Frigging car insurance... Anybody know any cheap deals out there?

It's time to insure the Xantia, however i've been getting quotes of nearly £500 TPFT which quite a bit more than the Saab 9-5 2.3 turbo I had before, even though the Xantia is in a lower insurance group. For £500 I could probably get traders insurance and drive what I like!

I think the issue is that the Xantia was originally registered in Northern Ireland and so may be classed as an import, or something.

I've tried the usual suspects like Confuseacat.com and compare the meershat.com e.t.c but they all seem to be around the same mark.

Anybody got any ideas on how I can get my insurance sorted cheaper?

It shouldn't be an import Tim as N.I is part of the UK. I've only got a traders policy but they're really cheap and can post or send details of the company if wanted.

Always had a block policy with NFU For all my shite until this year, now got the disco with Adrian flux, cally with esure and S3 with Lancaster - costs me £400 a year for all

I know it's always different for everybody and i've no idea about the NI factor. But the best deal I've had on modern for last 3 years has been from Chaucer Direct - so may be worth giving them a try if you haven't already.

Add an inoffensive spouse as a second driver. Whether this person will actually ever drive your car of not, simply stating that you have a Missus and she might drive at some point often brings the premium down for some strange reason.

Also check you are describing your employment in the cheapest way possible - use this tool

Don't go for TPF&T, Comprehensive is generally cheaper for "grown-ups". I think they assume there must be something wrong with you if you don't want Comprehensive.

Citroens do seem to be on the dear side to insure. Mine went up quite a bit when I changed from the Volvo to the C5, although I have my renewal notice here and it's under £250. Insurance groups don't seem to mean anything any more.

I'm 33 so don't qualify for Saga, good idea though! I've juggled third party only, fully comp and TPFT and in this case TPFT seems to be the cheapest although on many other cars fully comp works out cheaper.

If you could send the details for the traders policy over to me Cavette that would be great. I quit my job the other day and i'm actually going to be working in the motor trade, so a traders policy would be acceptable without bending the truth!

I'd be surprised if you could go much lower than £500. My cheapest quotes (31 with 6 years' NCD, no points etc) for modern policies seem to start at about £650 for anything bigger than a Seicento, but a couple of things I've found is that sometimes there 's a comprehensive policy with a daft excess (like £1000) which works out cheaper than your normal TPFT, plus you can also play around with 'where the car is normally kept'- I have come across policies who are cheaper if you park on road than on the drive.

If you can't get classic insurance, a motor trader policy seems like the most sensible solution.

I was being quoted over £800 fully comp on a fuggin micra

that was 52 yrs old with 12yrs NCB...  tried the other half's insurers who only prefer to do TPFT and it was roughly the same.

so ended up insuring it @ my brothers address which knocked £420 off the price.

Christ on a stick, what engine has it got? A bloody V8? The MGF costs me just over £200 FC and I'm in North London.

i'm only £280 a year  fully comp on my Saab  9-3 2.0 Turbo with 1st Central.  I'm 33 and had 5 points at the time of taking out the policy - although they are now gone, so I'd agree something is pushing your policy up.

I work in radio and that is almost always used as an excuse by insurers to massively inflate your policy - I asked why at one point and was told "Well, you might have Britney Spears in your car"

FFS its local FM. I hardly think britney will be troubling my back seat any time soon

I have an Admiral multicar policy for the modern driveway ornaments.

I've put down HGV driver as my job, no points, licence since '97, full NCD... I should be a perfect proposal for them.

Tried a few other Xantias and they all seem to come out at the same price. Why do they cost so much to insure??

Maxpower, where do you live in London? I pay £200.00 a year in London for a Fiat 500?

I used to have the same problem back in the day when I was a journo. I managed to get a policy (Admiral I think) that specified 'journalist not sports/showbiz' as my occupation. Madonna was right narked when I couldn't give her a lift to the station in the 416.

I know what you mean. I was told I might run Madonna down on set. Yet on the two occasions I had the chance to I managed to control myself. Only just mind.......

Yeah. I had to tell the Insurance they were being ridiculous. There's no way I'd be giving Britney a lift - I already had Jon Bon Jovi, Paul McCartney, Elton John and Madonna in the cortina so there was no room for anyone else.

I'm with LV, costs £330 for a 4 year old Kia Rio with full business use for me and SD&P for my wife - it adds about £200 if I want full business for the other half because of her job. You can also increase you're excess to bring your quote down.

Saga, Porsche 944 - £156 comp £250 xs

Any help?

I'm too youthful for SAGA I;m afraid. I've been playing around with addresses and I think it's our area that's suddenly pushing prices up/

No, Stoke on Trent. My inlaws live a couple of miles down the road and the quotes are £200 cheaper... humm....
