Hi all,

I've clocked one of these for sale locally with an auto box but are they any good? Veg friendly? Slow as a retarded glacier?

NEED INPUT.

Veg friendly (if not CDi, and I'm sure it won't be) pretty slow and hopelessly rusty.

Gah! I thought ALL old mercs were?

If its the 96 onwards one (W210?) then they are generally very rusty and quite crappy in general. These are the ones with the twin round headlights.

The earlier ones (W124) were much more durable, although any cheap ones about now will be very leggy.

No, he's on about a C Class I reckon. Surprised they aren't veg friendly, I thought this was the last gasp of the old school Merc diesel engine?

If it says cdi on it then it's the newer engine and not veg friendly-The veg friendly ones came in 2.0, 2.5 and 3.0 flavours I think. All basically the same engine with a different number of cylinders. A 220 should be a cdi...

Yeah, it's a C class. I'm actually a little bored of the XM and have always wanted a veg guzzling merc but if its allergic to its 5 a day then I won't bother.

This is it, It's a C220 classic apparently

That's a very early one, the oldest ones with the orange indicator lenses do seem to have slightly less rust issues but the majority of that range seem to suffer from galloping rot just about everywhere.  Not sure if it's mostly cosmetic or extends to the structure as well but it would seem that MB went on a major economy drive just after launching these.  The shape's aged well, quite a smart looker and an unusual colour too.

I think there are better alternatives out there.  A neighbour of mine had a 1996 C280td. It was a one-owner car, with good history etc, but a world of pain. It looked 'ok' rust-wise but a quick shufty underneath showed the rot was setting in. I think it was probably one more winter away from serious issues; the lower arms genuinely looked as if they were about to part company from the car  :?

I'm serious when I say I'd probably have a Vectra 2.0dti (preferably with a previously replaced injection pump) over the Merc..

CURSES!

Google sez-

JINX!!

It's just about the only merc evAr that won't run on beg.

Looks like this motor is a no go for me then. Do they export? Failing that, does anybody here want it?

Posted

It's £175, just out of tax and test and it's in Congleton.

Wow that sounds quite appealing actually. Have you seen it?

Posted

No, it was on Ebay and I was the high bidder but it didn't reach reserve, the seller contacted me to see if I still wanted it for my high bid.

Here's a link. I think you need the Ebay app for it to work though. That app has got me into trouble so many times!

Flippin 'eck thats cheap, take it for a test and see what it needs if not get the money back on the bridge? Unless the owner is upfront about what it needs for an MOT assuming he would of tried having it MOT'd himself??

Link wont open on my tablet, how much was it?

I should be seeing this on Sunday. Seeing as it won't run on veg i'm going to have a go at punting it on. Hasn't Warren exported these before?

Here's the info on the crappy lucas pump,

type=eroo53/epic
serNo.=539405
mercNo.=604 070 02 01
ECU LUCAS
dcu==r 04010012 D
type=ed0013 (80677e)
mb
12v 4zyl diesel
a 019 545 94 32
ed 013 sw33.96 fdo1.97

I think Delphi pumps were also fitted to some of these, but they are equally as shit as the Lucas jobbies.

It looks like this,

Did any other cars have these fitted? Is there a bosch equivalent that could be stuck on? I bet it wouldn't be too difficult to adapt the car to a throttle cable rather than fly-by-wire if needed.

All this is hypothetical of course, as I will probably park it up for a few months then scrap it.
