Bear in mind there are 2 types of 1.7TD engine (Isuzu and Vauxhall IIRC) and you need to get the correct one for veg friendliness, although I can't remember which one that is. USEFUL.

Elk's is the Izuzu lump so presumably this is the one you want. Mk3 cav dizzler is a pretty good shout actually, getting rare enough to be an unusual sight, relaxing and more or less hassle-free to own and not (totally) spirit-crushingly dull. I just can't come round to the idea of a Mk3 Astra being 'good' yet though, sorry GC!

Alternatively, there was a 1.1 mega late (polo-engined) Trabant 601 Universal converted to run on LPG for sale last year, that has to be the ULTIM8 mingebag experience! It was cheap too, £600 or summat like that.

biggest fun part of owning a dizzler that takes Veg is the conversations you have in tesco's as you buy another 50 litres of veg oil.

As the number of cars that can run on veg is dropping, I think it's quite a rare occurrence now to have people like us buy oil in quantity.

Have 200 litres stockpiled now at 90p a litre.

Snot a million miles away from you, too.

Hi guys,

This has made good reading but can you please indulge me ( I'm an idiot with the mechanical knowledge of a dead slug!)? Why do you have to mix the veg oil/used sump oil etc with the diesel? Can't you just pour in 'neat' veg oil? Sorry for asking a stupid question!

You can run some cars on neat veg, and I did run the boring on nothing but veg for a few weeks last summer.

This time of year though it is advisable to dilute veg as it can get rather thick and gloopy in the cold. Adding petrol effectively thins veg oil, I'm unsure on the percentage of petrol to use, but personally I just run the car on 50/50 veg and diesel in the colder months.

I did add 5% petrol to the veg for a tank or so last summer, but the car ran better on the neat veg so I stopped with the petrol.

That Tipo is a super little bus. Sadly, despite being not too far away as the crow flies, Waterlooville is just about the furthest away you can possibly get (apart from Norfolk of course) in terms of how much of a faf it is to actually get to from Devon.

Other, more local motors I am going to have a ring round about include:

This lightly dented, horrifically green pug - assuming it has the rarer Bosch pump:

This minge magnet Rover 400:

This miserable as a damp day in Hull Golf:

Finally this honest sounding, earlier - and I think better looking - 1-oh-sex; once again assuming the pump is bish bash bosch:

After all this deliberating, information gathering and careful consideration, I expect I will end up buying a Jaguar XJ6, Austin Princess or else something equally unsuitable.

I made the mistake of taking someone else's advice and running the BX on too strong a concentration of veg (90%) which gave me some starting problems. There seems to be no discernible cold weather difference between 70% veg and any lower percentage of veg, so I'd say that's the magic quantity. Fuel consumption is slightly higher when mixing veg and petrol as opposed to veg and diesel, I've noticed.

Lovely selection 8)

Neither of those Pugs will have a Bosch pump though, they were never fitted on the S1 anyway and I've only ever seen them on 'R' registered cars onwards. I found a 1998 106 'Independence' (definitely dependant)106 in a breakers yard today, with, believe it or not, an unmolested engine with an original, non-ecu Bosch pump. It, along with the injectors, bracket, fuel lines etc now reside in my garage :D

Pal at work has one of those Rovers you've found, same colour too. It loves the bio, runs as well (if not better) than it did on diesel. We worked out that he's getting the equivalent of 85mpg, factoring in the price we pay for the fuel.

Maybe this should be in the stupid questions section ... when you are running on veg (neat or diluted) does the car stink of burning fat?
