+1 on the Cavalier with the Ecotec - my mate had a N-plate with a 2.0 Ecotec fitted.

This was a press Vectra, again with the 'DUR' registration...

Me and a work colleague always sniff out vectras, can be some bargains to be had with them! I do have a soft spot for them, despite what omgclarkson says

It's probably due to disappointment more than anything else, because the Vectra was slightly worse in many respects than the excellent Cavalier that it replaced.

How so? Having driven the Vectra and Cavalier I can't say I agree. The Cavalier, whilst indeed an excellent car felt quite dated and agricultural compared to the Vectra which, imo felt fresher and more up to date. In fact the Vectra felt better built and more comfortable than the equivalent Mondeo. I suppose Vauxhall/GM did err on the side of caution, but then so did a lot of manufacturers.

I don't agree on the seats either, as I said, the ones I've driven felt Ok, never really took much notice but it did feel comfortable enough.

The Vectra B is plysically larger and weighs more, but is offered with the same range of engine sizes (and approximate power outputs) as the Cav. Plus, I've owned both a Cav and Vectra... subjectively, I found the Vectra to be a ponderous, wooden heap of lard in comparison with the brisker, more responsive Cav.

I have to ask - what are you doing on Autoshite if you like cars to be "fresh" and "up to date"??

Mixed opinions. Paid good money for a W reg SRi 140 in 2007 - converted to lpg. Half leather seats etc. mega economy, comfy and fast although the handling seemed really wallowy compared to the calibra i'd been driving before. Head gasket went only a couple of months into my ownership and cost £450 to repair. The next day a wiring fault caused it to disappear in a sea of flames on my way to work and that was that.

Didn't touch another until a couple of years ago when I was out of a gig and was offered a months work 100 miles away... that *might* lead to a full time job (it did) Faced with a daily 200 mile commute I bought the first sub-£500 diesel i could find that would run on veg.. this..

1.7TD , 225k on the clock, soul destroyingly dull and absolutely knackered in many ways. the drivers seat was broken and propped up with a 20 litre veg oil drum jammed behind it. It did the months commute with no great issue running on 100% veg oil straight from makro at 90p a litre....though it lost fifth gear. Kept driving it till 4th gear expired as well, and faced with only three working forward gears, I weighed it in.

That murky ming shite colour has to be the one.

I always thought they were pretty poor compared to the Mondeo. Especially the drive.

Uk launch was October 1995, this one on autotrader (lacking a photo) was registered the following month...

Got to be one of the earliest remaining, '1 owner from new full vauxhall service history 55K immaculate' sounds promising at least!

Plus its an auto which was on your list of boxes to be ticked

Knowing that you like your V6's I recommend you try a V6 engined Vectra. Lovely engine, almost as good as the froggy V6 and the SRi model which I had was fine to drive, albeit slightly lacking in steering feel compared to the 406.

The V6 was available in earliest Vectras (GLS and CD trims if I remember correctly) although didn't become available in SRi trim until the 1997 model year

Well in my long and so far fruitless search i've seen loadsa buckets for far too much coin for The Bank of Croker. Well i've got over the fact that "Lauren" insisted on a new living room carpet so the search is back on!! Anyway what i would like to know is if the early 1996 N plate 1700 diesel will run on veggie oil and what mods i may need to carry out to make it run reliably on it? It will be doing around 20.000 miles a year.

I've seen one with 200.000 miles on for 250......no test but i think it might be worth a gamble.

Any info will be greatfully recieved.

See my story above - the early TD runs happily on veg oil. I gave mine nothing else in the 10000 miles I ran it with no issues. 100% fresh veg straight from a makro drum.

This is the one for £250. Thanks for the info on the veggie. This one is miles away in Manchester (i'm in Edinburgh) so i'm maybe gonna struggle getting it up here. I'm thinking insure it and take the gamble......gonna have to think of a way.lol.
