midlife crisis

Alright chaps, shall we look for a bit of a challenge?

I've mentioned it elsewhere but a change in circumstances means I have an empty garage, time on my hands and couple of hundred quid. Plus I fancy something a bit daft and pointless, & potentially topless and maybe even Italian.

Yeah, I know…

Budget is very close to £300, of course I expect a pristine Testarossa for this kind of money. No problems with getting my hands dirty, oh and can we find it somewhere in the West Country please?

In reality, anything slightly shite will be considered but if someone has a ropey MX5, MGF, X1/9 etc knocking about, I would be interested

X19 has to be the obvious choice, or a really shagged out old Alfa spider, but you won't get even an uber skanky one for that money so I am talking arse.  Back to X19 then.     Or a really fetid Spitfire or Midget?

I vote MX5. They are cheap, easy to maintain, reliable and incredible fun to drive.

£300 will probably get you a shabby one without T&T, that may need a spot of welding. For double that you can get one in reasonable condition and on the road.

I don't think you can get anything sporty and italian for your budget. You may be able to find a rather shagged MGF,  though. I don't like those, but fellow 'shitter purplebargeken does, and I'm sure he can provide some sound advice.

Depends what your definition of ropey will stretch to, and if there's a bit of headroom in the budget, but there's a pug 504 convertible on e bay. In bits and needing some welding, but worth a look perhaps? On my phone so not sure how to do a proper linky. It ticks the Italian box technically as IIRC Pinninfarina built the bodies, so it's genuine Italian steel that's done it's thing and needs tickling with a MIG.

If its a proper midlife crisis however, from what I've seen MX5s seem to be the thing.

A couple of years ago i bought a 1996 Spider with long test for £355. I spent about the same on it and broke even when I sold it 2 months later, it probably needed another £800 ish spending on it. I would rather buy better than trying to polish a turd. So Alfa Spiders are probably out, yes.

How about a knackered BMW floppytop or Vauxhall Ashtray Hairdressermatic? And Vauxhall is British Alfa Romeo, really.

MGF all the way! First one cost me £390, second one cost me £250 and the current one also cost £250. All of these were without T & T, but needed nowt more than a service and a tyre. The first one needed brake discs and pads but they came with the car.

MGF's simply cannot get any cheaper IMHO. There are plenty in breakers and parts are very reasonable. There are some great forums around with plenty of sound advice. They are comfy, handle well and look great. HGF doesn't always strike!

Go for it.

MGF's are ACE, but the X1/9 is the king. Finding one that is motable for 300 quid now is not easy though.

Midwife crisis?

Topless?

Italian?

Step right this way, Sir.

Resale within Shiter circles very probable.

Beamers are cool, but as my company rep rocket is a BMW320 (admitedly an 63 plate model, and therefore not even remotely shite) so it would have to be an E36 or older to "light my candle", as it were

I would a love an X1/9 that smelt of wet dog and whistled through it's screen seal when I exceeded 50mph

Howzabout a 306 Cabrio? Pininfarina badge on the rear wing means it's virtually a Ferrari.

Would sooner have the honda.

MGF has a kettle for an engine, sills on a £300 mx5 will be tea bag - like.

Can't think of any more beverage related puns.

I love this!  Italy is of course right next to Japan.

Both proud members of the team that cam second in WW2, along with the Billy Boxheads. It's all close enough for me

Just one example of MGF'ness: 181324085754

Not all of 'em are kettles.

True, but is there enough boot space to store the corpses?  Always an important consideration in any car purchase choice.

Italy cleverly switched sides half way through  (after Mussolini fooked off preparatory to getting hung upside down next to his flooze), so on one view Italy counts as WINNAH.

If you dismember them first, you can also store bits under  the bonnet as that holds the spare tyre in a convenient compartment.

MGF rulz!!!!

Try something a bit more left field- should be able to pick up a SCAB 900 soft top for peanuts. Also have mucho hairdresserness points aswell!

you know, I often wonder why MG went bust. With sales blurb like that, they really should be the jewel in the crown of Britsh Engineering

That would really piss off my ex-wife and score me even more H8R points with her lawyer. And thats a GOOD THING

I'll just leave this here.

Also, Mk2 MR2's can be won for under £300 with T+T, and red ones count as Italian, coz it looks a Ferrari innit.
