Any advice on 54 reg mondeo 2.0 tdci?

As some of you may have seen on a previous thread, i've been looking for a mileage muncher.

If you havn't heres the script; i've changed jobs, so a 10 mile daily commute on quiet A and B roads has turned to nearly 30 miles on the M6 and M65. My current daily is a mk5 cortina 2.0 with a four speed 'box, which so far isn't doing too bad except the rear voids are fucked already (third set in 15 months) and the rack has developed a little play, otherwise she's coping reasonably well. The dogshit full consumption is somewhat negated by £20 cash a week fuel allowance, and occasional free petrol (8 gallons last week, woo-hoo!).

Any how there's a '54 plate mondeo ghia 5dr at work i can have for peanuts (£400-£500) but heres the rub, i'm a panel beater by trade and the car is going to be a write off ( not gone through system yet, but will probaly be a cat D) it's also got 174,000 on the clock  , but it's got history (company car, then bought by company user) it's quite tidy, the damage is minor (lock carrier cracked, crossmember banjo'ed but bonnet, lamps and rads are okay) she starts well doesn't smoke, and in the short run around the yard i took i couldn't find any DMF problems. So........

Keep using the Cortina, it's what they were built for in the first place.

Get another Cortina and share the mileage between the two. Still far less to go wrong.

Beat you to it, already have two. Unfortunately the other is a 1600 with a vv carb and four speed box, so can't go more than 10 miles with out strippng the earth of all natural resources.

If the Mondeo is mechanically good then go for it, it's going to be much better on the motorway than a Cortina, plus you don't have to worry about it rusting away or being destroyed.

DMF is the biggest enemy.. If these even the slightest kickback when you rest your foot on the clutch run away. Injectors also break and cost £££ to fix as they have to be re coded at Ford... Having said that at the 4-500 pound mark its a steal. Mine was a comfortable, very nice to drive and fast car with 50 plus mpg... Until the DMF went anyway.

Replace it with a 2.3 Sierra diesel. It'll be really shit, but people here will admire you.

Watch out for previous turbo and/or actuator failure on the TDCIs - they never seem the same once fixed. Also failure seems irrespective of whether or not the engine has been cared for or thrashed.

Buy the Mondeo. Its cheap at that price and is effectively disposable if something big does go wrong in six months.

BTW, if you are commuting on the M6 and M65 you must be around this neck of the woods somewhere?

You said it yourself. D-M-F.

The salt will kill the Cortina.

Buy the Mondeo and throw it away WHEN it breaks.

EFA.

Seriously, though, I'd have that Mondeo, then if it does self destruct, you'll get most if not all of your money back by splitting a few bits, then sending it over the bridge.

At that money, it's cheaper than all the welding you'll need to do when salt-fuelled tinworm gets hold of the TIna.

Disposable Mondeo FTW.

When it breaks, lob it on ebay for £200. The MPG difference alone should see you in profit before too long.

I can't see what's to think about!, you can't really go wrong with the Mondeo, 54 plate will mean it will have such luxuries as cruise control and climate control as well as the all important heated front screen for those cold mornings.

Is it a 115 bhp 5 speed or the nippy 130 6 speed? as for the DMF, i wouldn't worry about it, most cars have them now, as long is it idles smoothly without it "chugging" then it's fine.

If you have have a rattling noise lower down in the engine bay then it which will be your lower crank pulley, the rubber perishes and it wobbles which again is a common problem on the TDCi, I had mine replaced which cost £300 (can be done cheaper) but in 2 years and 20000 miles it's the only real fault i've had with mine.

I'd buy it. If it starts well from cold at this time of year then the injection system should be sound, although all of it is a common fail... Same with the DMF... but again if it seems ok why not? Ghia spec will make it a 130 6 speed i think, the 115 brake was only on lower spec's wasn't it?

At that price its disposable, it would be a different story if they were wanting a grand for it or something because an old worn out Mondeo TDCI is about as reliable as a third world dictatorship. If you got 6 months out of it you would still be quids in by selling whatever still works and weighing the rest in.
