Fily member contacted me asking if i can fit a clutch to their car. Not done one on a corsa before. Bit of advice being sought. Have these got the plate that can be removed on it or not? Do i need Amy special tools? Thanks folks

I have done an 8v version and no plate so gearbox out. Ok to do but box was surprisingly heavy......made me realise I getting old!

Might be easier to remove the engine.

Some Astras and Corsas have a plate, but not all clutches will come out of the plate.  You're going to need advice from someone that knows the detail (ie not me).

8v was the early model wasn't it? If early one don't have it then doubt this will. Box out be fun. Are they cable or hydraulic? Guessing cable.

Cable clutch and no subframe to have to piss fart around with so job shouldn't be a ballache for someone with a bit of the old 'you know what' in the head department.

Having a lack of the proverbial in the head department when it comes to clutch changes I wouldn't like to have a stab at times there. The B is generally unfussy to work on though and it is the last of that generation of Vauxhalls.

It doesn't look it but it is quite tight to actually come out.........I dropped the rear mount bracket because I don't like to struggle. Time wise i'd say 3 hours to be safe. I fitted a pas rack on mine while it was out so didn't time the job as such.

OK folks. Thanks for replies. Off out now to sort it.

He's going out, he may be sometime..................

What a twatting fucking ball ache. Said to cousins husband shall i bring anything? Oh no says he. I got everything. One trolley jack with no handle does not count as everything mate. Luckily i took axle stands and a few bits with me. 6 hours later and the fucking thing still not done when i left. I have hemi paresis so limited use of left side. he stood there and watched for the most part as i struggled. Could have hit him with a wrench. He did help eventually though. Anyway. Gearbox split from car but not dropped yet. Engine mount in centre looks to be holding it. Drive shafts wouldn't come away and every single nut and bolt was corroded. Hoping to remove centre mount tomorrow and gearbox should drop down then. Then its time to put it all back again. All Vauxhall are shit. I've decided.

I didn't want to tempt fate, but there's no way a clutch change on a Corsa-B is a three hour job.  A pro would struggle to do it in that time on a proper ramp, with plenty of experience!

I found that out today rusty. Partially down to my disability too

Setty firey if it don't come out within an hour of me pulling up!

3 hours is ample on a ramp and everything goes well. Which it never does. With the driveshafts , firmly lever them while someone gives the inner joint a smack with a hammer. Usually shocks em out.

That's for if they are stuck in the box obv. If they are stuck in the hub just pop them out of the box and leave them in the hubs

Yup, progress... I used to swap out a Mk2 Cavvy clutch in my lunch hour, and still have time for lunch and a quick nap.

Always the way unfortunately. Not something I'd attempt myself.

Still, When Jobs Go Bad, I always seem to have more success the following day for some reason.

Posted

Same here Ian. That's why i said bollocks after six hours!

Second day. Clutch in. Will the bastard gearbox go back on? Will it hell. And just fucked my back up in process. 3 hour later i gave up again.

I don't know if anyone understands what i mean by this but it seems a relatively simple job turns into the pissing car fighting me on each step.

Welcome to my world.

Just to complete the effect have the factors send you the wrong bits , customer moaning about how long it is taking and why the bill is 5 pounds more despite the job taking twice as long as the book time cos of rusty Shit.

Some days every job fights back at me.  I've been repairing cars for 20 years, both in a full-time role at work and on my own clunkers and still, a simple job like a thermostat change/ wishbone swap can turn into a full day nightmare!!!

Tis 'the rule of sod'... and there's nowt any of us can do about it.

It is for that reason that I never give a definite time that the job will be done- that is just asking for trouble I think. "Job is done when it is done" :D

Yup , another day tomorro.

Had a customer today ask if she could wait while I did her k series head gasket. She was all pacey and impatient when I did an oxygen sensor last month.

Ha ha!  I put off people like that as much as possible, not worth the hassle afterwards.  You just know she'll be straight back when the ABS light comes on "well you repaired the car last week so it's definitely something you've done..."

Since you serviced my car my house roof has started leaking.

Fucking Since You.
