Hey folks :) Got it in my head last night that im gonna paint the camper either nato green / olive drab for my summertime shenanigans!

P7IIA88.jpg

Looking to handpaint as have neither the money nor the skills to do a good enough spray job,and i like the van to look a bit scruffy!

im thinking five litres but am vastly inexperienced in any kind of painting, that said i did use a big can of white road marking spray to hide the rust a couple weeks ago.

Anyone know where to get said paint at knockdown prices? or have any experience / ideas / hints they can throw in my direction? anything is greatly appreciated :)

The bloke that owned the Green Cross Garage where I did my work experience, had one of these in camper flavour that he painted this nasty shade of Vauxhall green in the late 1990s.

It looked bad enough on my old Cavalier estate that I had at the time, but on a Renault Master It looked utter shite. Nato/olive green will just not suit this old bus at all.

It is your bus obviously, but if it was mine, I would keep it white. If you feel that you really must change the colour, Renault vans of this era came in a nice shade of Autoshite beige.

Funnily enough, when I worked in the MoD disposals game about 10 years ago, we actually had a few of these come through painted in NATO green..... As I remember we had to respray them white just to get people to even think about buying them :)

If you REALLY must do it, cant you go for something a bit bolder.

If its going to be turned into mega shite from just the usual humdrum shite then maybe you need to think out of the box and not like the sheep or summat.

Many years ago, when i used to refurbish Forklift trucks we used to do an Alert Orange paint scheme and gloss black the rims.

They looked fuggin rock and you could see the fuckers a mile off.

Maybe a satin/matt orange and gloss black rims would have the serious shite credentials.

Drab greens are so, erm, 2010.

Edit: Thinking about it, IF you were so bold as to go for it, you would have to have a few signs made up to stick on the van such as " No we are NOT the fucking AA" just incase there was any confusion.

Nasty? That's Reed green and it's UBER cool! I had a Mk1 Astra in that colour and thought it looked brilliant.

Thanks for the replies folks, it may seem that im following the 'sheep' but i spent a few years in the military and the colour, as drab as it is, is one iv always liked! Iwas gonna camo it :) i dont want to keep it white as (nearly) every other camper in the world nowadays is also white, id like it to stand out a bit... more than it does... Orange with black wheels however... intruiging! Actually the more i think of it the more i like it! as i said itll be a handpainted job with a roller or the like. Can anyone tell me whether 5ltr will be enough? Best way to prep the paint ect? Cheers

On a serious note fella I hope you're planning on keeping it forever, as by 'camo-ing' the paint you're probably going to make the camper worth about 1/3rd (or less) of it's value and it will be a bastard to sell on.

Posted

True. Doing this will probably put the value into negative figures, but it's yours so it's your choice.

Posted

Enough negativity! Slap paint on it, go have fun. That VW site suggests 5ltrs should be enough if you're careful.

I'd go for a pale blue personally, camo is a bit depressing.

if yo ass is thankin bout paintin it green, it might not look straight-up good. Here is Volksyz one I put on yo' Wuz crackalackin' thread a while ago. Well shiiiit, it looked like shit, smelt like shit, smoked like shit, dat shiznit was shit.

I can't see nato green being any more interesting than the current scabby white. If I were you, I'd be getting some satin black paint, a roller and a tonne of masking tape. You'd end up with something genuinely interesting and you'd only need half the paint and it'd be a lot of fun. Not to mention making everyone's eyes hurt.

This looks to be about the same shape and size as your van. Dazzle camouflage is the way forward, it's historically obscure and effective in a totally cheap-ass way.

This van will die in my hands, one way or 't other

That green one dont look to hot, and the olive drab above is worse. i may have to have a rethink, plenty of time for that tho as i got a LOT of sanding down to be done :)

Haha, one step ahead ^^

nice one :) did you use a brush / spray or roller?

Posted

I used a big brush,I painted the whole car with 2 coats of green before putting the black on,so the paint goes quite a long way :)

How long was that Granada on the road after you painted it? I see camo/matt black as the kiss of death for most motors.

Can I sling a TOP TIP in? I have painted one daily, and three crazzee non-charidyeee banger rally carz. The top tip to a hand paint finish is primer - any primer. Either household rollered on, or half a dozen rattle cans from a pound shop. For best results scotchbrite/green scourer the whole body, mask the details (string under window rubbers lifts them) and then tack rag, or thinners (£6.99 small bottle from halfords) the body. Do not use white spirt or similar for this or the paint will fall off. Plenty of primer round fuel fillers too. Then gloss the top (Dulux is best, really :D ) by cutting in the edges with an inch wide brush, then foam rad roller (4 inch) the rest.

Leave a few days, soaking wet 'wet and dry' if neccesary any runs whatever. Then give a good polish a few days later. You get the below (in fetching livery Italian job fans).

Nice one andrew, well appreciated :) was thinking about green scourers earlier :)

I love reading about these mingebag painting techniques, thanks for that Andrew.

I looked on the Dulux website for gloss, and the only one I can find is called "Dulux Once Gloss".

http://www.dulux.co.uk/products/once-gloss/

Looks good for the job, there's a dull green, a mid brown, and half a dozen different beiges. That's it. Perfect!

About the Master, a neighbour has this one, called Trevor:

Love the AS racing stripes and brown tweedy seats.

He was rotten as a pear, so he's away having some new steel zipped in, and a full re-spray, (as mentioned before) in a light blue, something like this:

Have a couple more for inspiration:

Just seen, these two are in the RIGHT colours, and come emblazoned with the AS moniker!

Didn't know I'd spotted so many. Should start a thread.
