Wilko220 Posted May 27, 2013 Posted May 27, 2013 If I wanted to get a vinyl roof put on my car, is there anywhere that still does it?Can anyone recommend such a place?I'm very much getting there with the bodywork resto on my Sceptre, so it's something I need to start thinking about...
brickwall Posted May 27, 2013 Posted May 27, 2013 There are a few DIY kits around. You really need an extra pair of hands, so perhaps get a DIY kit and get a place local? It's years since I have seen it done.
warren t claim Posted May 27, 2013 Posted May 27, 2013 We need to see these come back into fashion. Partridge 1
TagoraSX Posted May 27, 2013 Posted May 27, 2013 East Kent Trim sell the kits, I will be leaving it to the professionals to put mine on when the time comes.
trigger Posted May 27, 2013 Posted May 27, 2013 I was chatting about fitting vinyl roofs with a guy recently who had one on his Cortina Estate, long and short of it was NEVER attempt fitting one yourself, I wasn't aware of how crap they were to fit!
oldford Posted May 28, 2013 Posted May 28, 2013 We've got a company at work who fit vinyl roofs, they've had loads of experience with them.
Wilko220 Posted May 28, 2013 Author Posted May 28, 2013 Thanks guys.Oldford and tagorasx - if you can let me know who these professionals you use / know of are, that would be really useful...
Madman Of The People Posted May 31, 2013 Posted May 31, 2013 The OAP crowd in Florida still likes them. Ship the car over and make a holiday of it!
Shep Shepherd Posted May 31, 2013 Posted May 31, 2013 IIRC, Brian Johnson owned a vinyl roof and sunroof installation business before he joined AC/DC. I wonder if he still keeps his hand in? Also, Father Shepherd and his best mate Alex fitted a vinyl roof to his newly-acquired 1977 Avenger in 1981. He said it wasn't a job that he'd want to attempt again
vulgalour Posted May 31, 2013 Posted May 31, 2013 With advances in paint technology, I'm surprised there isn't some sort of textured paint you could apply instead, that's got to be the better option, surely.
PhilA Posted May 31, 2013 Posted May 31, 2013 With advances in paint technology, I'm surprised there isn't some sort of textured paint you could apply instead, that's got to be the better option, surely. The suitably shite answer would be Artex. --Phil Wilko220 1
Pete-M Posted June 1, 2013 Posted June 1, 2013 This one cost me around £100 for the vinyl roof and a new headlining. That was in about '96 though.
andrew e Posted June 1, 2013 Posted June 1, 2013 Wilko have you tried the black cab trade for a roof?
Wilko220 Posted October 30, 2013 Author Posted October 30, 2013 Since we have a few new members on here in the last few months, I thought I'd give this question a bump. I did act on Andrew E's suggestion above by doing some Google searching and asking around, but couldn't find anything. So, anyone know who might be able to fit me a vinyl roof? The idea is to turn this: into something more like this: (minus the old women, obv. I'm just not into that).
Junkman Posted October 30, 2013 Posted October 30, 2013 Fitting vinyl to a roof so it doesn't look like a total spaz did it, is the work for someone who killed his parents. And the preacherman, a nun and sixteen kittens.Do not even think about attmpting it DIY, you will make a mess of it, yourself, and your driveway. Exception: Rover P6.The simple reason: It doesn't have seams that need to be 100% straight, and you can do it with the roof off the car. Still takes 4 people, a D16 sized hot air gun, and a lot of cursing, swearing and beer. I don't understand to this day how they were able to fit them to millions of cars in the factories without stopping the assembly line for two days per roof.

Partridge Posted October 31, 2013 Posted October 31, 2013 It can't be that hard. Can it?Roughly, where are you based Wilko? I'd give you an extra hand if you can trust me not to draw a cock on you Humber.
Mr_Bo11ox Posted October 31, 2013 Posted October 31, 2013 Be ace to gat a vinyl roof fitted on a brand new car, maybe a 5-series or something Wilko220 1

oman5 Posted October 31, 2013 Posted October 31, 2013 I replaced the one on my mk3 cortina myself. it wasn't too bad a job, but it helps if its a hot day to make the vinyl more pliable. and much easier with two people, the glue is so sticky there is not much margin for error
Joey spud Posted October 31, 2013 Posted October 31, 2013 I did replace one on my Manta B (MOY136P where are you now) and it wasn't too bad.If you mark the centre line of the car (masking tape) and the centre of the vinyl (chalk) and pick a hot day its quite straight forward.

I'd give you an extra hand if you can trust me not to draw a cock on you Humber. Thanks for the offer, AP - but as much as (I think) I trust you not to draw a cock on it, I'm not quite sure I'm ready to risk an amateur job (ie one involving me) in this case just yet!I'm in Herts.
barefoot Posted October 31, 2013 Posted October 31, 2013 There's a place here in Castle Donington called Smart Tops. They used to do vinyl roofs and sunroofs. They seem to do more painting now but presumably the skills are still there. 01332 811776 Wilko220 1
NorfolkNWeigh Posted October 31, 2013 Posted October 31, 2013 Until you posted the Sceptre pics I was imagining a Rover 75 with a vinyl roof, something that Rover probably thought about before letting Peter Stevens paint everything yellow, much more in keeping. warren t claim 1
Partridge Posted October 31, 2013 Posted October 31, 2013 Thanks for the offer, AP - but as much as (I think) I trust you not to draw a cock on it, I'm not quite sure I'm ready to risk an amateur job (ie one involving me) in this case just yet!I'm in Herts.I could draw a cock on the underside of the vinyl roof-like a builder writing on brickwork before it's plastered up?You are very welcome. But in Herts you be Northern to me, so I don't think "I'm going out for the day to glue a vinyl roof on a Humber Sceptre" would go down well anyway. But don't two amateurs make a professional?
Felly Magic Posted October 31, 2013 Posted October 31, 2013 Aldrige Trimming in Brum probably do vinyl lids as well Wilko220 1
