Help please with my exciting* day job

For my sins I drill holes in pool balls and flog them to scene people who want an original* gear knob.

The VW people are very nice, but what annoys are the MG / Rover people who think buying the 'threaded to your specification' item means you say "MG ZR mate!" and then get all pissy when you tell them to read the description, the bit that says I need the thread specs, not the car model.

I'm yet to get one of these mongs to actually tell me something useful. So, er, does anyone happen to know the threads for late MG or Rover cars? Unfortunately the only old school scrapyard doesn't have anything that new. I need to expand to more modern cars, as sales for the citroen bx appear to be drying up :)

zr knobs - just refuse to sell them one

Don't know the thread size, but I do know that some ZRs have push-on gearknobs rather than threaded.

One size fits all. Drill to 20mm. Include roll of gaffer tape to wrap top of gear stick to 20mm thickness. Press on firmly with soft hammer.

Just dont forget to give them instructions with a diagram to show them which way up it goes.......

Don't tap the hole and include a tube of araldite rapid (factored into the price of course) Voila, guaranteed fit :-)

Yes, I realise that was no help at all. Probably best go with the rimmer bros idea.

Knowing MG Rover, they are probably old stock ADO16 gear sticks with an imperial thread.

I tried that with a ball I acquired from the Hospital Social Club (shortly after it burned down) - drilled it and it was full of powder :-?

God I remember out hospital social club. I lived opposite it in the nurses home so it was quite convenient really. Said hospital is a mixture of gated community and low cost social housing. I would never wish to live in a former hospital thank you very much (although it was mega-fun when I was a student nurse hehehehe).

Our nurses digs were upstairs from the social club so great for availing ourself of the 21p/pint mild beer and trying to get pished with the porters. The doctors had their own mess and never ventured over the road to be with the rest of us.

The best thing about living in the hospital? Getting out of bed at 07.15 and still being on time for an early shift handover.

No joy with the pdf's, but at least now I know the threads for some shonky triumphs if people ever ask for them. So ta.

And now a really exciting* offer:

If anyone wants a pool ball gear knob for a car I don't currently do
and there's more than 100 of them on howmanyleft
and you're capable of measuring threads & taking a photo

then pm me for a 'swap item for information' deal. Don't all rush at once :)

I got a 'luxury wood' gear knob yonks ago for my folks automatic mini, looked like it was off a jag. It was one size fits all with the hole lined with a medium hard rubber compound that you forced down on the stick and screwed on. Looked much better than the shite black plastic one that broke, it was varnished wood and black leather. Classy.

I think for a lot of the push on ones, you could look at getting the size of the gearstick and then keep in a range of different sized nylon inserts to suit.
