A roller paint job is one step away from the scrapyard isn't it?

Towing eye dangler ? That sounds like something public school mp's pay for in a London specialist gentleman's club.

Never realized this thread was here!

I joined RR Years ago but that said haven't been there for years!

I really got layed into for starting a thread asking why would anybody want to take a perfectly nice car with decent usable paint and poor paint stripper all over it and make it rusty for no other reason than they can?

Followed by being told I was a troublemaker because i questioned all the stupid pop up that come out from the side for instagram,FB,Twitter etc :(

Everybody else likes them its just you was the message i got Innit! i was evil because I don like zimmer frame gear sticks,Ships wheels, slamming and fake rust!

I joined RR thinking it was something that it clearly isn't :(

Maybe it should be changed to WR = Wrecked Rides? RR = Retarded Rides LOL!

I just don't get it,never have never will?

Long Live Autoshite you lot are fuckin ace Innit ;)

I remember those slide out things on RR bloody annoying they were, it wasn't just you complaining.

I went on RR a few weeks ago, read about a guy that bought a Jaguar Xj6, he'd had it a few days then took a saw to the springs, besides looking wank, he went and twatted a speed hump, ripping the sump off the XK. Then he fitted a Diesel engine in it. I just thought what a shame, it has survived 30 years, then some idiot buys it and starts messing about with it. What do I know though...

This is the entire reason why I stopped going there.

No matter the age, condition or rarity every car that gets posted on RR is always followed by the same brain dead comments about how it should be lowered and what engine should be "dropped in".

Sod originality, it's 'worth more' as is any comment against messing with it gets the "it's their/my car they/I can do what I want" and while that's true for now what about the person's that's going to get it after you and would you chop the legs off an antique table just because it's yours?

That's what I always thought when I saw the tossers on top gear killing old cars. Especially the old convertibles and the Dolomite/ princess/ SD1.

Inane comments like 'drop a cossie engin in it' or 'its a shame it's only a 1.3 not a RS Turbo'

Tough one innit, I'd rather see a Mk3 Escort out on the street being used with lowered springs, the "wrong" wheels and whatever than a Mk3 Escort in the scrapyard because an old giffer refused to sell it or someone didn't have the money for a nuts and bolts restoration, or parts are starting to be NLA.

TBH the world would be a boring place if every Mk2 Astra wore dealer plates, original wheeltrims and had the correct routing of the numberplate lamp wiring loom (as per workshop manual V449s/b/1991). It's nice to see originality but it's also nice to see different trends. Brightens the place up still.

I don't think it's about having to have everything original it's just the blanket mentality they have that everything has to be lowered, it has to have a newer bigger engine even if it would make it drive like shit.

I've had it with my Fiesta "shame it's not an XR2" "you want to drop a Zetec in that" do I really.....

yeah, I've never really got it myself either. The first few times I heard "y0 put a Civic/Vauxhall/Formula 1/CAT 797 engine in your Mini" routine, it was kinda funny, but then you realise it's serious, and it stops being funny. I have no issue with stuff like this. I actually think it's pretty impressive in many cases, but I don't like the attitude that any car which has just been left as it is isn't good enough.

(That said, if these swaps save cars from the scrapper, which they quite often do, I'm all for them)

For the record, three lines further down the forum than this thread is JohnK's plan to 2.0t his Mk3 Cav which is full of both win, and positive comments.

I don't think the Cav is destined to be scrapyard fodder if it retained its 1.8 engine.....

Have you noticed there's a really fine line between being devil's advocaat and a wind-up merchant? :D

haha yeah, it's really hard to say anything without contradicting myself. There is a very fine line.

I've been following JohnK's thread, and I'm very interested to see how it turns out, and love the car. I have nothing bad to say about the swaps themselves, and certainly nothing bad about the people who do them. The only thing I object to is the stance that there is nothing to be enjoyed about a car that has just been left as it is.

I'm very much 'live and let live' with most modifying. I like some of it, most of it is perhaps an acquired taste - and some of it is dire.  It does disappoint me though when someone blithely ruins a rare survivor with casual indifference to its irreplaceability.

