Renault 6TL "Crapaud"

I think I have the special tool for holding down the liners in the block amongst all my gear here if it's of any help.

That would be a big help, assuming it's small enough to post without hassle? I'd feel happier if I could actually get the pistons moving before putting the head back, although I doubt they'll be removed for a bore job (unless I'm instructed otherwise :-) )

And no, I didn't drain the head or cooling system prior to lifting it, mainly due to the fact that I'm a massive retard. Although at least 2 of the pistons appear to have a powdery black coating, so they clearly needed a good clean in any case.

@Mr Lobster:  I've dropped a message, I had missed the original post.  Super useful and definitely save those from the skip if I can.  Thank you for the tip off.

Right, I've found two liner clamps in my boxes of special tools but I'm not sure which one will fit as I haven't got a genuine R6 service manual. Not sure what the part number is on the top one as I can't see it marked but the bottom one is MOT521. At a guess I'd say the bottom one would work. Failing that I guess you could improvise, maybe with some big thick washers?

Yeah, I've had expert advice (via Angyl) that large washers will do the job, but a clamp would be preferable.

Sorry to be a pain, but could you estimate what the postage would be on the clamps, if I were to borrow them? If it's less than the cost of some bolts & washers, then I'd be grateful for the use of them.

Full gasket set bought too, once I get that in the post I'll send it and the HBoL I've got over to MrDuke because why do I have the HBoL here?

Whereabouts are you sir? If you're anywhere on the N.E. Lincolnshire to Halifax route I'm going that way tomorrow. If not I'll find out postage.

I'm on Anglesey, so I fear out of pretty much everybody's way. :-(

Hehe, yeah that might be a bit of a trek. I'll work out postage for you.

I've checked and it should be about £7 max to post this thing.

Stroke of luck in the form of two NOS Renault wings for free.  Delightful chap that gave them to me wouldn't accept any cash for them.  They just need a repaint and can then be refitted to replace the tatty and dented wings on the car at the moment.

The workshop manual I have is for the 845cc version, so not a lot of help for identifying the correct liner clamp (845cc engine uses two separate clamps, which are basically metal plates which bolt in between cylinders 1&2 and 3&4, presumably using the head bolts).

Good score on the wings.  R6 body panels are always worth grabbing if you can.  I bagged myself a NOS scuttle panel for about 20 quid (thanks to a heads up from Mouseflakes of this parish), and the chap threw in an inner wing and a spare tailgate for another tenner - somehow managed to shoehorn everything into the back of my Rover 200.  I have a feeling I may need to bite the bullet and pay someone to weld in the scuttle panel this year...

No, I picked them up from an old boy in Northants (Kettering IIRC) who had a very early R16.  He did mention that he'd sold a lot of R6 stuff to somebody in Lincs though.

Ah genial! La Renault 16TL, une bonne voiture. Et aussi avec le "made in La France" vignette, vous savez que vous avez quelque chose solide et bien faite monsieur, ne inquiétez pas.

Bonne chance.

MrDuke and I have been very busy and while the little Renault has taken a back seat it hasn't been forgotten.  With the head stripped, the only obstacle presently to rebuilding is, I'm told, stubborn valve springs due to HBOL instructions being their usual helpful self.  MrDuke is taking the initiative and has a Plan.

Happily, the car has let in no fresh water and it sounds as though the little car is actually watertight, something that Wales is uniquely situated to prove at all times of the year.

Unfortunately, those optimistic plans of attending Shitefest and driving home have been scuppered and we shall instead be looking at alternative solutions, probably involving trailers rather than many, many hours of ear-numbing miles in a car that probably shouldn't be pressed into such heavy service after so long a slumber.  Never fear, I still have every intention of driving this car out of Wales under it's own power if at all possible, or at the very least coasting down a long hill into England before phoning the AA to come and save me.

It might not seem it, as I've been so quiet about it, but I am still very eager to get my mitts on the 6 and to see it back on the road, I've just had Princesses and work taking priority recently.

I would tend to agree - I wouldn't want to drive my 6 back from Wales, and I know that it's mechanically in good health.  It's the thought (and the noise) of holding a 42-year-old engine at 4,000 rpm for hundreds of miles that puts me off.  I must be getting soft - when I was a kid my dad used to drive all five of us from Oxford down to the Auvergne in our 6TL.  Mind you, it was only four years old when he bought it (but already going rusty...).

Mustard mitt, when I owned the now-Bickle early, 845cc Renault 4, it was horrendous at motorway speeds - and that's coming from someone who owns a 2CV. It sounded horribly strained at anything above 60mph, whereas the 2CV seems to smooth down once the engine internals start approaching warp speed.

Well... my quote of the year :)

That's because the Cit's pots are working WITH each other, not attempting to tunnel their way out through the exhaust ports...

I've had a bit of a wake-up call from my GP today and I'm evaluating a few things in my life that I need to change.  For that reason, I might have to put the Renault up for sale.

I say might, because at present it is costing me precisely £0 to keep with MrDuke thanks to his good grace but that something will have to give in the near future and this is the easiest thing for me to part with.

If I have to sell it, I'd like £200 to cover the costs invested but accept that this may be wildly optimistic.

Presently the engine is in two halves while MrDuke rebuilds the head and hopefully the engine will be in one piece and at least free turning if it becomes available.

It will come with two NOS genuine Renault wings.

It will have no MoT or Tax

I have the V5 in my name.

I don't particularly want to sell this car and it's not formally up for sale just yet, but I have to regard it as a very real possibility and this is the easiest one for me to let go at the moment.

Don't think thats optimistic at all. Wings worth that surely, and the car must break well too. Would be a damn shame. Hope the news from the doc wasn't too bad,and you can get through it with a good prognosis. If you don't need the cash, would be shame to sell. Get well soon dude

All of what he said.

Have a break and take stock of things. You will be selling the Wedge of Redness at some point, the Wedge of Beigeness will be sorted. You have the 'French ticking time bomb' for a while and will move that on at some point no doubt. The little Renner can then be your prime focus. View it as a long term project to do bits as and when. You will kick yourself if you flog it without giving it a go (or we will kick you, whichever).

You've had some negative news, let things settle down before making any concrete choices. I've been in the same boat (well, similar).

Take it easy bud.

Ken

PS...... May have to wrestle others to be top of the potential buyer list if you completely disregard all the things said above'ish. Keep going matey!!!

I hope that things sort themselves Vulgalour. You were really chuffed to get hold of this and it'll be a real shame if you can't see it though.

As said... hope it all works out for you, I know about these stresses.  I'm there with you.

This has provisionally been sold now.  More details in the future.  One less thing for me to worry about, which is a Good Thing.

I now have no idea what's happening with this car.  Technically it's now joint-owned by myself and MrDuke, but he seems to have vanished which is rather worrying.  I thought I had his telephone number, but I don't.  I hope all is well with him, there's been rumblings about buying this back at my end and I need to find out what's been happening with it since the last update.

I have booked a trailer with the intention of activating collection/liberation of the small green rotter from Walesland.
