Anyone here knowledgable on modern renaults?

For my sins, I've bought a 55 plate grand espace iv 2.0 pez turbo with a knackered turbo cheap.

I bought it on the basis I could fix the turbo or lob a secondhand turbo on it and make a bazillion in proffitz

I've done a bit of googling but can't find reliable info as to whether I can fix it in situ or have to drop the engine out the bottom

Anybody know?

I bet you'll have to take the motor out or at the best remove the complete front of the car. You need to pull the motor out to do the cambelt on the Avantimes so I bet these are the same. Good luck with it, I hope it was cheap as by all account they're complete bastards!

Sub £500, debating whether I punt it on as is or spread lots of bits of plastic all over the workshop and take it apart.

Looked on renault forum and most discussions were geared to replacement on 2.2 dci and the shitty 99p disc I bought off ebay was no help

Ask Mr Reno 139 (Paul)  -on here, from time to time. He works on these for a living. Really nice, very knowledgeable & really helpful

I only know enough to avoid at all costs. I know it doesn't help you but I have heard too many horror stories from various work mates who've had them.

I'd totally roll the dice on an early 2000s Renault, but it'd have to be a Vel Satis, top spec Laguna or Avantime. And I wouldn't buy one that's already broken since they're not exactly pricey in functional condition.

That's not advice, sorry.

hi mate, i have the same issue, i bought a scenic diesel 7 seater very cheap last year that just wouldn't start. after 2 months of stress i ended up taking it to a local renault specialist. that was in november, and its still there. they cant find out whats wrong, and im sh***ing myself to see the bill if they ever fix it. i hope you have better luck than me. but ive learnt a valuable lesson,i will never ever buy another renault. this is my first and last.

i know its not advice, but i wish you all the best with yours.

gary.

I think there needs to be an award for anyone brave/crazy enough to buy a modern Renault. Something like an Autoshite Medal for Gallantry.

I agree with everyone else step away as soon as possible. Anything from about 2000 on will be a hateful pile of crap. Renault lost the plot with the last espace, they went from one of the best people carriers to the worst overnight. £500 for a runner is about all they are worth. At least it isn't a dci there is no quicker way to get rid of cash than one of those. Saying that I have been offered an 03 new shape espace dci needs an engine for £250. I still turned it down even though I have a spare engine

My dad had one as a hire car for a week about 10 years ago and I thought it was mega. They're nice inside and really well equipped.

I recon I'd have one if it was mega cheap but it seems that at the first sign of bother the ECU presses an eject button that fires it out the bonnet to safety with a little parachute attached meaning re-starting them is impossible.  The internets also mention the 2.0T get 18-22mpg, which isn't very good.

Renault start with this. Made with purest Unobtanium.

Then build up the whole car around it

I know it will be a hateful job,but I think it's worth a go, I'll pull some bits off and see how terrible it will be,space is at a premium so if it can't be fixed quickly/ easily I might ebay it off.

I did a HG on my SAAB 2.0LPT 9k.

Getting the ex.man off was a bind.... I double-nutted the exhaust studs, extracting them from the head, and was able to slide the ex out without taking the trrbo off - put back the same - slid the ex gasket in and reinserted the studs.

Wouldn't want to do it again.

I don't know anything useful about these engines: I killed my Avantime's 2.0T engine with a gulp of floodwater.

But I am interested 'cause nearby there is an £800 Vel Sofa that keeps winking at me on Autotrader and I really would like another go at an Avantime...

But it is the Renault-ness that holds me back, they can be so bloody. Maybe the secret is to buy them two at a time, to give you a chance of fault-finding by substitution.

With reference to the o.p.: can't you just dismantle the turbo, throw away the windmill thingy inside, disconnect the oil pipes, plug all the holes and use it as a 2.0 NA?

That would be cheap and shite.

Ahh, if only life was so simple......

Lol, what utter rubbish. AS is so full of rubbish sometimes. What they actually do is hang the headlights on strings in the middle of the factory and assemble the car around them. After clipping the headlining into the rear pillars they can finally cut the strings without the car falling to the ground. IF you'd ever changed a headlight unit on of these you'd have known that.

I have, and that's quite true!

I just could not believe it that I'd stripped the front of the car to the point that I was considering taking the wings off because they both needed to come off so I could take the bumper off to get to the headlight fixings. How did they EVER think that was a good idea to allow changing something as simple as a smashed headlight? :D

its all designed so you have to take every job, no matter how poxy it should be, to the main stealer where you will be parted with ALL of your money, rather than picking up a bulb from ASDA and doing it in five minutes in the garden yourself

I did take the guts out of a metro turbo many years ago as the owner didn't want to spend any money on it. I had to put blanking plates over the oil feed and internally so it didn't leak exhaust into the inlet. Took a few hours but got it back on the road long enough for her to trade it in. Probably no where near as easy on a renault though. I would scrap it especially if you haven't heard it run. One of the favourites is to say that it won't start due to a faulty turbo. Even with no turbo fitted it should still run (will piss oil everywhere though). If it won't start you can be certain it has melted pistons at least

My old man had a Megane, bought new at 51 plate, depreciated like falling masonry, but i've got to say had a really good cassette player, the best i've ever had in fact. Was piss easy oil change as well. Apart from those two things it was cack.

I suspect the ultimate answer to that question is
