Vauxhall Corsa Worth A Punt?

The Corsa was reliable, simple and economical until they started using multi-valve engines or the chain driven ones.  They were always cheap and still are compared to other small cars (which as we all know, hold their value very well.)

I wish I could be fairer to VW but the only reason they have a reputation as being decent cars is due to the 80s/90s models.  Everything since is overrated, overpriced and unreliable.  They're trading off their reputation and some very useful government hand outs...

The public are starting to see sense though, mainly due to the detonating 2.0 diesels and the problems I mentioned above on the smaller models.  I'll give you one thing though, they're still pretty good for rust resistance.  But that's not much use when the car is immobilised due to yet another duff cv joint/ wheel bearing/ injector/ oil pump etc etc.  They are becoming a joke in the trade.

The DSG boxes are rubbish. That’s why VAG are loosing the taxi trade.

VW do seem to prepare their cars for the future better

See mk3 and mk4 golf for many a rusted VW. When even the french can make cars that dont rust.

Plus I agree with Rusty_Rocket most modernish Vw's are a money pit waiting to happen, electric handbrake knackered on my mates passat, that will be fifty trillion thanks mate.

That corsa has got to be worth it if you can turn it around quickly and do it all pretty easily.

Was that sarcasm? Corsas are complete wank, and always have been.

An opinion you and countless others have and are entitled to. Just please don't try and tell me Polos are any better because they aren't. Not by a long chalk. In actual fact, barring the (original) Ford Ka, the Polo is probably the worse small car out there.

The Ka was a great idea-I’ve never sampled one so I can’t comment on what’s it’s actually like. VW make small cars well. But bigger, complicated stuff like the Pisshat just is a big no-no. The electric handbrakes do go, and go often. The DSG is great fun to use, and then it breaks.

So yeah, big VWs are crap.

I am really surprised to read that but I don't have any experience with modern VW's or any Corsa come to that so I respect your opinion, but I know VW suffer in the annual reliability tables these days! My last VW was a 1999 mk4 golf Gti Turbo, solid reliable car and fookin fast with 155k clocked up. The modern VW range doesn't inspire me though, a colleagues new mk6 broke down and overheated in London last year!! I mean FFS its a year old car!!

Corsas are complete wank

Anyone who had a fiver on "Page 2", please come to the desk to collect your winnings.

VW's are allowed to eat their water pumps. window regulators drop to bits, 'boxes and heads fail, bushes go all the time etc.

'Common faults' innit.

the ashtrays are ALWAYS fucking up on these Corsas, THEY ARE SHIT i wouldn't drive even one if Lisa Scott-Lee out of Steps offered to sleep with me in exchange for driving hers down to the weighbridge for her.

They get punctures too. My Polo never had a puncture.

See, we can disagree without killing each other though.

Ah, but Corsas get them too.

I have never had a Corsa (well, had a Corsa A), nor a Polo.

The puncture story was something my sister used to justify getting rid of her 'old' 11 reg Clio. It seemed to be the straw that broke the camels back.

All it had asked for was regular servicing.

I never attempted to talk her out of it though. I told her she shouldn't have bought the thing initially.

Did she hit with a stick, a la Basil Fawlty?

“I’ve laid it on the line to you time and time again!"

I can't comment on up to date ones, but a relative of mine had a P-reg Polo from new and it was the rustiest, most disintegrating before your eyes contraption I've known. Unreliable as well.

Obviously Cavette is still wrong though.

Ah I can’t comment for that vintage, I’m talking slightly newer.

Well I'm going to go ahead with this as I've managed to enlist the help of a mechanic mate of mine, who incidentally says he's just done this exact job on another.

The car has no insurance, or VED but my insurance allows me to drive it, inspite of there being no insurance policy out on the car. I'm just getting them to confirm that to me in writing (again) for the inevitable pull by Mr Plod.

The no VED bit I will overcome by booking it in for MOT back home, although it has 3 months MOT left it will sell better with 12, plus I'll get a better idea of its condition AND most important they will diagnose the clunk/ loose engine bed feel for me. Engine mounts are feking expensive pray to God it's not one of them.. It has one new bottom arm already, so if the other side is  causing the problem cheap fix. Sway bar/ ARB bushes are cheap too.

Just been offered this for £60.. had the MOT not ran out on the 2nd I'd have drove it straight home. Receipts for recent head gasket, runs fine. What could go wrong, already been offered £120 for scrap, I think I'll sell the engine and weigh in the rest

Just wait a few weeks till I finally fire mine up and discover that its fucked, i'll be in touch then

Cheap bits if anyone needs owt speak up.

Going to scrapyard ASAP.

My advisories on mg were exhaust (this has new one) Petrol tank has big dent (this has decent one)

£60 fell on feet really.

4 alloys with 4 brand new tyres, sadly one is flat beyond repair and the same tyre is bald on edge.

Engine should do £150 on flea bay once I fire it up. They drained petrol by cutting feed pipe from filler neck, totally dry so i'm just in proceeds of taking tank off between showers and will tip petrol straight in the top and she should start.

Mines all back in one piece now, but won't start due to some nonsense with the immobiliser, i've got the EKA code to override it but the drivers door lock doesnt work properly so i can't put it in. Also its got an after market alarm on it which i think is probably the root of the problem (and which keeps on going off like all aftermarket alarms). Basically i am a bit f**king sick of it TBH.

Posted

My MG's alarm is fecking angry and I cant always remember how to keep it happy.

Well I got the Rover going, it sounds fine, very nice infact with that airfilter. I'll up the vids to youtube then probably advertise it on ebay... should have engine out in next couple of days. Weather dependant.

How did Rover get away with selling those for so long? Oh, they didn't....

Posted

As this has been bumped after three weeks of drift...

Do you still have this Rover, Edd, or has it gone?

Posted

Gone straight to my mates yard.... with the 206.

The Corsa is sat outside, flew straight through an MOT. Will be getting the timing chain done soon then it will be four sail.
