Huge Yank shite bought!

The earlier Galaxies were sold here, they were RHD ones assembled in Canada. This stopped by the mid 1970s though, at one point the importers also bought over Aussie spec LTDs ( a totally different car based on the third generation Aussie Falcon).

I've just looked at the pics in the first post again, and now I'm roughly the colour of the seats.  I can imagine few things more enjoyable than wafting about town in this gorgeous car.  I hope, when it finally arrives, that it's everything you dreamed of.

Apparently so, yes. As I understand it, (and I could easily be wrong) as it's a non EU vehicle type, never normally sold here it has to have the IVA?

Like I say, I could well be way off here. My paperwork from the importers does say it has to have an IVA though.

What makes you think it doesn't have to have one? I'd be interested to know.

I didn't think it would need one either.

Big PDF on gov.uk

In all cases, IVA (whether Basic or Normal) is only required for passenger cars and light goods vehicles less than 10 years old, which require first licensing and registration in the United Kingdom.

As above... pretty sure an IVA only applies to newer stuff.

Its too old for an IVA.

10 years old or less -so yours, being confirmed historic by HMRC, is way too old.

Cheers guys, that's good news then!

Maybe the paperwork I have from the importers is just a standard thing for all cars, if it's new enough it gets one if not it doesn't.

.... you will regret NOT driving around inhaling the fumes from '70s style Dinitrol/Ziebart (anyone got the FREE air freshener, to hang off the mirror)..?

I've payed the importers extra to have it undersealed at the same time as the MOT. Well worth it imho. That should keep it solid on the underside. Once I've got it home it'll be getting stood out in full sun for a day while I pump every seam and cavity with Dynax S50 wax!

I'll do a collection report and pics as soon as I get it home. Can't wait!

Now this thread has more or less come to a conclusion, I thought you might like to see my old Yank.

A 1939 Hudson 2 door Coupe, I rebuilt this from a pile of rubbish and had only finished it one week, when

a Film Producer saw a picture, drove North with a transporter and paid me whatever I asked, on the same

month he bought 24 others similar age for a 35 second Street Scene in his Great Big Movie then flogged them on Fleabay.

That Hudson is lovely! I don't think I could have sold it!

Certainly can't be many of them around either.

I was a member of the Hudson, Essex, Terraplane Club at the time and there were only 2 known to the Club in the UK and 5 worldwide. of this Model.& year.

It was built at the Hudson factory south of London, and the first owner was the owner of "The Bestfolda Pram Company."

Well it's time for another update on this, ITS READY!!

I got the call on Friday that this is finally ready to collect, about time aswell as it's almost a year since I bought it! The registration process went without a hitch, and I now have a nice new V5 for it and a reg number. It's funny reading the V5, where it says engine capacity, it reads 7000cc! Never had one that high before!

Insurance was also all arranged easy enough. Classic car insurance for just under £200 a year.

All being well, I will be going to get it this coming Friday (12th), so if anyone's likely to be on the M25 or A3 on Friday afternoon keep an eye out (and keep well out the way!) it should be an ace road trip and of course a collection thread will follow.

I'll take a gerry can of petrol to get me to the nearest petrol station to avoid dragging shit into the carb (it's probably on fumes at the moment) and a jump starter just incase. Hopefully that should be all that's needed. I did get breakdown recovery with the insurance but hopefully won't be needing it.

I really can't wait to see it for myself, and it has been a slow pain the arse to get to this point but it should be worth it in the end.

Stay tuned for the omgepiccollectionfred...

Breath duly bated!   It looks lovely, I hope you enjoy every inch you drive it.  I know I would!  You wouldn't be able to get the grin off my chops with turps.

This I am very much looking forward to. Hell, I can hardly wait myself!

I will be waiting for the petrol station shots

Oh. It's pronounced mar-kee. I always thought it was mar-kwiss. Now, how do you pronounce Brougham?

Posted

You need to bring it to the Chatham American Car Meeting (first Thurs of the month) - huge turnout last week

Good luck with the collection, you'll feel like a million bucks driving home!

If you want some huge Yank shite, but on a more manageable scale, here's some 1972 stuff in 1:32 scale

I think Brougham is pronounced 'Brooham'.

Totally hypnotic.

It is 'mar-kwiss', just those crazy Yanks predilection for changing pronunciation as well as perfectly good spelling. Brougham is pronounced 'broom'.

Do none of you philistines possess a dictionary?

Posted

Yes, but the man on the advert said Mar-kee so it must be true!

Besides it's an american car so the american pronunciation is correct?

Posted

I've never heard 'marquis' pronounced 'mar-kwiss' - always 'mar-kee', like a posh tent wedding effort.

Isn't a Marquis a title, like a Lord or an Earl or some other olde worlde thing? I can't see them naming a car after a tent with no sides!? Even by yankee standards that's stupid!
