I will one day own a Supercharged Range Rover. Must do that.

Yes, L322s killed front diffs and the airbags occasionally go. They're complicated things that cost £70k new, they're never gonna be run on any kind of budget.

The L322 is a classy motor I recon. It's got the best interior this side of an RR phantom and I thought the 530d motor might the possibility of some kind of economy and reliability. I know what your saying about parts but I guess any old premium motor like an A8 or 7 series would be the same?

My boss has a 5 year old super charged one and is looking to get rid of it after it started popping out of gear. After some sweaty palm moments it turned out just to be a seized linkage but it made him think about the possibility of mega dollars repairs so it's going. The motor is surprisingly tightly packed in there for the size of the car.

That satin black and blue one they started with on wheeler dealers is the pikiest one I've ever seen.

I had a P38 offered to me very cheap. It belongs to one of our fitters at work.

It's an M reg 4.6 HSE.

Not only has it got sagging front suspension, but the tc & abs lights are on.

Not too much, thought I.

I was going to buy it, now I'm not.

Thanks for the heads up chaps.

Don't some P38's suffer from porous block as well?

I've been tempted by several P38's, but I'm a bit scared of them.

P38's are just scrap unless you are very lucky. L322's are at least a proper car, not some wobbly Solihull lash up. I would avoid any diesel, especially an old BMW 3.0 one. Petrols are the 4.4 M62TU with Vanos, water cooled alternator and other delights. Crippling potential repair costs, but at least it's a nice thing to drive.

I thought you'd ruled out 'tall' vehicles, Eddy?

If not, you're probably better off with a Disco 300 TDi than a P38. Just make sure you check for the usual rot, etc. before buying...!

Yep, fair point.

Discos also come in Heather Mills-spec. V8 flavour though, and are often cheaper than the diesels.

I thought he had ruled out vehicles that aren't tall.

Every time I see a Range Rover or X5 I immediately think "New Labour".

A lot of them bought by a certain type of person who does not have the money or Skills necessary to keep them running well.

I seem to see P38's parked up all over the place with saggy suspension and flat tyres.

Tells you all you need to know.

 Bloody hell, that's an idea guaranteed to put me off Range Rovers for life!

OK, today we went and had a look, and a test drive. Mrs R struggled to get in, but agreed once there that she was in a nice place. So we drove about a bit, and stopped in a side street beside a Jeep Cherokee, which is something you may remember from an earlier thread. I was looking down into the Jeep... waaaaaaaaaaaaaay down! We decided it was too tall. Tall vehicles? Tall is what we want, but it now seems there's an upper limit. So, medium-tall then. The Cherokee was a surprisingly accessible height, which the RR isn't. A Disco (which would ONLY be acceptable in V8 auto flava) would suffer the same failing.

Back to plan A then, where a Voyager is top of the list. One thing the RR shares with the Voyager, which is actually quite an important feature: level access. Open the door and you can slide straight in without hoisting your feet over a sill, in or out. I looked at a Zafira, idly, not being able to remember if they had a deep sill; they do. That sill is one of the issues, and where the RR and Voyager score. Voyager scores over the RR by not having to accommodate all the 4x4 running gear, so the floor is nearer to the road.

Meanwhile... on the way home in the 406 I stopped for petrol, and at the next pump was a Honda Shuttle. Aha, thinks I, big roomy MPV without being too high. With the owner's blessing I checked out the sill: wide but very low, verging on slight. So here's another contender, from left field! Honda Shuttle, aka Stream, billed as a 2.2/2.3/2.4 and quite possibly true for all three sizes. Column auto, which I like; 7 seats, which mostly won't be needed. Plenty of room for a wheelchair. I'd like a bit more engine, but I haven't driven a Shuttle yet, it could be a heck of a powerful 2.2 for all I know.

The quest continues...

A relative has a Honda Shuttle. It's been epically reliable. Just keeps going. They're almost completely forgotten and therefore well worth a look. Super-bland styling.
