Escort Elba camper entered in 1970 World Cup London to Mexico.

Didn't finish.  Am not sure if they actually slept in it.  Handy for a cup of tea or a quick fry-up though. (Note pop-up roof and picnic basket. The one piece rear door is hinged at the bottom to make an extended bed platform, covered by a fold-out tent thing). Get the banjo out round a camp fire, etc.

This pic shows maybe another Elba following on. London support van?  Publicity vehicle? Lost tourist?  Don't know.

.

One can almost picture the cups n' saucers, pots n pans, bedding and potty,  all being flung around in the back of that in an off-road section of the rally !  :D

Retired (..as unsafe) : due to driver being knocked unconscious by a can of Heinz beams, five rear windows being smashed, and the co-driver upset with what the potty had poured down the back of his neck !   " I'll get you Butler " :lol::lol:

Safe from Mexican banditos?

- " Yerrr, should be alright".

(Note - rally entry 'did not finish'. - Did anyone actually see the crew or the van again?).

As the Mexico was named after its success in the rally a G reg camper or not wouldn't be known as such like the cars entered (twincams) it will have been fitted with a 1.6 crossflow better suited to the dubious fuel available in the later stages/countries .

Hold on. Don't say anything abut Mexicans. Do you remember the Top Gear/Mexican debacle? ?

Different world these days. No longer any parking on Westminster Bridge - and a lot less private cars because of the C-charge - now mostly buses, black taxis and Ubers. Cycle lanes on both sides of the bridge too. On the right hand side there are bus stops and all the guard railings are gone and there is a pelican crossing. Building on the right the former home of the Greater London Council now a hotel. Parliament at the back was stone-cleaned after this was taken so now a much lighter colour too. And to the right of Big Ben there are new parliamentary offices - Portcullis House.

Princess gas turbine. Len Lord in suit in foreground  1953. Gas turbine was a cul-de-sac for development - too hot and too thirsty - and too dangerous?

VX 4/90.

2.0 ohc slant 4, my uncle had a bottle-green H-reg one around 1973/4. Really great body style which suits rostyle wheels. Black vinyl interior which had a distinctive smell on hot summer days, sold because it only did about 21mpg if I remember correctly. It also did 100mph though. Replaced by a Mk1 Granada 2500 estate to carry his drum kit. Hmmmmm.

Why pitch your tent on the ground like everyone else when you could pitch it precariously on a board on the roofrack right on top of your car?

Make going for a piss during the night an adventure, part of your holiday memories you can look back on and cherish.  You know it makes sense Rodney. And you won't be pestered by rabbits at 6 a.m.  Asking the time.

Kits 4 pounds 3 shillings and sixpence. Includes ladder but does not include tent or bird. Or car.

It's her. You know who I mean. Forgotten her name.

Virginia Wade, the last British woman ever to win a Wimbledon singles title?
