Take one Peugeot 205 STDT (snigger) with a poorly 1.8 turbo XUD donk.

Take one (free) 306 XRDT, with a good 1.9 intercooled turbo XUD.

Remove 1.9.

Steam clean*, fit new cam belt and clutch - 1.9 plate, 205 cover. There's a sort of water manifold on the turbo side of the block which needed swopping for the 205's.

Rob 306 of bulbs and various other useful* bits, load up for trip to the bridge (£96)

Errr and then I'm afraid I didn't take any more pics... we did get the 1.9 in and bolted up on Sunday, and Neil had a few hours off Monday to splice in all the later type leccy connectors to the 205's engine loom and get it fired up. We used the 306's power steering pipes as the 205 had a totally different set up with the pump mounted on the bellhousing and driven by a v belt from the end of the camshaft. Plumbing in the intercooler is going to be a bit of a ballache as various things are in the way of each other, but hopefully it will be a worthwhile swop.

BTW the 1800 was so shagged you can easily turn the crank over with one hand...!

Bet it's going to be a bit of a mover with a 1.9 in!

THREAD APPROVAL RATING: ELEVENTY/2.

you must take a video of this thing moving briskly, i take you are turning the boost and fuelling up so that it can annoy audi/bmw/anyotherroadbully

Yes it should go quite well... the 1.8 had already been done (probably contributing to it's demise), unfortunately it is a lucas pump so a bit more of a ballache to mong around with but beggers can't be choosers!

I approve of this kind of endeavour greatly and this perticular endeavour absolutely.

Hmm there may be someone else around here with a keen interest in this subject...

Wow. Let me know if you would like to sell it!

Posted

...there he is. Don't sell him it Mr.Scruff, he has enough already!

This sort of thing needs more encouragement!

As others have said, video of its new found rapidness once completed please.

The current thinking is a Landrover Td5 intercooler hidden behind the front spoiler, with some funky pipework over the top of the engine to the fanimolds... We'll see!

Neil has everything fitted up and has swopped out the 'tamperproof' solenoid on the injector pump for a normal one. Should be running tonight - fingers crossed.

Afraid it won't be for sale anytime soon, if it is I have first refusal, should not have sold it to him really it is a GR19 little car. Here it is kicking Cortina ass at the Pod

I too will be interested in the outcome of this...!  The intercoolsr thing is a ball-ache, I'd thought about it for my 1.8 but space is tight.

I'd love to drive this kind of thing to work every day, I bet it's great especially with a bit too much fuel for the boost leaving sooty marks all up the back of it, maybe I'm easily amused.

Funny thing is that the power output is pretty much identical for the two engines. The main difference is torque - the larger engine unsurprisingly has a good chunk more. Should be a lot of fun!

If you run an intercooler down the front it'll be lag tastic.

The standard set up is pony as relies on air between bonnet and sound deadening and intercooler acts as a heat sink for the engine/under bonnet area.

My 405 STDT estate suffered boost dropping off something chronic towing a twin wheel trailer with a 200SX on it.

Cured by what I knew to be an Opel GT front panel found at a hot rod meet for £15.

Direct ram air straight into the intercooler, took a bit of measuring to get the alignment right but worked a treat, up hills on motorway no boost drop off in the middle of summer and no cocking about with piping, just make sure the rubber seal where the intercooler bolts onto fanimold is in good nick.
