ALMOST! Extinct Cars

Metropolitans are ace.  I'm surprised I've never seen one painted tricolour and rebadged as a Neopolitan.

I'm sure a Metropolitan is a hateful little thing to own.  But I rather like hateful cars, it's a big part of the reason I'm here.

I think the Met is a love it/hate it thing. I always saw it as a 1950s Nissan Figaro from the photographs. Then I saw a real one and have to say that I found it totally different from what it looks like on photos. It's quite a dapper little thing.

I saw a SC100 quite recently. Looked rough though.

Black one in Rusholme? Know where it lives, near my college. Not sure if it actually moves or not.

The bit that makes me laugh most about this thread is that there's more often than not at least one example of most of the shite listed owned by folk on here.

Nigel B probably owns the set, other than the Lonsdale..

I have no strong feelings towards Metropolitans. If I don't survive, tell my wife I said 'hello'.

Beige alert!

My brother saved a Datsun 100A FII four door saloon with Janspeed stuff under the bonnet and he loved it to bits.  That is, until his friends* trashed it comprehensively while he was away and he couldn't replace the interior parts they ruined.  I think that must have been mid-late 90s and parts were difficult to get for them then, I dread to think what it's like now.

On the subject of the Kia Pride, I can vividly remember an acquaintance of mine having one of these, complete with the ghastly white wall tyres. Loaded up with 5 of us, I often pondered whether if we crashed the ensuing emergency services would just bury us all in it, given its lack of strength in an accident.

Very few and far between, (ahem cough, sorry cant help myself but)! Samba S owns a couple, as does another forum member, but there certainly isn't many rallye's left.

what is it?

The Amphicar was a 1960's German idea for a vehicle that could also be used on water. The builders probably, being car people, didn't realise what salt water does to thin sheet steel and ventilated box sections. So they are as rare as hens teeth in a haystack but this one is currently for sale on Car and Classic. Most are either in the USA or Germany. The only one I can remember seeing was a German plated one at a Spanish holiday resort. Does anyone know if there are any in the UK?

Very cool indeed!

They do exist in the UK: here's a geezer with a RHD one driving into the river Avon:

There's information about them on amphicars.com including some great stories (diabetic kid with no insulin, stuck in a big flood in Tewkesbury - amphicar to the rescue!). That website also has a for sale page with some UK-based amphicar up for grabs for loadsamoney.
