19 Years of Tin Snail - Back to normality

I don't know where the condensor* is on a 2CV, but it doesn't need to be located there.

On any engine with coil and points ignition, just fit the condensor on / near to the coil, connected to the coil terminal that goes to the points. Earth the body of the condenser really thoroughly.

Electrically this is identical: the function of the condensor is to store the voltage generated in the primary of the coil when the points open and then return that energy into the coil - a brief resonance which is a big part of generating the spark voltage in the coil.

**Condensor is just a Victorian word for Capacitor.

Yup, the wise sages do recommend moving the condenser, as it's entirely out of any airflow where it is - and a sod to change. It's now running on the Velleman kit with points, but without condenser though, so I'm sorted for now.

Thanks for all the battery advice folks, but it does seem to be holding charge for now. A conditioner could be handy given the number of shoddy vehicles I tend to own...

The girl up the road came back with her Morris minor on the back of a flat bed last night, with similar issues I think.

I thought of you, and the fact that you've not had it that bad yet!

That's it. I'm declaring this project officially over!

New coil arrived this morning, and was quickly fitted before I hurtled off for a drive - ignoring a ton of work I need to do. Very pleased to report that she now runs without issue. Beautiful!

Sure, there is still work to do, but there always is with old cars. I need to replace a knackered bleed nipple on the rear brake circuit, and re-adjust the handbrake (too tight one side, not enough the other). I also still need to grab some M6 set screws so I can fit the rear seat. BUT, the fact remains that this car is now back on the road, and trustworthy. I'm very, very happy!

Great news.

Have you done the cavity wax yet?

Ben

No, but I have managed to find it at last! Naturally, it's in the hallway of the house, not the garage I spent ages searching...

Posted

Thta's good. It will be warm.

Get it done before the cavities are filled with road salt.

Ben

Doubt salt will get into the cavities. I can't currently get in them to wax. It means drilling more holes. I don't like drilling holes! I also need some bungs (now ordered) to stop the wax falling out, and salt getting in once I've drilled the holes.

Posted

I usually leave the holes as they are so water can escape - either from condensation or fording rivers. The airflow dries things out, too.

Maybe I'll risk it for a biscuit then. The wax is aerosol based, so they recommend leaving the plugs out for a bit anyway.

I have fond memories when I was a little nipper getting driven around in one of these same colour but with a stripy roof. My mum hates them so that makes me want one even more

Fit the bungs until the wax dries then take them out?

No rush. Doubt she'll be going anywhere for a good few days. There's something else I need to put some miles on.

May you have many thousands of miles Wobbling in your Dolly Ian :)

Is that an MG "Magnette"?

I was in a queue behind one yesterday, it seemed huge viewed from the Honda.

Needs photoing next to a Farina Magnette.....

Nope. It's a GS. This time, they nicked an old name from a different manufacturer.

you arse! "project over!" makes it look like you've killed the fappin car!!! :common007:

Enjoyed that, thanks! It's always good to hear a flat twin, especially the CItroën one. Did the car feel stiffer and handle better now the shell has more structural integrity than a wet cornflake packet? And what are those Monroes like?

Anyway, for the 2cv geeks -

An impromptu timing light can be used by tapping into a side lamp where the connectors meet on the light bar, make sure it's working first! Useful if you're stranded in the middle of nowhere, a spare length of wire can be pinched from the rear foglamp if needed.

A weak coil will fail quicker with little or no fresh air flow, if a grille muff (especially like the one on NUJ) is fitted.

Rear seat locator brackets were originally held in with M6s, it's (I think) the only place they're used.

Posted

Not sure those brackets were M6. I've still got the old bolts welded with rust to the old brackets and they look pretty M7 to me. Will check! At some point.

Can't say she handles any differently at all to be honest. The Monroes are surprisingly good so far. They need to be fitted the opposite way around to Lipmesas. I wonder if that's where folk are going wrong?

i must say after seeing the auld basoon all finished that the grey wheels are not offensive in the least and imho look quite ok- maybe more suited to your buffoonery than white perhaps?

Get back home after a couple of days away, and discover that my 2CV has been getting post.

Contained within were these lovely items.

I reckon I'll be sticking one on the car tomorrow.

And now fitted.

I have a white one for the bootlid too, but I'm not sure what my plans are for the bootlid yet. I still feel the need for an art project. Maybe I'll just do the bootlid rather than the whole car.

Decided to try and free off the rounded brake nipple today. That went well.

Sheared off, but still LHM-tight thankfully. I think I'll change the entire cylinder.

Changing the gearbox oil went better. There was a bit of emulsion in it, suggesting that water had indeed got in when I went to collect the body. Should have done that earlier, but the gearchange is now sweeter, so hopefully all is well. Non-working indicator turned out to be a poor earth. I really did paint those wings too well...

I'm in love with these cars they seem to have a personality.

I've watched your videos and the noise the car makes. Well I could listen to that all day long
