Not driving something French would be unusual for a taxi driver in 1960s Paris, I'd think.

Great pic, lovely to see the BMC Farina mixing it with the French equivalent over there back in the day.

il était naïf et pensait avoir acquis une Peugeot 404

404 -  about 2,900,000 units produced worldwide 1960-75.

Farina all types - about 750, 000 units made 1958-72.

And that's where the profit lies and BMC's woes.

I'd tackle any journey in a 404 - and into the Sahara with an Austin Cambridge probably not.

Looks like it is a bit Friesian cold  when the photo was taken.

My beef is that the humour on here is udderly terrible.  I think you've all milked that shot to death.

Is this an early prototype or an AI image?

The leading edge of the bonnet isn't level, the valance is different, the wheelarches are too prominent, the sills are different, the drip rails are different, the roofline and rear window shape are also different.

It seems to be very different from the production car.

Good point, it would seem this is a proto of the 966.

Translate from some obscure Russian site with more photos:

Quote

In the spring of 1961, almost immediately after the launch of the ZAZ-965 model, the plant began developing a new ZAZ-966 model, and already in November of that year, a prototype was demonstrated at VDNKh.

The prototype was built in two copies. The car had a small gearshift lever to the right of the instrument panel. However, this arrangement was later abandoned because it did not add convenience compared to the traditional arrangement, and it complicated the design and made it more expensive.

That's brilliant! I remember those early 2.8 XJ's, and knew the rest BITD.

I was hoping they are still around as they have been issued with V5s in recent years, but it could be just a quirk of the DVLA system.
