cort16 Posted November 29, 2013 Posted November 29, 2013 I quite fancy a 4x4. I priced winter tyres and wheels for my daily and it's definetely more sensible* for me to buy a ropey old 4x4 to clog up the front of the house. I've also never owned one so quite fancy dipping my toe.I hopefully have a buyer for my BMW so this gives me about 1000 quid to spend. I'm not going to be doing any hardcore 4x4ing it's really for light winter use and dragging shite to the tip or back from the scrap yard. Fuel wise long as it can do around 20mpg I can live with it as I'll only be using it once or twice a week. Any ideas? I like these. This one is 1100 quid so immediately over budget. I quite like this but it looks like a bit of a mish mash http://www.gumtree.com/p/cars-vans-motorbikes/land-rover-discovery-tt/1040479385#photo-content http://www.gumtree.com/p/cars-vans-motorbikes/ford-ranger/1040478209#photo-content
Micrashed Posted November 29, 2013 Posted November 29, 2013 I still really really want a shorty fronterror. Its on my ebay "search" list thingy. Springtime Im off searching in earnest ( I hope he doesnt mind)
cort16 Posted November 29, 2013 Author Posted November 29, 2013 No. My previous Frontera experience wasn't a good one.
Rusty_Rocket Posted November 29, 2013 Posted November 29, 2013 Fronterror is a good bet possibly..? No major rust issues and the 20NE engine is of course a honey I'm obviously biased towards my early Discovery but would I recommend one for £1000- possibly not!! Well, that's unless you can find a good solid one. Take a LR person with you if you do decide to view one. The TDi will treat you with close to 30mpg. cort16 1
Jim Bell Posted November 29, 2013 Posted November 29, 2013 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1981-LAND-ROVER-88-4-CYL-RED-/291024360464?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item43c2675410 Be a winner.
cort16 Posted November 29, 2013 Author Posted November 29, 2013 I'm not a huge fan of discoveries. That one caught my eye as it's a v8 with LPG and a 3 door. What's the deal with the discovery diesel engines? Is it 2.5 good, 3.0 bad or is it more complex than that?
cort16 Posted November 29, 2013 Author Posted November 29, 2013 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1981-LAND-ROVER-88-4-CYL-RED-/291024360464?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item43c2675410 Be a winner. I'd only take it if they could prove the climate control and airbags were fully functional.
Jim Bell Posted November 29, 2013 Posted November 29, 2013 Airbags and other paraphanalia presumably included: http://www.gumtree.com/p/cars-vans-motorbikes/ssangyong-korando-24-gls-4x4-great-off-roader/1040201767#photo-content Craig the Princess 1
Lacquer Peel Posted November 29, 2013 Posted November 29, 2013 Buying a 4x4 for the winter is for FUDS.
Rusty_Rocket Posted November 29, 2013 Posted November 29, 2013 I'm not a huge fan of discoveries. That one caught my eye as it's a v8 with LPG and a 3 door. What's the deal with the discovery diesel engines? Is it 2.5 good, 3.0 bad or is it more complex than that? Series 1 Discovery (to '98ish) has a 2.5L TDi engine or the old Rover V8. The TDi comes in 200TDi form (to 1994) and 300TDi ('94-'98). The diesels are on the whole bullet proof, return good performance and economy. Mine runs on 100% biodiesel for extra shite-points. The 300TDi is a development of the 200 but in the real world, there's not a lot of difference.. The cars were never badged 200 or 300TDi- it was an internal code that has become part of LR speak. The V8s are lovely (and cheap..) but beware slipped cylinder liners and cracked blocks on 3.9/ 4.0 engines. Early Discos had a 3.5 on carbs, which lasts forever (or until your bank balance hits zero). Ps- Range Rover P38s are easily with your price range, but even though the rust free chassis, connolly leather and climate control is so tempting, DON'T GO THERE!!!!! cort16 1
Doctormop Posted November 29, 2013 Posted November 29, 2013 Isuzu Trooper?Have heard a few good things about them and they seem to crop up regularly for £800ish

cort16 Posted November 29, 2013 Author Posted November 29, 2013 I never thought about a korando I quite like the look of them. Four traks are pretty thin on the ground now eh? That plastic body kit is a grot incubater.

anonymous user Posted November 29, 2013 Posted November 29, 2013 I can't believe nobody has suggested panhard65's Espace quadra, or has he sold it? The big bully-boy 4x4 pick-ups don't seem to be that good in snow, (unless you have something heavy in the back). What about a nice Justy or 4x4 Panda?
cort16 Posted November 29, 2013 Author Posted November 29, 2013 That Quadra Espace is on ebay just now but it's bloody miles away and broken I think. Also the 4wd is disconnected. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1989-RENAULT-ESPACE-QUADRA-2000-I-BLUE-MOT-AND-TAX-SCRUFFY-BUT-RELIABLE-/221325595603?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item33880893d3
anonymous user Posted November 29, 2013 Posted November 29, 2013 Well then that's exactly what you need, a broken 2wd 4x4 and what do you mean miles away, it's quite close (to me).
cort16 Posted November 29, 2013 Author Posted November 29, 2013 Great, if you could fix it, reconnect the 4wd and bring it up to Scotland I'd be willing to pay you 7p a mile.

cort16 Posted November 29, 2013 Author Posted November 29, 2013 This one. Well when I say sold it's still sitting outside the house.. My mate wants it but he has to sell one of his cars first.
skattrd Posted November 29, 2013 Posted November 29, 2013 TATA - Gurkha if you can find one, or a Safari for something more modern. They also do a line is shite pickups as well.
Dave_Q Posted November 29, 2013 Posted November 29, 2013 Did somebody say shite pickup? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/171183677821?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649 It's pretty local* to you as well, it's in scotlandshire somewhere.
dollywobbler Posted November 29, 2013 Posted November 29, 2013 Why is it always left to me to recommend these? cort16 1
