MG 3: Good Car or Chinese Tosh?

The sad thing is it's not meant to be all that bad. Not perfect, but OK bordering on good.

But as you say it will depreciate like a brick and how can they sell enough of them with 30 dealers? It doesn't matter how good it is, or how many adverts they put out there this time, if they have 30 dealers they're not going to make much of an impact.

It's a shame.

Interestingly, despite living very near the Longbridge plant and uts "flagship" dealer and having more time on my hands due to lack of work, I've still not been up to the dealers to take a test drive. I really need to get off my arse, take a couple out, take pics and write about them here like I did with MG6.

Oh yeah, whilst watching TV, I actually saw a television advert for the MG3 today. Having this SkyPlus whatever you can skip adverts, but whilst fast forwarding I caught a glimps of the MG logo and had to backtrack. The advert looks a bit 1997 in my opinion, and the cars are way over priced.

I think the pricing is OK actually - they shot themselves in the foor with the MG6 by way overpricing what (I'm told) actually feels like a really cheap car.

On the other hand the "all the bells and whistles" MG3 comes in at just under £10k which wouldnt even get you a povo spec Fiesta with keep fit windows these days.

I think the one convincing trick it has up it's sleeve is its insurgence. It's in the 4E category and the most powerful in class at 105 bhp.

It's a doable semi-hot hatch for yoofs with a bit of cash in their pocket.

So what are the reasons for the epic depreciation? I've always just assumed it was a comination of Rover group stigma, crappy dealer network and people not trusting a Chinese product.

Anything else?

The way I see it:

All of what you say, yet somehow being seen as a start up brand by many, but many don't even know they exist. Bad "contact" points like the keyfob won't help, making people think the '6 was shit before they even got in it and the lack of petrol for so long. For ages you could only get the MG6 with a 1.8 petrol turbo. What non premium big petrol holds it value well now days?

The 3 year / 60,000 mile warranty is a pretty poor offer compared to, say, a Kia or Hyundai - even if you make the brave assumption that they'll still be around in three years time.

What do you mean about the key fob? I don't follow you.

They're not still using the old Rover folding key with separate central locking fob are they? I remember being surprised/amused to find that my ZS came with one of them...

They aspire to still be using an item of such class.

It's this on the 6, it even looks crap in this picture:

The keyfob on my 45 was always the butt of many jokes.

Oh yeah it does look a bit crappy.

Incidentally can anyone tell me why Austin-Rover etc keys folded 90 degress? Always wondered.

I think it was so that the end of the key wouldn't embed itself in your knee in a crash, but just fold over instead.

My Mum knew somebody who got kneecapped by his key when he crashed his Chrysler Alpine. I think I'd rather have a weird key, ta.

Deliveries started in October, I think. How Many Left is up to 2013 Q3 so would just be press fleet and some dealer cars.

Do I get prize for seeing one? Cycled past Bulldog MG in Twyford yesterday and there was one on the forecourt. Wasn't exciting enough for me to stop, mind you

Looks like a Kia. And the Union Jack is a (quite offensive) joke.

No more an insult to our intelligence than the Mini Countryman and Paceman, which are assembled in Austria.

What gets me is that 95% of people have no real idea where their car, or where the major parts of their car comes from.

95% of people don't care. They want an appliance \ VW Golf that's 'a safe place for my money' so that they can trade it in after 3 years for another VW Golf \ appliance on tick.

They don't care where their fridge \ toaster \ washing machine came from, and the same goes for the car.