Yeah, at the end of the day - it's only a car, and the chances are, whatever it was, they made plenty of, what somebody else wants to with it is their choice. Though seeing rare cars end up in the hands of careless owners that destroy them beyond being save able is always frustrating

That said, it's also fine to not like certain modifications or trends, but not to tell other people what they should or shouldn't do to their cars.

I've thought long and hard about this scene thing, and I've decided that, yes, I effing hate the scenesters for their compulsion to ratlook, slam, stance, stickerbomb and rust everything they can get their scrawny, joint rolling little mitts on because....

....I was just as tastelessly immature once, blasting 'my' music at everyone else, not getting how it could be just noise to them, at an irritating volume. Or that the bumper stickers I bought were a massive symbol of my unfettered ego and narrow mindset and were just childish and/or offensive to others.

So I'm going to have to try to ignore them, and give them the wide berth that just about everyone must have been giving me when I was desperate to stamp my mark on the world, achieving only stupidity and tastelessness. I didn't get lamped for it then, so I guess I shouldn't be lamping them for it now.

But that low frequency, almost subsonic rumble you hear when that slammed mk3 Civic or Polo passes by - that's not the car, that's me, still muttering 'Ya little fuckers'

I was one of those twats too, but I modified my cars to go or corner better and occasionally even stop better. I never modified them to make them worse at being a car.

And to think I was some kind of RR Mong for wanting to do the same to the sierra strange that.

My Calibra has been lowered by 25 mm for the last 9 years or so because the original shocks & springs were worn out & OE parts cost much more than an aftermarket lowering kit. By coincidence, however, -25 mm compared to standard is also the correct ride height for the factory DTM V6 Calibra so no kittens are harmed (fuck the nuns).

It also has 16" wheels (OE from a Vectra SRi), which suit the proportions of the car far better than the original 15" ones and allow for a better choice of tyres.

And if all goes according to plan, I'll be fitting my Omega 3.0 engine in a couple of weekends' time, to replace the current OMGHGF'd 2.5 litre X25XE Vectra engine, which replaced the original 2.5 litre C25XE that had become a bit rattly in the tappet department. Whilst being outwardly identical, the 3.0 is rated at 208 bhp rather than the 168 bhp of the 2.5 – so is likely to provide a little more oomph even if some of those horses have escaped over the years.

I don't consider the above modifications to be scene mongage, though.

I don't think it's so much people modifying cars, it's moreover when people do moronic senseless stuff like stretching tyres or putting some device up the exhaust so it sounds like someone having an asthma attack. Similarly can't see why people purposely modify a 10 year old Passat to chuck black smoke out the back, what's that achieve? Other than an MOT fail. I can completely see why someone would fit a cherry bomb exhaust on a Mk2 Fiesta 950, been there and done that.

Where's the line between scene wankers and barrys barried shite?

It must be something other than how much money has been pointlessly spunked on it? Both looks could surely be achieved using nothing but bolloxs from halfords bargain bin

Barried shit is usually a doomed attempt to replicate the horrors of actual scene wanker shit using whatever Barry can buy off the shelf at Halfords or make out of his mum's old MDF cupboards.

Whereas a scene wanker has all the money to do a proper job, and yet carefully selects all the wankiest aspects of the scene and applies them to his vehicle in order 'to be different'. eg. Fits a lowered and/or narrowed front beam which kills the ride at a stroke making driving it anywhere akin to resting your front teeth on a pneumatic drill, Intentionally causes just enough rust to render the vehicle little more than a pile of brown powder within a couple of years and then piles all manner of crap onto a roof-rack thus royally fucking the aerodynamics too.

So that's ride - fucked, vehicle shell - fucked & economy fucked too. Your average practical hatch Golf reduced to a horrible, thirsty, jiggly riding rot box with a ludicrously short life expectancy and no prospect of ever being sold on to another owner.

Plus the owner invariably vapes, has a wanker beard and some ill advised body 'art'. Leave 'em to it though. It's a passing phase.

Good that's them out of the way then. I wish there were more of these 'scene ' heroes
