Ah, that was still for sale when I posted it. They do look very comfy.

I don't doubt it Dave; but I didn't pick it up until 12 hours later and as we know, anything can happen. It isn't a problem, there's bound to be another one. Good spot anyway, it's nice to know people have got their eyes peeled on my behalf. Thank you.

In that case, I definitely need someone who's local to it, to go and have a look, shoot some detailed photos, have a drive, and report back to me by email. I can afford it now and from the photos in the ad, I like it; but it's a heck of a daytrip from here. I'd only want to do it once.

No volunteers? Surely we must have someone among us who lives near enough to it?

Posted

I wouldn't have the nerve to ask anyone to do that, someone must be closer, surely to goodness?

I'm the same Eddie. I'm right on the west coast so it's miles away from me otherwise I'd check it out for you.

I might be able to help you: no definite promises, mostly 'cos I haven't got a flippin' clue what my short-term commitments are; but Stirling/Alloa is only a half hour from here (S.W. Fife). I.E., a sight closer than Tayne or Cort. If you want to arrange some vague viewing time with the vendor, PM me, and I'll see what I can do.

My mate at work has just bought himself a 3.3 Grand Voyager.

He's going across to Paris in it in May. He only bought it because it was cheaper than hiring a 7 seater for a week.

When he comes back, he may sell it. If you're not fixed up by then, would you like me to give you a shout?

Well... from going to bed last night, thinking: this could be a bummer, I might have to commit to a big daytrip just to view, or let the Scottish one pass and wait for something nearer, blah blah... suddenly it's all swung around! :D

CJ: Yes please! His phone number's on the Gumtree ad, best by far that you make arrangements with him as you know better than I do what time you can spare. Good batteries in your camera please, as I'll need sharp photos of pretty much everything, plus driving impressions. I'll pm you my email address. If after speaking to him you decide he's too far away, feel free to back off, but I'd appreciate a nod.

Dave: brilliant, yes please! If it survives a run to Paris it should be able to cope with whatever I need it to do. Same comments apply really, I'm going to want loads of photos, especially of anything that might need attention, plus a note of whatever MoT and tax will be left on it. Oh and price! Did he buy this one on the strength of having a workmate who bought two in succession?

Thank you both, I'm delighted.

He actually had one before I bought mine. He had a W reg, had it for years, and as soon as he sold it, he regretted it. He bought himself a Land Rover.

I know Landy's are a bit of a cult thing with some people, and he's one of them, but to me, it's a pile 'o shite.

When he saw my soon-to-be-deceased Grand Voyager, he had a hankering for another one. The trip to Paris trip gave him the excuse.

He's having a bit of a battle with his wife at the mo though. If she wins, he'll be selling it when he gets back.

Well it now seems Tony Blair had a Voyager..... how to put someone right off! :( Anyone know of any good Picassos going? 2.0 petrol, automatic, decent colour......?

Toyota RAV4s don't have any sill issues, they are flat. You get 2.0 vvti pez engines, and automatics too. They do hold their value, my mum got 2.5k for a 2001 51 plate with 100k on the clock, it needed quite a bit of cosmetic work as well before forecourt ready. They don't really go wrong unless abused, but most parts are Toyota only - a new fuel tank cost around £300. Mum treated its underside with a bit respect after that, I did tell her it wouldn't go over things like a LR Series 3 would

:D Thanks for that Anthony! The Rav4 has appeared on my radar, but tends to drop off again... I had a rental one in Cyprus and liked it, so if I can find one that meets the spec and price, and preferably is local (ish) then I could well be up for it. I'd forgotten it was flat-floored.

I've just been looking for Ravs on the web, but there isn't much within range either geographically or financially. However... I have spotted a Picasso that fits the bill, on the Wirral. Could I have a Cheshire-based volunteer to give it a preliminary scan for me please? Shout up on here and I'll PM you the phone number.

Rav's do hold their value. My one in Swiz ended up getting scrapped after the engine decided to eat it's internals after the oil pump failed. From what I read they are a weak point on the petrols. Mind you, mine had suffered some serious abuse.

Posted

I did spot that, but discounted it for a number of reasons, not least it's undriveable and grey. It's also a fair daytrip away. Closer than any Voyager I've spotted so far though!

I've extended the list of candidates. Picasso, Trajet, Rav, Grand Vitara, Honda Shuttle/Stream... open to other suggestions too. Kia Sedona? Possibly, but they all seem to be diesel, which is a big no-no. Whatever I get is for me to drive, on my own time, some of that for pleasure. Therefore it has to be a petrol-engined automatic. I get paid to drive diesel and manual, buggered if I'm paying for it too.

Decent shiters discount on this. Loads of t&t. :D

That could actually be interesting. Does it fit the spec? Can you show me a photo of it with the doors open so i can judge the sill height? Or better, can you bring it Sunday?

It'd fit you to a tee other than the fact that it's manual. I'd of taken a part ex as well...

it's manual.

Now he tells me! :( I was getting all excited there too. Oh well, the quest resumes....

Forester was mentioned, several pages ago, but I didn't give it much attention. I've looked at the pics for this one though. It's certainly close enough, and a price I'd be prepared to pay, but... there seems to be a significant sill between the floor and the door bottom. That is one of the problems we're up against. Mrs R needs clear level access. Shame that, I reckon I could have lived with it very happily.

Lots of cars are too low, obviously. Many are too high, such as Range Rover, Disco, Shogun. Then there's the sill issue. And those are just the Mrs R requirements! After these, we come up on mine! Large petrol engine, auto box, good colour. Oh yeah, and the legalities, like MoT and tax. Dunnarf narrow the field!
