old banger insurance. cheap as possible!

Hi all,

I'm after insurance for my XM, I tried to swap my existing insurance from the Xantia but crappy octagon insurance won't cover anything over 16 years old. My XM is 18.

I used to insure my Audi for £150 odd so something in that area would be perfect.

Does anyone know to any ace companies that could do similar?

Ta!

Ring Adrian Flux. They will find a company for you. They got me insurance on a normal policy, keeping my NCB on a 50yr old car at classic rates (£70pa) whilst all my other cars are on a different classic policy (through a different company for £200).

AF quoted me unhappy, £440 with full no claims!

You need to do a bunch of the comparison sites, don't bother with the ones that advertise, turn your bullshit filter to max and ring around the cheapest quotes and play then against each other, then some more, dismiss with a scoff all their bollocks offers of legal, breakdown or testes trauma.cover, keep at the bastards and an introductory discount might even get pooped your way. It's not unusual here to start at a monkey and finish at around a ton.

Which comparison sites are the best then? So far I have a quote of 311 squid on compare the ferret.com

Have you tried other classic brokers ? I've been with Peter James and Classicline in the past, and both have provided reasonable quotes and good service. They can be picky with what they cover, but XMs should be OK.

RH are being arsey as it will be my only vehicle. Peter James are closed, but I'll give classicline a go!

Oh, yes... I forgot that Peter James live in the 1970s so there's nobody in the office during the weekend

Just filled out the classic line instant quite thing and they are going to ring me back on MONDAY. I  want to go kruiz'n NOW!

They are relatively small brokers, Tim. They don't have huge call centres full of ignorant droids, which is why they are cheaper than their competitors and actually know what you're talking about when you phone up to insure your ZAZ 1102 'Tavria' (or equivalent obscure shite).

Tried Lancaster ? They are usually very expensive for anything non-mainstream, but perhaps worth a try ?

Peter best does the job with bells on for me (Amazon and the MGF).

Am not going to renew with AF 'cos they is arses and have really messed me around.

Get a day's cover from DayInsure.com, then sort it Monday?  Not brilliant value I know, but depends how badly you want to go kruiz'n.

I got my last 'normal' policy with City Insurance, believe it or not they were an actual pleasure to deal with. One point of contact, no faf.

Ended up paying £325 through a local broker then paying £225 for tax. owch.

The XM is lovely to drive though!

I'm with Lancaster on the P6, they were the cheapest by some margin.

Swinton insures the volvo 240, this car is 21 years old.

I doubt Peter James would have covered it anyway. They have a blanket 20-year policy as far as I know. They are insuring my 1998 Sirion, but as a modern. Get all the classic benefits though! Brilliant.

I think my XM falls between the cracks, so to speak. Too old to be on may current policies, but too new to be a classic.

I appreciate I'm just a little bit late now but just in case anyone else is looking I can also vouch for Lancaster as they were the only company who would insure me on a classic policy with only one vehicle. They were also cheaper than the other classic rivals at £200 a year fully comp. All the mainstream lot wouldn't even touch a 31 year old car!

Adrian Flux have always been useless in my experience - I have only ever had hilariously high quotes from them, and Peter James were not much better when trying to insure the Sierra. Both of these were well north of a grand which imho is just a bit mental. :(

Peter Best quoted me either 70 or 80 something for the '97 MGF.

come for a cruze over here Tim, I'd love to see that XM. Free coffee & toast here. :)
