Can't live, if living is without you.

And a manuel gearbox. I don’t get on with autos.

Rwd, without it I think I would cease to exist

Radio with either tape or AUX IN.

Comfy seats.

Three doors.

Brown/green/beige/dark interior.

Velour.

Good heater/blower.

Non crunchy gearbox.

I can't stomach blue/grey interiors, blackpool illuminations CD players, and those hard leather seats (like in a mk3 Mondeo Ghia).

Mrs fordperv says she wouldn't be able to live without the Turbo on her escort

Someone's gotta say it..............

A steering wheel

I actually expected this from Messerschmittowner.

Heated mirrors on my Transit would be a bonus, it's all you've got so when it's raining and they are covered in spray it's a bit of a pisser to see anyone at all.

Veg oil. I really would struggle to run a car daily that didn't accept this as fuel.

What is your automobile essential item?

Essential: Aircon - but then I live in Abu Dhabi so it's a reasonable requirement :)

Non-essentials:  Electric seats - I'm the only one who drives my car so the seat never needs adjusting.  Needless additional complexity and unnecessary weight

As an old AROnline man, I didn't expect to hear that from the inventor of the world famous and much envied Moss Tech enhanced electric seat control system!

A little sunvisor behind the rear view mirror, and pull-out adjustable steering wheel!

And doorcards from a pug 206, can fit a large mcdonalds cup in with no problem, and it stays rock solid

I can do without most stuff. 99% of the 'toys' in new cars just annoy me or confuse me at inapproprite times. I think a heater is the only thing I struggle without and finding a way to adapt the original heater in my Anglia to fit round my modifications transformed the useability of it.

I like power steering but I kind of wish I'd never experienced it because before I had I'd never thought about it. :-?

Two for me - I agree with Volksanyl, three point seatbelts are close-on a must. I have driven cars without them but I don't like the feeling. Oh and automatic transmission. I hate to change gear myself and haven't for so long now I'm not confident about doing it again. I pretty much used to drive around in third gear anyway - third is a very useful, flexible gear.

A heated rear window is a must.

Probably slightly embarrassing this one, but modern cars have become so heavy that I really wouldn’t fancy owning anything from around the turn of the century without power steering.

As already mentioned, central locking on a car which has four/five doors. Wouldn’t be bothered if it was a two/three door.

A five speed (or more) gearbox. In this day and age with faster moving traffic, a faint possibility of an 80mph motorway limit and fuel prices ever spiralling out of control, I don’t think I could go back to having only four forward gears on a daily driver.

Whilst I could live without intermittent windscreen wipers, but it would be a real pain in the backside.

Anything else I’m not that fussed about, really.

Actually that's a good call, and one I'd forgotten about. Not strictly necessary, but living in the world capital of light drizzle (Glasgow) not having either an intermittent or even a flick-wipe facility is a right PITA. The only car I think I've ever owned without either was the old Amazon, and having a much more vertical screen than modern cars have, it wasn't too distracting driving it with a few rain spots on it.

Just thought of another thing the Amazon didn't have which was cabin storage space.

There was a very small shelf under the passenger side of the dash but that was it. No bins, no door pockets, no central console, nothing. Anything that wouldn't go in my coat pocket went on the floor or the passenger seat, which being flat slippery 60s vinyl meant that whatever you put on it would end up on the floor soon enough. :)

Rear screen wipers. Transition from hatchback or estate to saloon is always horrible when you're used to a rear wiper. Unless it's my hatchback of course where the rear wiper only ever works when it feels like it anyhow.
