'Hello boat people, we have a new Mk3 Escort, it's not a Mk2'.

- 'Fuck off, it's only a GL'.

(a 2-door early GL is a very rare car actually, for a few months around 1992 I had a A-reg 1300 Ghia and it was a great little car).

The oul man had a Mk.3 Escort as a courtesy car once, "TPR 263X". He was impressed. So impressed, in fact, that the next car he bought was a Mk.1 Golf.

I think there may have been at least 2 varieties of mk1 Golf body panels as well, judging by the picture.

My uncle had a red Alpine 1442 S which he managed to crash into his own house around 1983.

I remember the Usbourne Book Of Supercars featured the Research Safety Vehicle.  Some features have become common on modern cars.

No, but DVLA no longer has a record of the plate.

I didn't think to check; perhaps @LightBulbFun could work his magic?

sadly I dont get any results for that plate indicating its been inactive since the late 1970s/early 80s or before

I can however say YSxxxx is a Glasgow registration issued between January 1935 and September 1936

Surprised at that; an ageless plate that's not been flogged off by Doovla.

they cant because its been issued already, they cant flog off plates that might still be on someones car!

that would make for an interesting V765 LOL

Believe it or not its either a Renault Nervastella, often used by statesmen, including the President of France. Details here - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renault_Nervastella

1935 Renault Nervastella Grand Sport Cabriolet (ABM3) retro hf ...

Or, when you start to look into big Renaults from the 30's, it could well be a 1936 Renault Viva Grand Sport Coach Decapotable.

Was it gift from the French government?

It has to have been either a gift or at the least loaned to him via the Embassy (or perhaps the Consulate considering it's registered in Glasgow). It's unlikely that a private one would be owned in the UK never mind used in a parade, unless Winnie had a Francophile chum. But we mustn't forget the Auld Alliance; maybe it was the Glasgow Lord Mayors car and he was cocking a snook to the English?
