The central market of Haarlem in the 1920s. This square is a pedestrianized zone now, and the city got rid of the last tram lines in 1957.

P4 action there. Probably more than a 50%-50% chance car still with us.

Tennessee, 1987

The spire-like structure in the background marks the entrance to the old Belle Meade Theatre on Harding Pike in Nashville.  It opened in 1940 and is one of the few remaining examples of Streamline Moderne architecture still in existence.  The cinema closed in 1991, after which the interior was repurposed as a bookshop.  I was a regular customer when it was a bookshop, but it closed sometime in the early 2000s.  It then served a brief stint as a supermarket before going vacant yet again.  Property developers and historic preservationists have been fighting back and forth over the fate of the Belle Meade Theatre ever since.

Also now exceptionally rare is the US-spec Peugeot 505 in the foreground, undoubtedly originally sold by the former local dealer, Madison Smith's Superb Motors.  The former dealership building on Lafayette Street has also stood vacant for years, which is strange because it sits on a prime piece of real estate, just behind the new convention centre.  My old 405 estate (one of only around 1,000 in total sold in the USA) was originally sold there and I used to go there for servicing.

The 505 saloon is a 1984-on facelift model with the square sealed-beam headlights set inside opaque surrounds intended to mimick the look of the European headlights.  Pre-facelift US-spec 505s had four round headlights.
