Thinking about a 4x4 but dont want a tanklander

Possibly I may be swapping jobs, the new one entails blatting up to the farmlands of Cumbria once in a while. I thought a 4x4 might keep me mobile in snow and mud, but don't want anything lardy and land rover shaped. Didn't Subaru do a small one? I did think about a Panda, but old ones seem to be rotten and new ones don't seem to be in shite territory yet.

The other answer is buy a enduro bike, but lack of space for bits and bobs and lack of heating in winter makes treks up the M6 look less appealing.

Well clearly you need a Sierra Estate Ghia 2.9i 4x4 then! Very nice cars

Subaru Justy? They're just as good as rotting as Pandas, but a bit more reliable.I had one last year for a few months and it was a lot of fun, and fine on long journeys in spite of the highly-strung engine.

How about one of these? Must be super-rare and not sure quite what their off-road ability is, but how bad can it be for 99p? :)

Or for some turbo fun maybe this (if the price doesn't put you off)

So its going to be 9 years old by the time I finish paying for it..... Hmmmm...

Slightly more up my street Justy

Surely 'only' five years, if my maths is right?Mazda 626 4wd? I've seen one or two late '80s examples, non-sporting spec as makers did back then when 4wd seemed to tbe the next big thing.

Dad has had one of these since 12 months old. 193bhp!!

Uncommon and only produced in RHD for less than a year before the V70 replaced it. I was hoping it would be worth a bit more than £895, but then again his has covered about one-third the mileage

That Justy looks pretty smart, the ECVT transmissions can be a bit iffy if badly maintained though - I guess if it's survived that long it'll be fine.

Presumably the 60 month car is already 4 years old.Did Vauxhall not strongly advise Cavalier 4x4 owners against using them in 4x4 mode?Don't buy an Impreza. I saw one struggling to get up a mild gradient on tarmac in a light frost. Rally winner my arse.

Pushing the bounds of credibility now

Maybe the prop and back axle will hold it together a bit better in a shunt

Or?

This appears not to have sold on ebay yet - high bid last time £400, but reserve not met.

Oh, come on, what could be more appealing than this?

Good find, pog. Is that in official Gas Board blue?Subaru Legacy could be worth a look, the fuel economy isn't great but if you can find one that hasn't been thrashed they're supposed to be reliable.I'd stay away from anything like the Merc 4x4, Vauxhall 4x4 etc, they're likely to have specialist parts that you won't be able to get without visiting a main dealer and him pulling your pants down. CV joints, clutch, exhaust etc...My Land Rover 109 hasn't put a foot wrong in the couple of months I've had it, but I can quite understand that it's not everyone's cup of T

Have you considered a Lada Niva?Tough, reportedley GR8 etc off road and shite. If there are any in the UK, what about a Soviet UAZ 469? THey have a very good reputation off-road although the company did go through a phase of cars with patchy reliability some years back.My neighbour has to batter up a track to get to the yard he work at, and his old Nexia is well up to the job!!!

Wood and Pickett / Janspeed turbocharged Range Rover is the answer.

How about a Lada Cossack? Or if you want something more car-shaped... Granada Scorpio/Ghia 4x4? I had one years back. Mind you, good luck with finding one!

Buy the Cuore off me and enjoy the rather pointless luxury of fulltime 4WD!

I reckon that Subaru wagon is the best option though, as it is beautiful.

Friend of a friend picked up a low low low mileage Panda 4x4 for about 12 pence recently - needed door bottoms repairing, but otherwise mint 8) (Spawny get :D )

i love the way the rear doors on the dacia dont match or even get close to the rear arches...

The FSO equivalent looks a bit more purposeful, but still with some rear door mismatching issues.

Both look bloody nice - the Subaru and the Cuore. Some one suggested a BX 4x4 - but I want something with a transfer box that doesnt have innards made out of old silver top milkbottle lids.

EDIT - Spied this on Autotrader:

I wonder if the plate is included?
