Aluminium Jaguars

Anyone had any experiance of the X350 Jag. XJ? I have never tried a Jag but this model is plummetting in value towards affordability and I fancy the aluminiumness and these are the last chance to get a Jag that looks like a Jag.

(I think the current models look too much like Vectras)
I hate the old-farts-club style of the interior and I know they have electronicy nonsense and air-springs.

but no rust...........? Or would I be better of looking for a rot-free steel one. At least that would be straight six.

PS. petrol only!

I'm saving up for an alloy XJR.

There will be the odd expensive foible but that's got to be expected from any car that cost £60k new.

I think they just look a little crap. They do not exude the same premium image as the earlier models IMO which is what I would go for. However, I am not really someone best fitted to talk about classiness so you may simply wish to ignore my thoughts.

A mate had an 04 XJR. Faults included sticky powerfold mirrors, THAT bloody Transmission Control Unit software fault that is the bane of many Ford-era Jags, and the electric handbrake sticks if the car isn't used for a week or two.

These things suffer from squeaky transmissions too. What you need to do is drain a litre of gear oil out, and replace it with a special additive (from Jaguar dealers) to shut it up.

The thing went like a bat out of hell, mind. 4.2 Supercharged V8, same engine as was in my father's S Type R.

EDIT: Additive part number is C2C 37157, trans fluid is C2C 8432.

I think I agree, but it is the slightly wrong, but definitely a Jag bit that appeals to the shiter in me.

I dislike the classic Jag scene and wouldn't spend the money on a new one even if I had the cash and I have avoided them at the "final owner" level in the past because I can't be bothered with rust.

Trouble is, if something doesn't work, I will remove it or ignore it unless it is vital for go, steer, stop or warmth but is that approach just not practical with something so laden with bling toys, exploding cushions, computers and what not?

I once got a lift with a chap to an event in one of these. I thought it was just a couple of us, but it ended up being 5, I was in the back, never, ever again, no no no. 5 seater? Only if you're a stick and the front passengers are under 5 foot with the seats forward.

Another older chap who was with us was heard to comment "I thought we were going in a Jag? This is more like a Mondeo" - whoops!

I reckon once these are into shiter territory a good one will be a proper bargain. Besides... If it goes pop in an irredeemably expensive fashion, isn't aluminium worth a small fortune over the bridge?

As an aside I reckon these are a decent looking barge, particularly pre facelift.

The Mondeo would have more space in the back.

But I've never heard anyone say the interior is like a rep-mobile.

The 3.0 V6 seems to go forever, although the diesels can cost a fortune when they go wrong. I was offered a 56 plate 3.0 Sport in silver with XJR wheels last week for £3k,it's done 70,000 miles and is being sold by the widow of the second owner. I'm very tempted but don't know what I'd do with it, it's too old for me to work, too new to have as a fun car and when I suggested to Mrs N. that she might smoke it around she replied 'Do I look old enough to drive that thing? ' a question that was apparently rhetorical .
