Shite(ish) estate - suggestions

I've thinking about getting an estate for a while. I did have the ex-Robt, now catsinthewelder, bx for a bit and quite enjoyed that. I'm now thinking it would be handy to have one for occasional tat hauling duties. I'm looking for something a bit older than a bx though, say 60's-70's that hopefully shouldn't need constant fettling.

I was thinking about an Amazon or a Saab 95, but am also thinking about Citroen Ami (for economical/comedy driving/leaning action). However I have never driven any of them and am unsure how I would get on with them.

I know theres no substitute for driving one myself, but can any fellow shiteists give any real world experience of driving such fine* automobiles.

Please feel free to suggest alternatives for me to consider.

I will likely pay no attention to any of this and get a Volvo 850 T5.

+1 for Ami, although they're thin on the ground and rust like buggery. They aren't quick but better on the motorway than you may imagine (should sit at 80 without making your ears bleed like a 2cv...) Otherwise marvellous. A GS or GSA estate may also be a good bet; superb cars although not fantasically economical and also an incredible propensity to dissolve.

If you didn't get on with the BX, I don't think an Ami is for you. They need thrashing even more than a normally aspirated diesel, though they are good fun. For a bit. Both require exactly the same 'don't slow down at all' driving technique.

Saab 95 is a good shout. Volvo 144/244, though I don't like driving those. Very odd driving position. A beige Cortina estate would lead to some hero worship on here.

DW - I did get on with the bx, hence me thinking about older Citroens ;)

There was an Ami8 on the blue forum recently that looked ok ... I assume most will be left hookers though.

I'd vote for the Amazon, one of those would make a very practical and cool looking daily although they aren't cheap and rust for Britian, just ask Wat, What about a Hillman Hunter Estate (if you can find one?)

I'm sure they carried on making those Hunters in Iran, if only we knew an expert...

I realise I'm a recent convert to the stable, but I'm fully loving this 940. 2.3LPT + £40 for a boost gauge and bleed valve and it's easily the most competent and quick car I've owned.

And its chuffing massive inside, and well spec'd (even mingebag spec like mine), and parts are cheap. WIN-WIN-WIN.

Ah, sorry. I'd got it into my head that the BX hadn't tickled your pleasure receptors. Apologies!

You definitely need to sample an A-series Citroen. Amis are a fair bit rot prone though. Well, they all are but 2CVs and Dyanes are usually easier to get repaired. Dyane has a hatchback and a folding rear seat, so pretty handy for lugging.

Saw that on RR, where I lurk. You should introduce it to us one day :)

I was going to, but I didn't want to sully the board with yet another ReadersRides thread that has little by the way of updates. I might chuck some garb in the the News24 thread.

Please do; the glowing exhaust manifold photo was most intriguing :)

Cheers for the suggestions guys, keep em coming.

Volvo 240 - too bland

Citroen DS safari - too expensive

Felicia/Volvo 7/9xx - too new

How about an Opel Rekord Skattman?

You still got the GTA BTW?

Yes I do, it's still needing attention, but it did have an MOT until recently .... is that MVS?

I'd love a CX, but I have a feeling it would need constant attention, plus it's bigger than the moon.

What Junkman sez! Pure shite-tastic, and enough room in the back for a football match, as well as the ideal shaggin wagon

That's making me feel all funny. Was the Custom Cruiser Olds' version of the Buick Roadmaster, or is the 'Cruiser smaller?

No Volvo is shite - although they are Autoshite (I've been informed there is a difference) :-P Therefore, on that front, any Volvo would do...

My suggestion:

What was all that two rear wipers thing about? I must say these do look cavernous, and utterly sheet!

Or what about an Omega? These should be cheap enough and useful at the same time...

It's the exact same shite minus wood veneer and with a different fascia. Mind you, this helps it bugger all to blend better into traffic.

That's my old one. Bought from Spottedlaurel of this parish, used as a daily for nearly a year, then sold back to him to use as spares for his collection. It was a great old car, surprisingly nippy for a huge car with a 2.2 engine, easy to work on, not bad on fuel, comfy, and drove like new despite having 200K on the clock. Cavernous boot, as you'd expect. Didn't handle badly either.

They are getting few and far between now though.
