Classic Insurance - unlimited mileage?

I'm giving skattrd's Saab Turbo the evil eye and my man maths thought even though it uses lots more fuel I could save money by having classic insurance.

Until the insurance company got back to me today saying they didn't do an unlimited mileage policy any more. I'm sure the last time I had a classic car policy it was unlimited mileage, about £120 and you didn't build up any no claims discount. Does that kind of thing exist now?

I looked high and low for an unlimited mileage policy for my Mk3 GTI, best I got was 4500 miles per year!

Anyone want to buy an instrument cluster for a Golf? I've got loads.

I've got unlimited mileage, but it is spread across a number of vehicles. Club membership seems essential to access that level.

There's been a bit of a fuss recently about classic insurers tightening up their requirements (particularly about insuring people under a certain age) so it wouldn't surprise me at all if unlimited mileage has become harder to find.

Presumably the classic insurers have been swamped by people trying to insure their dailies for cheap since insurance costs rocketed.

I'm with Peter James, unlimited mileage is available there.

Footman James do unlimited mileage, if you have 3 or more cars on the policy, not sure about 1 car though.

Isn't that a great thing? Perfect for convincing the other 'alf that yes, you do need many, many vehicles. It's cheaper* dear!

* Fact may not actually prove it's cheaper.

I want a rev counter with just low numbers for my t2, would one from a diesel separate from the cluster and do the job?

It could go in a pod on top of the dash...

Thanks in anticipation,

Without cluttering up an insurance thread, not a hope. Firstly, it was from a Mk3 GTI so it's a pez model and goes up to 8k. Secondly, when you break them open it's all plastic film with printed circuits on, and there's just two multiplugs to run every function on there so you can't seperate the rev counter. I managed to find a 0-6000rpm counter for my Beetle at a autojumble for a tenner, that's your best bet. I'm sure for more info, a new thread could be created ;)

I have the BX on a Classic policy. It is with Adrian Flux and around the low £100 mark. I was given the choice of several mileages, but I went for £6K as the BX can generally cover that in a good year (this one not so as yet!!!) it also has agreed value.

With all things insurance related, you need to ship around and see what fits your circumstances & pocket.

Some classic policies do not include commuting & must be tucked up bduring the hours of darkness if at your home address.

My policy states it must be garaged & have access to another car.

My policy for the Maxi and 14 is with Peter James and that is unlimited mileage, not that it matters as the insurance started in November and I actually haven't driven either vehicle yet!! :D

I've got a Footman James classic multicar policy - you need a minimum of three vehicles, one of which can be a modern.

Unlimited mileage on all vehicles though.

As Dollywobbler, I'm with Peter James. The first year I insured the G-reg Sterling, I was only entitled to limited mileage and no commuting. On my renewal I got unlimited mileage and communting added too. Sadly, obviously no more mileage will be done in the Sterling until its repaired :(

Ditto for me, have been with them for longer than I can remember. Breakdown included and all fully comp.

Beware though as only having a classic policy means you don't technically build up a traditional NCB or so I understand. When I first insured a modern with another company years ago, I had to get a letter from FJ to prove I hadn't had a claim. It's irrelevant now as I'll always have this type of insurance.

Thanks, chaps. On the Peter James website it says "occasional commuting" on the quick quote, although it allows unlimited mileage. I wonder if their definition of occasional is the same as mine? I mean, I wouldn't be doing it on weekends for example, so not continuous.

Posted

Ah yes thinking about it mine was for occassional commuting as I generally take the train to work and only drive occassionally!

Spot on...I was about to add beware your NCB - insurers don't seem to like you driving on a classic policy for more than two years. This policy is supposed to be NCB free for your 2nd classic car.

NCD can be preserved ad infinitum by buying 'regular' insurance policies (which can be running alongside the classic one) every other year and cancelling within the cooling-off period. It'll cost you £50 or so, but it's worth it for the peace of mind in case you need to return to a modern.

Usually that's just for theft. If it's not some real high-value collectors item, just tell them it's garaged and don't make a claim if it gets nicked.

To be fair, a lot of these aren't classic cars in the traditional sense of the word. I haven't been able to get unlimited mileage on my Anglia (Pop or T) for a very long time. You can just put 7000 miles on and top it up though. Just quoting from another thread, but my policy with Hagerty is supposed to be a leisure-only classic policy and the underwriters won't look favourably if I have an incident in inclement weather as it would look like I was using it as my daily. This is the insurer's words from when I spoke to them about it. So when the policy lapses I'll switch providers to someone who legitimately allows daily use.

I am with Peter James and I don't have a garage and they know that!

Ditto, two of mine are 'private property' the other two garaged. I insured the Sierra with them recently on my current policy and they were fine with it being not garaged. Their customer serivce is also good which is a big reason why I keep renewing with them, even if I could save 20 quid or so elsewhere.

My only slight concern with Peter James that if we all keep recommending them, they'll get loads and loads of customers and service will suffer. Up to about the middle of last year, I always had Tina answer the phone. Since then, OTHER PEOPLE have answered! Today, it rang about eight times before being answered. Disgraceful! But I know from experience that they're also very pleasant when it comes to dealing with a claim - that level of service definitely does matter.

The Cortina is insured with Footman James, unlimited mileage, social domestic and pleasure use.

Fat lot of good unlimited mileage is when apart from collecting it I've driven it once since the middle of December and as I type this the cylinder head is on the bench in the garage...
