Holts Duplicolour stock some of the older shades, I bought a tin of BL Dog Shit Brown last year.

I like their specialist paints, their ultra matt black is one of the best I've found, not satin like most come out

Halfords primer is absolutely brilliant stuff for models. I use it on trains and cars, used it on a few tank kits in the past too. On metal or plastic it works perfectly and sprays on lovely too.

Im 40 btw so I wouldn’t worry about hitting gifferdom!😆

You can still get Halfords Ford purple velvet? Wow. It must sell well otherwise they wouldn't put it on the shelves. There were two slightly different shades. My dad had a 74 Cortina 2000E that colour BAV 895N from 1977 till 83.  It got wrecked about a year later and no amount of purp velv aerosols would have fixed it.

My uncle had a 74 Copper brown 2000E from new till 1990, USO 969N. Totally Gene Hunt and from same period.

Weren’t there two or three different companies supplying the paint to Ford (and others)?

Sometimes you can find paint colour stickers in the car with the paint name/code and the manufacturer name. I’d imagine that the exact shade would vary from manufacturer to manufacturer or even when it was made as the mix might be slightly different etc.

Car spray paints get everywhere. Apparently the British Aerospace EAP, a technology demonstrater for stuff that later ended up on the Typhoon, had the dark blue fin and fuselage spine sprayed up with rattle cans from Halfords.

A favourite past time was to throw aerosol cans into the fires then leg it! I don’t remember them ever leaking or spraying as they heated up, they’d just explode suddenly once the pressure got too high for the cans to hold! They could get some impressive altitude on them sometimes too. 
As an adult of course you think back how stupid it was but you don’t think like that as a kid.😆

We used to go and hide loads of them in the local bonfire on Guy Fawkes night. 

It was a bit like the lighter game where you put a lighter in the fire just as your mate comes back in the room but much louder and not just potentially setting fire to your mates, putting a load of innocent families at risk instead. 

Looking back, its a bit irresponsible but nobody was ever blinded or maimed by any flaming projectiles but a lot people jumped from the sudden big bangs as the cans exploded inside the bonfire, which was our objective.

My mum had a red 1970  Mk1 Capri 1600GT from around 83 till 1990. OAV 361H. We were tidying up paint blisters on the rear arches and took the paint code to a motor factors to get an aerosol made up, a mate worked there and we would 'get discount'. Lots of discount.

The official name? Maybe 'Strawberry' or 'Apple' or 'Rose' or 'Chilli' or 'Juicy Tomato'.

No. It was 'Ford Red'.

Couple of incidents that this thread reminds me of - firstly the inlaws moving into a new house and me (aged 19 or so) helping to dispose of the big rubbish pile (builder's waste, pallets etc, you name it). In the heap was an old steel signpost, clearly pulled up from the ground complete with concrete base. Being lazy I didn't shift it from the bonfire, but instead dropped an empty aerosol can into it. Disappointingly, nothing happened, until I had forgotten about it and the heat made its way through the large mass of concrete. BANG!!! I nearly shat myself, and I'm sure the can went into orbit.

Second one was driving to work one day over the mountain road, which often has sheep laying on it in the morning - presumably warmer than lying on the grass and heather. I saw a road roller slowly trundling towards me, and as it passed I could see in the distance a fluffy cream shape, with a flattened portion next to it. I was about to turn round and have a go at this heartless bastard who had clearly just run over a sheep, when as I got closer could see it was just a can of expanding foam.
