willswitchengage Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 Its the EU thats gonna fine us for the air quality. This proposed ULEZ is an attempt to avoid the fines. They're not fining the USA or China. The USA and China are not in the EU. Geddit? The USA fines itself more than the EU does us. They take pollution the most seriously - they just fortunately lack the heavy industry that plagues Europe. 99% of their cars only run on petrol, which is obviously far cleaner; most of their municipal vehicles run on gas power these days. America had smog shocks before Europe and therefore is way ahead of the game. China is catching up - Beijing has the world's worst air quality and already has numberplate bans on cars (i.e.e you can only drive every other day of the week). They're trying harder than we are, but just suffer from dilapidated dirty industry and unfavourable geography.
messerschmitt owner Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 I've been to all these places and experienced good restaurants, pubs, theatres, museums, historical buildings and general tourist bollocks, which proves that we don't NEED London. I was hoping that Scotish Independence would draw the Border about Oxford.I get asked all the time about independence now and I say I want everywhere else in Britain to be independent of London and the inside of the M25. It'll happen - they have to do it or risk a huge fine. But they should move Heathrow, Stansted and Gatwick to somewhere else not near London. costadelglosta and Shep Shepherd 2

Got to say that the US does not lack for heavy industry, there's still plenty They are very strict on emissions in California and it is true they brought in cats in the '70's for passenger vehicles. However their trucks do not have to meet anything close to the EU standards and their emissions from industry are still large. It's true that the EPA does win a case every now and again that results in massive fines however they are stretched very thin. A quick drive around West Texas or South Dakota where you can actually smell gas and chemical releases from the fracking activity as you drive along the interstate shows that they have a way to go in some areas...

Wilko220 Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 I live about 1/4 mile inside the lez, definately not a city area,my garden backs on to countryside. When lez came in i had to get rid of my old diesel camper van, which really pissed me off, never going to be able to afford another mores the pity, not even a petrol one.So it looks like the same may happen to car wise.I fuckin hate Boris and all his vanity schemes. Far be in from me to defend Boris Johnson, but it was actually his predecessor who introduced both the LEZ and the Congestion Charge - so neither of them can really be described as a BJ vanity scheme. As someone who unfortunately has to go into central London regularly, I approve of efforts to reduce traffic congestion and pollution in the capital. However, as Conalrad eloquently pointed out in an earlier post, the way they have done / are doing it is elitist, discriminatory and totally counter-productive. chaseracer 1
dollywobbler Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 For those of you who say that there is no reason to drive in the centre, you have all missed one major point. If you aren't already in the centre then you need somewhere outside of the centre to leave your car, and then transfer to public transport. Have you seen the prices of car parking just outside the congestion zone? During the day it makes more sense to leave your car right at the edge of London (or not use it at all if you live there) and use the underground or whatever, but during the evenings or a weekend that makes no sense at all. I am driving into central London on two to three evenings a week, and by car it takes about 25 minutes from Ruislip, By underground it takes an hour each way and as it gets late it takes longer and eventually stops completely. If this goes to the entire LEZ zone that will be very bad. All three of my cars old. This will not be a few old Transits but millions of cars. And what about the 604? it's not "historic" as it's not old enough so I will be forced to sell it or move Last time I went to central London, I think I parked in Cambridgeshire. Close enough!
Justin Case Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 This is just another piece of legislation coming from the unelected fascist stealth Soviet in Brussels. Not exactly, the EU passes Directives, in this case for air quality, and the member states have the responsibity as to how they meet the targets. There is no real reason for the proposed ULEZ zone, other than Boris and his cronies think that motorists are a soft touch and they can get away with it. The average diesel bus produces about 900 carbons (or about 4 Range Rovers) and lots of particulates (not sure of the actual figure, but I'm sure one of the bus experts will know it) and outside of the rush hour probably has fewer passengers in total. Banning diesel buses might well be more effective and would be worth looking at but can you see the 'stakeholders' vested interests wearing it?
Bobthebeard Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 TBH none of this "it is saving the planet" stuff actually makes any sense in reality. It is only moving the pollution elsewhere ( on the planet ). London is a tiny dot on the UK map, minuscule dot on the planet. So, London cleans up its act, but buys everything from China, Korea or wherever is cheapest. Cheapest being most polluting and mucky due to no 'Environmental restrictions'That's politics. alf892 1
Junkman Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 the EU passes Directives Yes, the unelected pan-European control and surveillance soviet, that covertly inthronisated itself and gave itself unlimited power, passes directives, and the powerless and pointless mock parliaments in the member states entertain the people by painting the directives with the democracy brush, so the people don't wake up to this fascist monstrosity.Should any of the elected people representatives in a member state not play by the rules for whatever reason, he will be immediately replaced by an unelected crony of the Brussels soviet, as seen in Greece, Italy, and soon a parliament near you, if required.

Can you imagine? Everyone disagrees on everything, hates you for trying anything and sues you if and when they get the chance! We cant even agree most of the time on a niche website dedicated to crappy old cars, so imagine the pain of trying to run an entire Country, or town, or village, or hamlet, or even one house with more than two people!Shudder. alf892 and catsinthewelder 2
