Stoneleigh Triumph & Standard day 2014

Finally, the pictures from the Stoneleigh show that Mikeknight and I attended on a very wet day in March this year.  I took many, many pictures which you can find here: http://s845.photobucket.com/user/volksangyl/slideshow/2014-03-02%20Stoneleigh?sort=4

Here's the condensed version.

Parking was a little strange.  I wonder if normally people park on the grassy bits that were pretty squidgy and not ideal for a whole bunch of rear wheel drive cars.  Instead, everyone was directed to park on the edges of the roads.  It made for some good spotting on the way in, the place was absolutely chock full of interesting stuff.  Here's a Triumph that's had a biff on the nose to start proceedings.

20140302-01.jpg

There were a lot of MGB/Sherpa Coupés about the place too.  I took a photograph of a few of them but on the most part, when you've seen one Sports Sherpa on Minilites with an overloaded badge bar, you've seen them all.  This looked pleasantly rough and ready.

20140302-02.jpg

The 2000 estate that followed us in was superb.  I even managed to ignore the choice of wheel.

20140302-03.jpg

20140302-04.jpg

Don't see these every day, though if I recall we saw four or five on this day.

20140302-05.jpg

20140302-06.jpg

Imagine if this appeared when you dialled 999 instead of something with flashing lights.

20140302-08.jpg

Brown stag with a brown roof and a brown interior.  Carved from a block of solid Brownium.

20140302-11.jpg

20140302-14.jpg

It's neighbour was made entirely of purest ORANGE.

20140302-17.jpg

These do nothing for me, proportions are all wrong, but I know other people like them.

20140302-19.jpg

20140302-20.jpg

Aptly named.

This little moustachioed cutie was in the Tat thread not so long ago.  Paintwork was delightfully DIY, I'm glad the current owner appears to have changed nothing.

Triumph TR8 on 4 spoke Revolutions was a pleasant surprise.  Unlike the modern number plates.

Tidy little Spitfire.  I still don't understand the difference between Spitfires and GT6s and I don't think I feel I need to.

Mmmm, Sandglow.

20140302-45.jpg

20140302-44.jpg

And here's something I don't think I've ever seen and is certainly not something you'd expect to see everyday.  I'm guessing a Standard 10 commercial variant, I'm sure somebody knows.

Autoshite edition kit car.  This was so universally shoddy in that way only a finished kit car of this era can be you couldn't fail to admire it.

20140302-52.jpg

20140302-53.jpg

The only Mk1 GT6 we saw.

20140302-55.jpg

20140302-56.jpg

Another one of those rare MGs.

20140302-58.jpg

And another!

20140302-61.jpg

This was the only Magnette I saw there and it was beautiful.

20140302-64.jpg

I mean, look at this!

20140302-65.jpg

Who could say no?

20140302-66.jpg

20140302-67.jpg

Gorgeous.

We brits seem to be pretty rubbish at soft tops.

20140302-69.jpg

20140302-70.jpg

That's quite a face.

20140302-71.jpg

I love me a TR7, and this one was particularly lovely.  Just why everyone seemed to be avoiding it I couldn't say but it did mean nobody got in the way of the camera.

20140302-73.jpg

20140302-74.jpg

This colour was amazing.  It's some sort of special edition thing and since I'm really a Magpie in a man suit it appealed to me very much.

20140302-76.jpg

These were very interesting, but drew a pretty good crowd so I never really worked out what they were beyond 'old MGs'.  I didn't even get a picture of the info board, like a dufus.

This little Herald van I liked and the chutney they were selling from it was apparently very good.

Well, Mr Key of Halls Garage shall have to forgive me my forgetfulness because I can't remember what this was called beyond it being based on a Midget.  They recently bought the moulds and whatnot to produce these and have been making some much needed improvements to the originals to make them fit better and look nicer.  This example looked exceptionally nice, my pictures do not do it justice.

20140302-96.jpg

20140302-97.jpg

This was an offering from another company, not quite as pretty as that from Halls, but rather lovely from most angles.

