

Didnt take many pictures tbh as it was fucking hot and I forgot. Was surprisingly easy tbh, each side came undone and lowered with no fuss. Did find it easier to take the shock out of the top bracket, as it made linign the top bracket up with the bolt holes much easier

Old bushes didnt look ruined tbh, but I changed them whilst they were off

upload_-1.jpg7

However, I have the wrong shocks I think. One end has the bolt brace tube sticking out, and it is too wide to fit in

which is annoying as the old ones are mcfucked. Dont think I'm fitting the new ones in incorrectly, they didnt seem to easily fit. May re-visit that.

Either way, all back together, with only 2 washers left over! Went out for a test drive and....still banging about.

A mate jumped in with me for the shakedown test and said it sounds like its coming from the front corner. I've changed the lower balljoints and track rod ends both sides, what other bushes should I look at? Also need an exhaust, Ruffgeezer - did you manage to have a look for that backbox?

Although, I went out last night to see a mate and it seems to drive a bit better, the rear doesnt feel so ponderous, it finds rails on corners and sticks to them. So at least some improvement has been made, and I know how to drop the exhaust quickly now!

Wishbone bushes, anti roll bar drop links, anti roll bar bushes, strut mounts... could be any of them.

If it turns out to be a strut mount, I have a new one for a 405 that may fit.

Cheers for the pointers, nothing in your list is over £10 on ebay so may chip away at that!

Right, according to the parts place I bought the wrong exhaust from, my car should have a catalytic convertor. Correct or not?

Similarly, as the current exhaust doesn't have a cat, jsut a pipe straight to the fannymold, could I replace like for like or do I need to put a cat back on? It just squeaked through the emissions last MOT, which I put down to the swiss cheese exhaust... I'm hoping it doesnt need a cat as that's £65, whereas the whole correct centre pipe sans cat is only £33...

Anyone want a centre section for a citroen zx cat'd exhaust?

Posted

How old is it? If its a petrol 1992 onwards it will need one. Diesel, I don't know, likely not.

Exhausts are a real pain, when you need to swap a section you usually find the other parts are crusty on the joints where the chamfer is and the clamp goes on. Sometimes some gobbo and some tin foil does it.

Posted

Yep, it's a right pain in the arse. That's why I just want to change the whole crusty fucking lot and start afresh!

The ebay seller showed me a screenshot of this system, and it does indeed show a cat, then the section I have, then the backbox.

However, the exhaust on there currently looks liek this, infact this is what I should have ordered in the first place I think

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CITROEN-ZX-1-9TD-XUD9TE-EST-94-98-Front-Exhaust-/400754058570?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&fits=Model%3AZX%7CCars+Type%3A1.9+TD&hash=item5d4ecda54a

but it's listed as estate. Is there actually any difference on zx's between hatch and estate underneath? Going to try and get under it at the weekend and double check the fitting where the exhust goes into the manifold, and if it matches then I'll have to buy another part.

But, cat or no cat. No idea if this is an old bodge or it doesnt need one and has the correct part. There's more evidence of welding on the front silencer too.... It's 1994, July I think. L952NWK if it helps! 1.9td XUD9

Posted

It doesn't need a catalytic converter. I'm pretty sure XUDs with no emissions control did without til the end.

Posted

Sweet, so all I need to do is play parts bingo again and hope that the 'estate' pipe fits my hatch, unless I've been wrong about what a hatch vs estate is all along...

Will check the connection though before asking my stepdad for a small loan... May make a massive bong out of the incorrect part

Posted

noticeable turbo noise :)

You can never have enough turbo noises.

Posted

Just fit an early non cat pipe. It was common practise to bin cats off of these and Xantias when the rear pipe from the cat rotted through.

Seriously don't literally bin the cat, certain peugeot / citroen cats are worth £200 scrap

Posted

Yes I ought to dig the one off of my old Xantia Hdi really.

Posted

Right, new correct looking exhaust ordered! Didnt get a fitting kit though, the long slight oil leak from the back of the engine has coated the bolts anyway, so hopefully they will be ok! Only one way to find out...

Just the backbox to go!

Posted

if it has the dpf unit on there (diesel cat), I would just remove it and straight through pipe the whole thing with 1 box at the rear!

The Xantia has had zorst surgery the other day ... Dpf unit cut open and stuffing removed ( near enough totally blocked up), straight through to the back box with pipe and fitted (well welded on) a box that isn't from a car and has lower pressure!

Even drove it around the yard a bit with no exhaust attached to the manifold and it was really surprisingly quite, if not a little truck sounding with noticeable turbo noise :)

Ah no DPF here thankfully!

I sound like a chav at the moment, when I turn it on and of there's a massive rattle at the back where the pipes vibrate with the egine, then just blowing on acceleration. It's fine at a constant speed, presumably as its not producing any pressure.

