Was this a factory prototype- mind-boggling they did not build it - maybe they could not get the shell stiff enough or it was not viable?  But still. What a useful car it would have made the Mini.

It was built by Radford.

BMC did make three prototypes. One was purchased by Earnest Marples, the transport minister, to go to the golf club.

I always thought BMC made cars that they thought people ought to drive - rather than what the actually wanted. Market research was 0 - and probably thought a bit vulgar and American 😂

T'web says it was 1961 when the very first self-service fuel station opened and 1967 when the first supermarket station opened (Asda Halifax).

This for me was a bigger mistake than them not giving things like the Princess or even Allegro a hatch. The mini desperately needed this imo  it would have made it a truly practical car.

A factory Mini with a hatchback would have helped them get a lead on other manufacturers & later compete with the newer superminis like the R5 etc until the Metro arrived.

Daft old BMC/ BL.

+1 for that. Crazy not to exploit your biggest seller by extending the range. Should have been an MG Mini too. Sacking John Cooper was a rotten idea too. Etc etc etc.

Of course BMW went on to do just that with BINI - which sells worldwide.

Also in Gaydon you will find the proposed MG Midget/Sprite replacement based on the Mini.