20140302-99.jpg

20140302-100.jpg

The layout of the hall was pretty odd, it took us a while to realise there was so much of it and apparently there was a cock up with guides/brochures for those paying entry fee.  We only just had enough time to get all the way around because we hadn't realised how much more there was to see.

Pre-war Triumphs were not a thing I knew about, I was quite excited when I saw the Dolomites they had on show.

20140302-105.jpg

20140302-107.jpg

This one is a Gloria, if memory serves.  Apologies for vibro-cam.

20140302-110.jpg

20140302-109.jpg

Some more meandering and we got to the Standard-Vanguard stand which was very neat.

20140302-111.jpg

20140302-112.jpg

I forget which Standard these were... sorry.

20140302-117.jpg

20140302-119.jpg

We followed this one out of the show on closing, I was well impressed that they drove to and from the show, even if they only live a few yards away.

Great pics. The 2500 estate still looks smart, has aged well. Like the cars with original wheels best - didn't see a single one of these:

The Triumph salute.

20140302-123.jpg

Ever follow someone and think to yourself that they're a bit of a looker...

20140302-124.jpg

...and then they turn around and they don't have a front to match the back.

20140302-127.jpg

Then there was this... oh my.

20140302-130.jpg

20140302-132.jpg

A genuine, honest-to-goodness, goes to the shops for bread and Quavers...

20140302-134.jpg

20140302-136.jpg

...what's more, I got to sit in it!  Day made.

20140302-138.jpg

It was time to explore further and in the coldest, darkest, least well advertised bit of the halls we found some of the most interesting cars.  First up, a Triumph Renown.  I doubt I'll see one of these again in the tin.

20140302-141.jpg

TR7 the Autoshite edition.

20140302-143.jpg

This is another of those cars that looks familiar but I couldn't place it.  I'm sure there was a similarly scruffy one of these with a BMW straight six hiding under the bonnet doing the rounds a year or two ago.

20140302-144.jpg

Triumph Roadsters, plural, three.  THREE!  They're usually solitary creatures, this pack was quite a shocking sight.

20140302-145.jpg

First saw this at the turn of the century at Billing and was amazed by it then.  The impact hasn't lessened over the past decade or so and if anything what I've learned about cars and customising since then has only made me appreciate it all the more.  Very unusual but also very attractive way to treat a Standard Vanguard 'Beetle-back'.

20140302-146.jpg

20140302-152.jpg

20140302-154.jpg

A Sherpa Sports unlike any other.

20140302-147.jpg

20140302-148.jpg

The final picture for this show report is this car which I suspect is a Standard but I can't identify it beyond that.  I don't think I've seen another and I think it was the only one at the show.

20140302-155.jpg

Hope you enjoyed that little lot.

2 Tone blue saloon at the end is an MG Y Type, kind of a pre-Magnette version of a Morris 10 with the TD engine.   Great pics, but sorry I don't know what the pre-war stuff is either!   I agree with you on the ZB Varitone Magnette - I think these are much nicer and better value than a Mk2 Jag.   Actually I am finding it quite strange reading this on Monday morning as I had a dream last night involving a Triumph Courier.   Did you transmit these images by some kind of thought beam?!

AFAIK the difference is,Spitfire has a 4cyl engine as per Herald and the GT6 has a 6cyl engine as per Vitesse.

Yes. Also slightly uprated suspension (not that it helps much) and bigger brakes.

And a roof you can't fold back unless you're the Incredible Hulk.

All Spitfires are soft tops. All coupes are GT6s. Triumph did not make 6 cylinder soft tops or 4 cylinder coupes (except for a few specials like the Le Mans cars etc). Anything else is an amalgamation of parts using the log book from one or the other.

Only confusion could seep in where a Spitfire has been fitted with an aftermarket fibreglass hardtop but these are usually pretty obvious.

Your mystery Sprite is I think a Sebring.

I saw the exact same Swallow Doretti at POL this weekend:

Much tidier than the one I saw last year parked in the car park for another classic show (I think it was the one at Biggar):