Right, fuck exhausts and the horses they rode in on...

I thought I'd be sneaky and have a go at this job tonight, WCPGW?

The fannymould bolts are fucking buried, with one side even more fucked by the gear linkage being in the way. Eventually, bolts were undone. GR9 so far.

Old backbox off, and time to offer up the new pipe. Mmmm, why wont it fit onto the manifold housing?

Er, this really doesnt fit...

WHAT THE FUCK

Am I doing something wrong?

Damn, it doesnt fit...

upload_-1.jpg

As you can see, from the centre silencer back, it's spot on.

And I realise now that this is a crap picture that doesnt really show anything but...

upload_-1.jpg

The ends are waaay out. Even now, I'm still torn between it being the wrong part and im a twat, or a badly made part...

So, A few qwestuins if I may...

1 - Are there any differences between a D and TD exhaust? (this one may* have been listed as a D)

2 - Would it be easy if I found a tame welder (and may have a lead on that already) to chop both pipes off before the centre silencer, and just weld the old one onto the new one, and sleeve it? Would they still line up? I think they will, but as proven, I'm not that great at exhausts it seems...

So, old one back on, and what and absolute cunt the manifold bolts were there. Got one on ok, bu the one under the gear linkage was tricky. Ended up sellotaping the washer, spring, washer and nut together, popping it on the bolt, peircing the tape and holding it vaguley on, then twiddling a cosket and extension bar until it caught and did up, thankfully not cross threading...

The only part of today that went right was the bit done by a shiter. Ruffgeezers backbox is perfick, and is fitted now. Sadly the flange on the old centre pipe is too far gone to accept a clamp, so is 2cm away from it held up with the same bit of Dyson DC07 cable that there was before...

One possible bonus is that the manifold bolts were loose to begin with, and after a quick fire up and idle/rev when back together, it did sound quieter. I think some noise was the air rushing over the old backbox, its a bit further away now so I  think it kills some noise.

So, a failed repair. Not liking this... Still, at least I can get to work tomorrow...

I don't know about ZXs but I'd expect the exhaust to be different as on the D the exhaust goes straight on to the manifold whereas the TD will have a turbo between the manifold and exhaust.

That it does. That's that question answered then!

I had a thought, I have the pre cat section of exhaust I incorrectly bought, I'll get the end of that welded to the long pipe, after comparing the two to check they are different in the right way at the front...

Any tame welding shiters within a short hop of OX9 3XZ Thame?

Well, I almost forgot about my own thread, literally fuck all has happened.

I fitted the rear calipers ruffgeezer sold me, which was well times as the old rear passenger one was fully seized. Still need to do the discs and pads though, that can wait.

I still need to get a proper exhaust, but speaking to my mate he said that as long as it's not properly fouling anything (it isn't) and passes all the usual tests (hope it does) he will pass it, so that can wait too

I need a rear wiper motor/someone local who can use a tap to fix the fucked thread on the spindle. Getting used to the rear window being less see through, it'll start to be frosty and I can clean it every day whilst de-icing

The rear passenger footwell fills up with water. I'll have a look under there when it's up on the ramp on MOT day and see if i can find a hole, until then, fuck it, I'm keeping a Hoover Aquaplus in the boot...

No, my main reason for bumping my own thread is I have noticed a light squeal coming from the power steering. Mainly when leaving home in the morning, or leaving work at night (which is all I ever fucking do in it tbh), when cold, and at slow slow speeds there is a light squeal, which gets louder when the lock gets tighter. It goes when I'm a mile up the road.

Since I can't see a dymo label in the engine bay to say when it was changed, I am assuming the fluid has done 286,648 miles, and wondered how hard it would be to change it, and would that sort me out?

or is it a bastard of a job that can FRO?

Have a picture of my Roomba 4230 with it's top off in way of thanks for reading

Could be either loose belt or low oil level causing the noise, or even just dirty oil if it is really filthy.

Easy job really - find the low pressure return low down under the subframe, pull it off and empty into a bucket.

Running the engine for a minute or so whilst turning the steering from lock to lock with the hose off will help empty it out.

Refill with fresh oil to the low (cold) oil mark on the resevoir.

Running these pumps with no oil is okay for a little while but not a good idea for long periods, I use one of these PS pumps to pump veg oil about and it seems to be fairly bombproof, though flow rate and pressure does drop over time if you regularly run them dry.

Get the belt off for MOAR HORSES!

as Will says likely belt or PS fluid, shouldnt be too troublesome

Posted

I like the sound of a fluid change. Will look into it, thanks!

Posted

You'll notice steering response and turn-in will be better with good clean oil.

Posted

Cant say Ive noticed anything odd about the steering, but then again im probably proper used to it!

Ill ask about the oil leak from thr block that I cannot trace next I think!
