Secret Life of Machines

Went and did a bit of platelet donating earlier, they let you sit there watching videos on your generic handheld entertainment device. Anyway, a bit of random googling and I've found some TV shows I remember from my childhood.... The Secret Life of Machines

My fav is this one - Tim Hunkin shows us a "brand new" shell which even his mechanic mates can't identify (maybe because there's no handbrake to wedge coins in), flicks two fingers at health and safety, ruins a Mk2 Escort and a Datsun because they were just old rubbish at the time, and drives a chassis around till the radiator throws a wobbly.

Others are available from the same uploader - video recorder, internal combustion engine, sewing machine, washing machine etc.

The internal combustion engine one is absolute genius. They really went at things in an authentic Autoshite manner.

They're the kind of people who you KNOW it's a bad idea to suggest things to.

That's one of my favourite series to watch. The elevator one is similarly autoshite in it's approach. Excellent stuff indeed!

I've just been up to the loft to retrieve my copy of Almost Everything There is to Know.

A friend of mine is a friend of Mr. Hunkin. I hope to meet him one day :)

Went to a lecture held by him years ago. He's an interesting guy.

One recollection from the lecture was from before it started.. there was a flash and a bang from the lecture hall, some very heated language, and then smoke began to drift out from the top of the doorway. Tim came out and apologized that we wouldn't be seeing one particular demonstration as it had exploded prematurely..

My old man bumped into Rex Garrod a few years back. Mentioned I'd loved the series. Rex said he thought everybody would have forgotten about it. It was about that time the videos began to re-surface, and then Tim hosted them all on his site. That was pretty awesome.

I love the cars ones, and another favorite- "This is recorded on stickytape and rust.." from the Video Recorder episode :D

A good use for your crumbling wheelarches!
