You too can be Sam Glover for a weekend

C'mon boys -we do this all the time!

I've probably imported half a dozen cars from Europe this year, have one en route right now (story will be added when it arrives, shortly after Crimble) & am negotiating on 2 more, currently.

I buy what I fancy -as long as the price is right. The vast majority aren't -esp when you dial in collection costs.    I like rare chod, and have to keep import costs really low (wife is always watching!) but its no more difficult than travelling the UK equivalent distance.

If you're worried about overseas breakdowns, take out ADAC cover next time your breakdown renewal comes up. Covers the whole of Yurop (inc UK), English speaking, price comparable.

I've hosts of import stories - complete with trials/tribulations but I've always got them back.  Happy days

Even if my passport was still valid, I am possibly at risk of getting nicked in France.

Oh oh, foreign legion deserter ;)

I do fancy a trip over to collect something unusual that I like. I do have the benefit of almost free rail travel which makes things a little easier / cheaper to get over there. Still, mostly I guess for a private person its going to be finding a seller who ticks all the right boxes, and doesn't end up making the experience a nightmare on arrival!

Couldn't possibly say.

It can't be that hard to convert a Mk1/2Escort to RHD? I'd need a dash, carpet, sunvisors, instrument cluster, front scuttle for the wipers, pedal box, headlamps. I wonder if I'd need to alter the wiring loom?

And you could probably get most of that stuff from a fastford 'scene' nutter out to make yet another rally replica ;) ??

The thought of bringing some chod back from mainland Europe crosses my mind quite frequently. With me thoughts vary between something to try and make money on to cars that weren't available over here. I was contemplating going for a 3dr Range Rover from France, but I think I may end up going for a 90's Lancia, a Dedra turbo diesel estate or a Delta HPE. Maybe next year ....

What was the site with chod from Malta? I seem to remember seeing some rhd beauties asking for an epic collection journey.

It doesn't matter which hand drive an Ezzy is when you drive it into a tree.

That depends on which side you hit the tree

I can't be James May for that same reason :(

Nigel: yes, it was you and Mr Boll I had in mind as the authority figures in this thread. :-D   You between you have all the experience we could ever wish to tap.

As for Escorts: don't worry about converting them to RHD, the rally boys are quite happy sitting on the left.

I quite fancy a Leboncoin chod collection run too. I'd like to do one with a view to making a small profit, because if the enterprise was financially successful, I could justify doing it over and over again.

I think this would be a good road trip if done with another shiter. If it were to be a joint venture with someone else off here, there would be someone to share the driving and chat about chod with on the road.

A 3.5 tonne recovery truck with an A frame would be handy. One car for you and another for profit. Get Cavette to write you the rules out saying you can run without an MOT cos Calais is less than 100km from British territorial waters. The French plod will understand.

I'm listening to this to get me in the mood for some French.

In a very cursory browse of that, I found a Renault 16 for about £800!

The blue one? I took the liberty to post it in the I-pay thread.

Since Mister Ballsack posted that link, it has been a hot topic among my chod fancing chums as well. Romantic notions of running out there in the wagon and bringing a H van back to ca$h in on George Clarke's telly programme, or a nice 404 for the summer. Alas it's Crimbo week and I've been told my broken shite needs mending first.

After some* time we are actually doing this. Ferries booked for Dec 11 with a load to Lisbon to deliver for a friend, however finding our prize is proving a bit more difficult.

Me old mukka Jon really wants a non-monged two door Rangie with a Tdi, or an exceptionally tidy four-headed-monster powered slightly older version, for no more than 4500 euros. We lost out on a MINT silver one last week, too slow! The ideal candidate has been found near Porto but negotiations have been a bit 'meh' we suspect due to the Portuguese fella thinking he's being scammed. So we've got a portuguese mate to ring him up!!

More soon hopefully...

Would you have enough room for a Vespa 400 on your truck. It is partially dismantaled but all the bits are there located between Rouen and Paris. My mate is trying to buy it at the moment. It would want dropping off near Cambridge. They are only small things.

Oh well looks like I might have to go and hold his hand then. I have found a couple of Honda CB125 twins near by so maybe I can bring something back for myself as well

I've killed my IPhone charge socket so have not quite worked out how I'm gonna do live updates, maybe borrow the wife's!!

I have new passport. France has been mollified, so hopefully no detention upon arrival hehehe.

Have a bit of space.

Money. Ah. Fuck

Good luck with the mission.

A nice 3dr LHD Rangie from Europe is on my (distant) radar as well

If you find a tidy 70's Simca 1000 bring it back for me please :)
