Erm, wasn't that the first car Lamborghini ever produced? That's probably the going rate for one to be honest, a 400GT sold for that kind of money recently.

Alas no - it wouldn't fit in my garage, and it was in the sort of condition where if it had been left outside over winter it would have needed serious work come the spring, so I sold it. I last saw it at a show just over a year ago - it had been badly painted in dark blue, but the metalwork appeared to have been tidied up. It was a lovely thing to drive - I'd never used a pre-selector 'box before but I was soon converted to the cause. It handled beautifully too.

I bought it from up Newark way - Baz of this parish gave me a lift up there in his Renner 11 and I drove it back. It was still Italian registered. It was the Fiat/Iveco Sofim-powered version but still wasn't exactly quick - earlier VM-engined versions must have been glacially slow. It was very comfortable though, well equipped and had a brilliant turning circle for a big off-roader. And it was BIG - we stopped at McDonald's on the way back and I parked next to a Range Rover Classic, and the Rayton made the Rangie look like a Terios.

 

To be fair, most of the body panels were OK-ish, and the chassis itself was rock solid, it was just the body frame that was completely rotten, and would have needed fabricating pretty much from scratch. I eventually decided I'd never get around to it and sold it to a chap from Surrey (IIRC) who was going to use it as a runaround on his farm. I used the proceeds to buy the Innocenti, which was similar in many ways (Italian, left hand drive, small-scale production, etc.) but about a tenth of the size.

Yup. There was a fibreglass cover sill over that when I picked the car up, so the full horror didn't become apparent until I got home and started poking around. To be fair, that was the worst bit of the car, although the rest wasn't really that much better.

Funny you should say that - it took me ages to plough through my Photobucket account last night to find pictures of the Rayton, because I was stopping and reminiscing about some of the weird and wonderful vehicles I've owned over the years (if I had a quid for every time last night that I thought "I shouldn't have sold that" or "That would be worth ten times what I sold it for now" I could probably have paid for the Subaru). I was thinking at the time that I could do some sort of self-indulgent "my past shite" thread, complete with pics, but it was getting too late by then to start it. I'll have a go tonight when I get home.

Have one off me. IPTOC Clive reliably informs me that this 'un is as rusty as a tug boat and missing most of its engine. He'd be better off breaking the LSD and back axle separately. He'd realise the starting price on that alone, as any fule kno that the rest of a Piazza is more or less worthless to the outside world unless you're talking to another Piazza owner.

 

Just FMI, how do you embed an image in a link, and how do you get images off eBay to do that?
